Combat Phase
Spring 1951
Turn 1

Foreword: This is the first battle report.  Please keep in mind that both sides start with limited tech, and advancements into new developments can be difficult.  Additionally, your nation is not particularly well-developed, so fielding equipment can be costly.  New weapons are expensive, and until your Economic Development Track has moved up a few levels you might find yourself struggling to put them on the field.  This is intentional; your nation still needs time to develop and grow.  Perhaps you can find yourself an ally to help soothe these growing pains?

Technological Developments

This turn Nogrania has attempted to mimic the developments of first-world countries and build their very first walker, the NAF-SPAT-51 "Paradigm".  Essentially an artillery piece mounted on a flat platform, the Paradigm uses four stumpy mechanical legs for locomotion.  Each leg uses a number of hydraulic pistons attached to a hardened mount and terminates in a flat, wide foot.  It's not particularly fast - an infantryman could keep up with it on foot.  The legs "push" away from the craft one at a time in what can only be described as a crawling movement, causing it to move in a vague zig-zag pattern.  It can't fire while moving, and the crew and engine are out in the open.  The gearing that controls the legs is mounted on the underside of the craft, giving it a very low ground clearance.  The walking function isn't particularly sophisticated and has a small envelop of freedom, and the legs are entirely unarmored.

For their revision, Nogrania has borrowed a Enfield conversion developed by Britain during WW2.  The NAF-SAR-51 "Kotow" is a shameless copy of the M1915 Howell Automatic Rifle, which was a conversion of a standard No1 MkIII Lee Enfield rifle into a semiautomatic.  This involves a gas piston that envelops the muzzle, travels down the length of the rifle, and terminates in a slide that automatically cycles the bolt with each shot.  A number of other changes are made, most notably bumping the magazine size from 5 shots to 20.  Though the rifle can no longer mount a bayonet, it is now equipped with a bi-pod to ease operation in the prone position.  The trigger has been modified to require the user to physically reset it between each shot, preventing unintentional automatic fire.  Jams occasionally.

Toskesh has likewise attempted to circumvent the Geneva Conventions this turn by developing an entirely unheard of vehicle known as the "hovercraft".  They've named this vehicle the Xi-51 Qi-Chu.  Like Nogrania's Paradigm, it is also a mobile artillery piece, but the means of locomotion are entirely different.  A giant rubber inner-tube surrounds the outside of the craft and air is pumped into the interspace between the deck and the ground.  This high-pressure area lifts the craft off the ground and causes it to hover, allowing it to be moved (relatively) easily by a pair of fans mounted on the rear.  In order to generate the power required to keep the tube inflated, lift the craft, and power the fans, Toskesh engineers have cobbled together a crude turboshaft engine - the first such engine to ever exist on the island of Serouda.  It takes three - three - of them to power the Xi-51, but Toskesh has produced the worlds first functional (if prohibitively expensive) hovercraft.  Although remarkably fast, the craft suffers from a number of issues preventing it from reaching its full potential.  The engines won't run in wet weather, the large air intakes prevent the cannon from firing rewards, the stabilizing legs do a poor job of keeping the craft steady when firing, the engines must be running constantly even when stationary, and the rubber skirt is vulnerable to enemy fire.  High obstacles and waves can cause the skirt to collapse require the craft to be stop and reinflate itself, making water travel risky and limiting it to areas with flat, level terrain.  A Sunrise artillery cannon makes up the main armament, but can be removed to allow up to eight soldiers hitch a ride.

For their revision Toskesh focused on upgrading their turboshaft engines, producing the Type 51 Turboshaft.  This brings the power output up to a level comparable with turboshafts produced almost half a decade ago and drops the engine requirements for the Xi-51 Qi-Chu from three to two, lowering the expense just enough for it to be Very Expensive rather than a National Effort.

Combat Report
War returns to Serouda!

Nogrania has elected to push the Badlands and Mountains.
Toskesh has elected to push the Badlands and Fjords.

Combat in the Mountains
With their new walker in full production, Nogrania immediately deploys it to the front lines and pushes into the mountains.  Compared to horse-drawn artillery, the Paradigm is a dream to move along the steep, winding roads that cut through the mountains.  Conversely, Toskesh's Xi-51 Qi-Chu doesn't make an appearance, as the rough terrain, steep inclines, and wet weather makes it entirely unsuited to the theatre.  The mountains still promote defensive tactics, but Nogrania is able to move their artillery into range, fire a barrage, and often leave before return fire can disable the un-armored walker.  That being said, ambushes are brutal to the unarmored vehicles, as the crew and delicate components are completely exposed and a single grenade is able to knock them out of commission.  Luckily for Nogrania, their infantrymen are able to somewhat protect the delicate walkers with their new NAF-SAR-51 "Kotow" rifles, especially since it's not particularly hard for them to keep up with them.  The walkers are too few in number to carry an assault by themselves, but they make it possible to soften up enemy positions and allow infantry to move in and do the heavy lifting.  And with Nogrania's new Kotow rifles, they can certainly do that much.  Being the only side with a semi-automatic rifle is a huge advantage, especially in closer combat when volume of fire matters more.  At longer distances it doesn't matter so much, but soldiers note that the bipod makes lining up shots easier from cover.

With their artillery walkers softening enemy positions and their semi-auto rifles finishing up, Nogrania's developments this year are a one-two punch in the Mountains.

Nogrania moves the frontline north and takes a section of the Mountains.

Combat in the Badlands
Both sides are pushing here, and the battle is much more evenly matched in the dry, relatively flat Badlands.  It's here that Toskesh's Xi-51 Qi-Chu hovercraft can make use of its high speed and quickly move in for retaliatory and harassing barrages.  Flat terrain allows them to maneuver and reach high speeds, and dry weather means the engines don't flame out - though operators must be very careful to avoid driving in each others dust clouds.  The hovercrafts rarely stay in position for more than a single firing event; even with the stabilizing limbs the entire craft will shift after a single shot, requiring the gunner to take the time to recalculate trajectory.  Additionally, the fragile nature of the craft means being caught by small arms fire is a death sentence for the crew.  The large rubber skirt doesn't withstand small arms fire even the slightest, and the Qi-Chu can be easily rendered immobile.

The Paradigm struggles just as much as the Qi-Chu, if not more.  Being so slow means it can't perform the same hit-and-run tactics or escape returning fire.  The only time it shines is when moving up with a large infantry assault, as it's able to keep pace with nearby soldiers and provide supporting fire.  In this aspect it shines slightly better than the Qi-Chu, whose high rate of fuel consumption means a limited loitering time.  Still, when considering the two craft are equally fragile, the Qi-Chu has an advantage due to its high speed.  This makes it more useful in this theatre than the Paradigm, and Toskesh is able to more easily capitalize on their mobile artillery.  This would put them in the lead, were it not for Nogrania's Kotow semi-automatic rifle.  The higher rate of fire and larger magazine capacity means a single Nogrania infantryman can send more lead downrange than a Toskesh soldier, giving them a definite edge.

Ultimately combat is fairly balanced between the two sides - Toskesh is better able to harass and soften up targets, but Nogrania's infantry assaults are generally more successful.  It seemed like neither side would be able to gain ground this year, but...

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Due to the actions of one man, the scales have tipped in Nogrania's favor and allowed them to make progress in the Badlands.

Nogrania moves the frontline north and takes a section of the Badlands.  Nogrania has gained a War Hero: Ellis Green!

The Combat in the Fjords
The ragged, broken fingers of land that make up the Fjords are perfect for Toskesh's hovercraft.  It's not uncommon for commanders to have the artillery mounting removed as soon as they receive a new Xi-Chu, as the ability to quickly cross stretches of water and deploy squads of infantry behind enemy lines is immeasurable.  A platoon of hovercraft can hop a gap of water and drop thirty-two infantry at once, allowing Toskesh to push the frontline from multiple directions at once.  These missions must be done quickly, however; in the spring light rain showers can catch hovercraft crews by surprise and cause their turboshaft engines to flame out.  More than once has a hovercraft gotten trapped behind enemy lines by a sudden shower, and on one unfortunate occasion been caught over the water.  Still, the benefits outweigh the risks, and Toskesh uses their hovercraft to great effect.

The Xi-Chu isn't quite as useful on land as a mobile artillery piece, however.  Rain-fed foliage and hilly terrain makes it difficult to progress, and hovercraft crews are forced to go around hills rather than climb them.  Foliage can hide rocks and other debris, causing the skirt to catastrophically deflate.  While not a problem once or twice, it happens enough to limit the usefulness of the Xi-Chu and frustrate the crews.  The Paradigm is likewise stymied by foliage which gets caught on its undercarriage and limbs, but hills are not as much of a problem.  Paradigm walkers gloriously crest hills and survey the surrounding countryside, only to get caught in thornbushs on their way back down.  More useful than either sides mobile artillery here is Nogrania's Kotow semi-automatic rifle, which makes clearing soft cover easier.  Engagements occur at medium-long range here so it's not as useful as it could be, but often cover amounts to a picket fence or waist-deep grass.

It's close, and Nogrania certainly does make some solid advancements over land, but Toskesh's ability to frequently land troops behind their lines ultimately pushes the battle in their favor.

Toskesh moves the frontline south and takes a section of the Fjords.

Economic Developments:
Both Toskesh and Nogrania are rapidly moving into the modern era.  This means representation at the U.N., trade agreements with foreign countries, and a stronger national identity beyond just being a former colony.  To this end your nation will require a flag to represent them both on the battlefield and at the United Nations.  We are quite confident that having a flag will show foreign investors that we are a real, stable country worthwhile for economic investment, so developing a flag will give our nation +1 point on our Economic Development Track.  This flag needs to be 800x480 pixels and feature our nations color, but other than that the details are up to you.

Other News:
The Korean War grows increasingly heated as U.N. troops manage to recapture Seoul for the fourth - and final - time.  This is held aloft as evidence of the United Nations competency, despite troop involvement being 88% from the United States.  U.S. troop involvement hits 2.9 million during this period; pictures surface of an M41 Walker Bulldog in moving along a road in North Korea on six mechanical legs.  The U.S. government has declined to comment.  A suspicious amount of Russian military equipment is used by the North Korean army, as well as suspiciously-skilled Mil Mi-4 helicopter operators.  The Soviet Union has declined to comment.  The Ganghwa Massacre also happens during this period, wherein hundreds of communist sympathizers are slaughtered in South Korea.  The 22nd Amendment is passed, limiting U.S. presidents to two terms.  "King & I" opens at the Saint James theatre for 1,246 performances.

Design: NAF-AFW-51 "Hippo" Hexapod  (it's a tank walker)
The Armored Fighting Walker Hippo is practically what we've learned from the Paradigm applied to an improved version of the Thatcher.

It utilizes 6 legs and all-encompassing light armor. It's a bit bigger than the Thatcher, allowing for a more comfortable crewing experience (because we all know that's the ultimate goal in military engineering) and more ammo storage. Two mounts designed for weapons similar to the Wickers (though empty for now) are put into place - a coaxial mount in the armor next to the main cannon, and a pintle cupola on top of the main turret. A basic hydraulic system allows for powered control of the turret.
The legs are largely the focus of the AFW, and are aimed to be very much more refined over the prototype Paradigm. They're given thin armor and in addition to just generally being improved to operate faster, are given additional mechanical complexity to the point where the AFW-52 should be able to actually properly move in directions in fashions more similar to >2-legged animals compared to the more awkward "baby crawling" thing it does now.

You should really look to the wilderness for your stealth ideas, it has been doing it much longer than you have after all. Take squids for example, that ink trick works pretty well, and in water too! So you just sneak into the dam upsteam, dump several megatons of distressed squid into it, then break the dam. Boom, you suddenly have enough water-proof stealth for a whole city!
