Combat Report

Nogrania has elected to push the Fjords and Eastern Seas.
Toskesh has elected to push the Fjords and Eastern Seas.

Combat in the Mountains

Nogrania's control of the Mountains goes uncontested this year, meaning they have generated +1 on their EDT this turn.

Nogrania maintained their hold on the Mountains Theatre! They generate +1 point on their Economic Development Track.

Combat in the Badlands

After the harrowing combat from the Spring, Ellis Green happily enjoys the calm in the Badlands this turn.  No push is made here, so Nogrania continues to hold the Badlands.

Nogrania has maintained their hold on the Badlands.  They have gained +1 point on their Economic Development Track!
Nogrania has gained enough points on their EDT to begin importing an additional Oil Resource!

Combat in the Fjords

It's summer in the Fjords again, and the vegetation has dried up.  This is good news for both sides, though mostly for Nogrania.  The flatter ground means Toskesh's Qi-Chu's can move about between the hills unimpeded (especially since their skirts are now robust enough to keep from deflating) and perform "shoot and scoot" artillery barrages.  Nogrania's Paradigm artillery walkers with their new 4" guns can likewise move about freely, although much more slowly and with greater freedom.  Most notably, Nogrania's Hippo is now a National Effort due to the temporary reparations withholding, meaning they can afford to field only a single one in the Fjords this year.  Toskesh manages to knock it out of commission early on with a combination of Jin Na SMRL ambushes and a follow-up 'Huā zi' rocket barrages.  Curiously, the 'Huā zi' can't be used as frequently in the Fjords this year as an artillery piece, as the back-blast frequently and repeatedly sets the dry foliage on fire.  There's one case of a grass fire spreading wildly enough to reach a rocket dump, annihilating a Toskesh position.  From then on crews take care to douse the nearby ground with water before firing.

The Qi-Chu is able to avoid this problem thanks to the metal exhaust plating the 'Huā zi' mounting comes with, and their barrages are relatively unimpeded.  Toskesh infantry make good use of their small-arms advantage over Nogrania's soldiers, who are now forced to fall back on their Kotow rifles.  The older weapon isn't necessarily bad, but it's certainly less reliable and heavier than the Rabid or the Xi-52.  On Nogrania's side of the front line, their Herald-class destroyers make good use of their new 4" guns to hit further inland and provide off-shore support.  Nogrania certainly needs it now that their armor support is gone.  Without the Hippo (and the NMG mounts that come with it), Nogrania is severely out-gunned by Toskesh.  It comes as a surprise to no one that Toskesh has managed to push south and force Nogrania out of the Fjords, even with Nogrania's new and improved Duke mounted on the Paradigm and Herald.

Toskesh has pushed the frontline south and gained control of the Fjords Theatre! They will generate +1 point on their Economic Development Track for each turn they continue to hold it.

Combat in the Eastern Seas

The Eastern Sea is an interesting battle.  Nogrania's Herald-class Destroyer is now Very Expensive, and Toskesh has them out numbered since their Dogbite-class Destroyer is merely Expensive.  However, Nogrania has Toskesh out-gunned with artillery mountings twice the size of the Dogbite's meager 50 mm Sunrise cannons.  This means they have greater range, and they hit twice as hard when they do hit.  That being said, a Herald can only shoot so fast, and the Dogbite is no push-over.  The combat seems doomed to be stalemated, but…

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Due to the actions of one man, the scales have tipped in Toskesh's favor and allowed them to make progress in the Eastern Seas.

Toskesh has pushed the frontline south and gained another section of the Eastern Sea Theatre! They may now apply their naval advantage to the entire Fjords Theatre - one more section and they may cut off Nogrania's Naval TC!  Toskesh has gained a War Hero: Commander Zhao De!

Olympics:
The 1952 Summer Olympics is held in Helsinki, Finland this year.

Nogrania has entered Dylan Mcfinnigan, an Irishman carefully selected from the finest bars in Nogrania, chosen due to his many victorious bar fights.  With a mean Left Hook (scientifically proven to be the hardest hitting thing in Nogrania), most of his training involved teaching him how to fight fair and square and in accordance with official Olympic rules.  Naturally, he has been entered into the boxing competition.  Due to his large size (being build like a "brick shithouse"), he will be boxing in the Heavyweight circuit.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Representing Toskesh at the Olympics is Ernesto Davidson y García, a Filipino man.  Rescued from a destroyed ship being towed by a half-dead whale, his harpoon-throwing skills were quickly capitalized upon and he was bribed into participating in the Olympics for Toskesh.  In the little time available he is quickly trained in how to "properly" throw a javalin, rather than a harpoon.  Several other minor details are taken care of, such as officially making him a Toskesh citizen and replacing his blood with better blood
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

As it turns out, there is quite a difference between bar-brawling and Olympic boxing.  With Dylan Mcfinnigan entered into the Heavyweight boxing circuit, he's going up against the toughest, strongest, most well-trained boxers the world has to offer.  His first fight was against Tomislav Krizmanić, a Yugoslavic brute.  Surprising everyone, Mcfinnigan lasts far longer than anyone thought.  He managed to land a solid left hook in the first round, briefly putting Tomislav down on one knee, but by the end of the second round he'd been fatigued by the prolonged fight - barfights rarely lasted longer than a few quick punches and a broken barstool.  As soon as his guard sagged, Tomislav Krizmanić landed a quick right that put him down for the count.  If it was any consolation, Tomislav Krizmanić managed to last until his fourth match, meaning Mcfinnigan wasn't up against a push-over.

Ernesto Davidson y García turns out to be an excellent choice for the Men's Javelin Throw.  With years of harpoon throwing under his belt and plenty of fresh blood pumped into his veins, he manages to succeed in the qualifying round (bumping out Vladimir Kuznetsov from the Soviet Union).  During the finals he managed to throw an average of 71.92 meters - a truly impressive amount, and just enough to put him in third place.  Having never participated in the Olympics before, our nation celebrates our first Olympic medal; Bronze, for Men's Javelin Throw.

With the 1952 Summer Olympics finished, Nogrania has conscripted Mcfinnigan into the military and put him to work.  Toskesh has attempted to do the same for Ernesto, only to find the Filipino sailor has disappeared with his crew, sailing away aboard a pirated Zìyóu-52 Merchant Vessel!  The High Council is understandably furious, and a bounty has been put out for the filthy deserter.  Despite his embarrassing disappearance, Ernesto has at least left behind his Olympic Bronze Medal, which means Toskesh has one and Nogrania does not.

Other News:
Hugo Ballivian's government is overthrown by the Bolivian National Revolution, starting a period of agrarian reform, universal suffrage and the nationalisation of tin mines.  Dwight D. Eisenhower resigns as Supreme Commander of NATO.  The concept of the integrated circuit, the basis for all modern computers, is published by Geoffrey Dummer.  Steel mill workers in the US go on strike all over the country amid talks of nationalizing the steel industry.  US airplanes bomb energy centers at Yalu Korea.  Dutch social democratic party wins 2nd-Parliamentary election.  The USSR declares peace treaty with Japan invalid.  Mr. Potato Head is introduced and is the first toy advertised on television.

The Huànguān (Eunuch) Pocket Battleship

The Huànguān is our designated battleship. Powered by a gas turbine similar to the one used in the Ziyoú Merchant Vessel, it is a 2500 ton ship, a quite modest size if compared with our previous model. Much of the weight increase comes from the Heavy armor applied around the munition depots and the engine area in order to protect the sole turbine the powers the ship. Other parts of the ship are protected only by Light armor and rely on a heavily compartmentalized internal design and water pumps in order to take as much time as possible to sink. In the proud tradition of Toskeshian ship building, we have managed to limit the living quarters to a minimum, repurposing the dining room as barracks with the help of an invention Ernesto mentioned to us in a drunken haze:  the Foldable Hanging Beds (a.k.a. hammock).

As a frontliner, it is armed with three closed, medium-armored double turrets with Sunrise field cannons in each side, and a Type-51w 'Huā zi' MRRL in the bow and stern, in a rotating platform. Fixed light armored emplacements for Type-51b Páoxiāo de léi shēng RGL are scattered in the railing of the ship, for close ship-to-ship combat use.

Piāoqiè guānsī (Copyright Infringement) Hexapod Revision

We have made our engineers sit down and carefully catalogue every part of the Hippo with detail so they can be replicated and throughly plagiarized mass produced . With this revision, the Piāoqiè guānsī Hexapod shall be fully adapted to our industry, with new and improved iron bars and short platforms.

"From Toskesh, with Love to [Insert Nogranian Hero here]" is etched in the right side. Although the phrase loses a lot of power from not being customizable to the select scum we would be facing each season, its universal nature should cover most of them.

Yāngē-class Citadel Destroyer

The Yāngē is our first purposefully designed ship after the signing of the Geneva Convention. Classified as a Citadel Destroyer inside Toskesh due to it's layout - light armored hull, metal deck and a heavy citadel holding it's ammo and powerplant. Speaking of power, the ship is  powered by a gas turbine similar to the one used in the Ziyoú Merchant Vessel, building off from experience gained there. The ship's displacement is aimed to be 2,500 metric tons, which is quite modest given pre-Geneva naval vessels. It features a heavily compartmentalized internal design and water pumps in order to take as much time as possible to sink, despite it's light armor. In the proud tradition of Toskeshian ship building, we have managed to limit the living quarters to a minimum, repurposing the dining rooms as barracks with the help of an invention Ernesto mentioned to us in a drunken haze:  the Foldable Hanging Beds (a.k.a. hammock).

Should there be enough time, the MRRL used by the ship is to be improved.

Bronze-medal Engine Design
We put our full efforts into a new and improved engine specifically designed to get our helicopters into the air and moving swiftly regardless of any weight problems. This includes all the various period-appropriate turbo-shaft technology and some flimsy attempt to justify something revolutionary from up to a decade into the future... This is to be implemented into our current helicopter design as the sole priority and our hovercraft if possible as a secondary objective.

If someone actually knows engines or can be bothered to look them up please submit something more coherent and specific... I don't really feel confident submitting this design but our current array of technologies would very much like a light, high-performance engine that doesn't break the bank... Spending a design on pure engine technology seems like something with long-term payoffs as a general edge in terms of powerplants. We also need that helicopter to push on the mountains and with some luck it will have the range to help at sea. On that note, we should probably design an unarmed scout plane with armoured wings for slashing open dirigibles. If we had the engines for it we might be able to design such a thing with a revision considering that aeroplanes are an extant technology with many available examples. And they can hardly complain about the thing having reinforced wings!

Actually, they can:
Quote from: Geneva Conventions
V.    Fixed-Wing Aircraft:
Protocol V on Prohibitions or Restrictions on the Use of Fixed-Wing Aircraft prohibits the use of air-borne vehicles which use stationary wing planes as their primary method of generating lift for offensive military purposes.  Such vehicles may not be fitted with offensive or defensive armaments, including but not limited to: bombs, guns, rockets, or flechettes.  Additionally, the use of fixed-wing aircraft itself as a weapon against enemy targets is prohibited.  The reason is that the imprecise nature of bombing results in unacceptable amounts of collateral damage against civilian objects, and such vehicles do not permit chance for military personnel to surrender during combat. This protocol does not recognize the pilots signal flare as an armament, nor does it prohibit the use of unarmed fixed-wing aircraft for observational purposes.
No Kamikaze'ing into their blimps.

EDIT: Ah right. We probably discuss too much on Discord, RAM, but the idea for this turn is to step up our naval game and strangle their naval TC, they get their UN resources back next turn, but we can keep one of those resources down if we advance again on the sea. We can't rely on our hero to do so, as they have 2 to our 1. Even if diminishing returns somehow makes it so the fight is once again even; I'd rather not risk things to RNGesus to advance once again.

Really, advancing on the Sea gives us these: It strangles their naval TC, it'll give us economic development points like any other region, and it'll let us just end the game if we ever manage to get sufficiently better than them on land forces. While Mountain+Badlands advancement would be nice at disrupting their economic development, they'll need more TC to take advantage of that... And if we're strangling their naval TC...

Qīngtíng (Dragonfly) Radio

The Dragonfly is a radio device formed by two transmitters. The two transmitters emit continuously the aria “Lady Feng Pei agonizes in the backyard of her house with a kitchen knife buried on her belly the killer is cracking bad jokes with her drunk second cousin”. However, instead of doing it in a fixed wavelength, they each rapidly travel along an assigned part of the spectrum, needing as much as a quarter second to get across one side to the other of their assigned area. This should ensure all the enemy communications are obscured by the weeping laments of a dying woman and untranslatable quips.

We intend it to be portable enough for two soldiers (one for the foldable antenna, another for the transmitters) and fielded in high ground in fifteen minutes or, better, put it in a Immortal plane so it can broadcast over enemy positions.

But they have air transport that we are ill-equipped to deal with from the sea. And our current helicopter and hovercraft designs don't really work. A really good engine would give us two designs and a revision could give our ships helipads and probably a small upscale to the destroyer's guns...

How would a really good engine give us 2 designs?... I mean, yeah it'd upgrade our hovercraft a bit again, but where are you getting the 2nd?... Unless you mean the Helicopter? We rolled a 1 at Very Hard, all the blueprints and notes on the thing were in the thing when it went down in flames, we don't have a helicopter to improve; we'll need to throw another design at a helicopter to get one.

And yeah, we aren't well equipped to take down air transports perhaps, but do remember that they need 4 TC for all of their resources, and they only have 4 TC. If we strangle their naval TC they'll stay short. (Also, we can't mess with their air TC it seems)

Should there be enough time, the MRRL used by the ship is to be improved.

Hard Difficulty: 6

The Yāngē-class Citadel Destroyer is our newest ship, sitting at more than twice the size of our previous Dogbite destroyer.  It is lightly armored but heavily armed, featuring a total of twelve Sunrise cannons in twin Medium-armor mountings.  The turrets are arranged with one fore, one aft, and two on each side, meaning at broadside the Yāngē can bring to bear eight cannons at once.  An additional 'Huā zi' MRRL is placed amidship, though it will generally be stowed away and used primarily for off-shore bombardments.  The hull is Thin armor, protecting it against anything weaker than a can opener.  The citadel, which stores the ammo supply and houses the powerplant, is Heavy armor and should be able to stop Ironcaster rounds beyond point-blank range, and even Duke rounds when properly angled.  Supporting this defense is a thorough compartmentalization, to the point of frustrating the crew with the maze-like system of bulkheads.  Standard pumps are included, and space is saved through the clever use of "Foldable Hanging Beds™".  The powerplant is a pair of the super-sized gas turbines used on the Ziyoú, which allow the ship to keep pace with the smaller and lighter Dogbite despite the considerable increase in size and armament.  The ship sits at a tidy 2,500 metric tons.  Upgrading the MRRL is outside the scope of the design and was not attempted.  8 Ore, 4 Oil, 1 Cobalt.

Revision: Tanks for the Commonman

The Piāoqiè guānsī main problem with fielding is the innate complex nature because of hastily created copied plans from the enemy, and trying to learn from those. The design team has spent time to making their own production plans of the Piāoqiè guānsī to the military so that their industry can field these things in larger numbers, and all of them metric conversions are finally done. The tea-making system that they have previous added onto their Hippo-walker is also attempted again it be added onto the vehicle, but now it can only make green tea. The vehicle isn’t really any more effective than theirs even after our attempt of trying to simplify the construction process of it, but it still functions as a normal walker tank.
