Combat Phase
Winter 1953
Turn 12

Nogrania is short on TC this turn, and has stopped their import of an Oil resource.

Technological Developments

Nogrania does their best to catch up with Toskesh's Xīwàng attack helicopter and builds one of their own this turn.  The NAF-AH-53 'Tornado' is a rather long and slender four-blade attack helicopter featuring a pair of stubby wings for stability and a pair of Percheron-B engines mounted over the in-line cockpit.  It's Lightly armored, with a couple of Medium patches around the cockpit and fuel tanks.  The rotors are reinforced to make them resilient against damage some light damage.  The pilot and co-pilot have access to flight controls, though the co-pilot is the only one with access to the forward-mounted Emu.  Due to the more stable mounting, the Emu NMG doesn't have a lot of sway.  The gun can be aimed with a simple electric joystick, though the gunner will rely on tracers to accurately place his fire.  The stubby wings come with set of six hardpoints - left vacant for now - and an empty space in the nose is currently filled by a tea-brewing set-up.  Though it comes with detachable floats, there single NMG on the nose leaves it rather under-armed compared to its Toskesh counter-part.

For their revision Nogrania has reverse-engineered the NAF-RL-53 "Gin na Tonic", replete with a rather amusing naming scheme.  It is an unapologetic rip-off of Toskesh's “Jin Na” SMRL X-52b.  It's a pretty good rocket launcher - shoulder-mounted, with an 3.15 inch warhead and a necked-down body packed with cordite propellant.  Like its counterpart, it is reasonably accurate with a rifled barrel and a nose-fed loading scheme and fold-out fins - thankfully declared legal by the United Nations. It has a magneto sparkler ignition and wood padding, but like Toskesh's SMRL it only use HE ordinance as neither side has taken the time to develop HEAT.  It is complex, for now.

Toskesh has also built a new helicopter this turn; the 'Luànbīng' Assault Helicopter.  It isn't quite able to achieve its goal of being an "assault" helicopter, but it does feature a rather impressive lift capacity due to the twin engines and massive blade span.  The Luànbīng is able to comfortably fit a dozen soldiers in the cabin area (not counting the pilot), or up to fourteen if the soldiers don't bring anything much bulkier than Dài-I Zha-Buqiang rifles.  A winch on the underside allows the helicopter to carry a Qīngsuàn 75 mm cannon, a Yīfānfēngshùn Rocket Artillery piece, or even a Qi-Chu, though passenger capacity is correspondingly reduced.  In order to make weight the Light armor is mostly on the bottom of the helicopter, as well as a few choice patches around the engines and cockpit.  A pair of Tūn's are mounted on the doors with standard crank-handles.  Other than this armament, the Luànbīng does not feature much in the way of offensive weaponry - conceivably a pair of 100 kg bombs can be attached to the winch, but accurate bombing is not really possible.  In terms of speed and cargo capacity, it out performs Nogrania's Draft quite nicely.  An unarmored and unarmed variant can be used for more mundane cargo needs, providing Toskesh with an additional TC.

For their revision Toskesh has revised their Yange citadel destroyer into the Piāofú de niǎo qīxī Helicopter Tender.  The back deck has been chopped flat and most of the hull hastily re-configured to allow for a helicopter servicing bay.  The Piaofu can hold two helicopters at one time - one on the landing pad, and another stowed in the service bay.  Launching both requires the first to lift off, then the second to be moved to the landing pad before being unpacked and readied for take-off.  Most of the AA stations are kept, but due to weight, balance, and space concerns, only the front twin 50 mm turret is kept.

Combat Report

Nogrania has elected to push the Badlands and Fjords.
Toskesh has elected to push the Fjords and Eastern Seas.

Combat in the Mountains

The frontline boarding the frozen swamps and mountain range has once again fallen silent.  This is a welcome lull for troops on both sides, as it means less marching through driving blizzards.

Nogrania maintains their hold on the Mountains and generates +1 to their Economic Development Track.

Combat in the Badlands

In the Badlands, freezing weather has gripped the rocky plateaus.

With resources flowing into both sides this turn, lots of things have dropped in expense.  Configuring their TC to allow for 5 Ore/3 Oil means they do not have the transport capacity left over to collect an Oil from over seas, but there's little downside to this.  The Paradigm and Hippo have both dropped an expense level and are now Cheap and Expensive, respectively.  For Toskesh, their Piāoqiè guānsī has also dropped to Expensive, and their Qi-Chu and Yīfānfēngshùn rocket artillery is now Cheap.  Expense levels are pretty evenly matched across the board except for aircraft where Nogrania's aluminum comes into play, and the drop in cost means we will be seeing a lot more armor on the field.

Indeed, Nogrania makes their push into the Badlands this turn in an attempt to disrupt Toskesh's EDT generation.  They make excellent use of their cheaper armor and mobile artillery to support their mechanized assault, and overhead their new Tornado's hover to warily cover their advance.  Ridiculously cheap Qi-Chu's, which have always done well in this theatre, harass the advancing lines non-stop.  Being cheap means they can afford to lose a few of them when Nogrania's Tornado's come to punish the assaults, but the new attack helicopter is well-suited to the role and even a few of them are enough to wipe out the unarmored Qi-Chu's as they attempt to flee.  They aren't alone, however; the Xīwàng is just as plentiful and a match for the heavy attack helicopter.  Though the Xīwàng has one engine for the Tornado's two, it weighs considerably less and is equipped with rockets and a Garin Bicycle Tun NMG setup that affords the gunner some excellent accuracy.  The Tornado can shrug off a few NMG rounds at medium range, but getting hit by a Jin Na rocket is pretty crippling.  Helicopter duels are quick and deadly, and casualties among pilots sky-rocket for both sides - though the fact that the Tornado is cheap means they outnumber the Xiwang and have the advantage.

The Xīwàng can do one thing the Tornado can't do, however; ground pound armor.  When they can get in, the air assaults are pretty hard on the troops down below - though Nogrania now has a new way to push back the death from above.  The NAF-RL-53 "Gin na Tonic" rockets leave squiggly smoke trails in the sky as they race upwards at enemy helicopters.  They aren't ideal, but they're generally more effective than the Kiwi Anti-Material rifles and Emu NMG's Nogrania has been using thus far.  Toskesh can still get some hits in, but they're less damaging than they were before.  More importantly, the new Gin na Tonic rockets now give infantry a more reliable way of dealing with enemy armor - this is especially useful now that the Piāoqiè guānsī tank walker is down an expense level.  The rockets invariably knock out legs when they hit.  In tank walker combat things are about tied - both sides can penetrate one another, are well-supported by infantry, and are able to bring mobile artillery down at will.  Toskesh has their Xiwang for air support, and Nogrania has their Draught, which is inferior but more plentiful.  The fact that Nogrania's Gin na Tonic RL's are Expensive gives Toskesh an advantage, and the more mobile (but still inaccurate) Qi-Chu's with their rocket barrages is a match for the now cheap Paradigm and it's 4" Duke load-out.  Rhino's and Li-Jiǎo Guàiwù still rule the roost when it comes to armor, and are similar enough to one another that there's not really an advantage either way.

Nogrania still has the mobility advantage in ground combat and is able to support their advances with their Megamule walkers.  Toskesh attempts to do the same with their new 'Luànbīng', but the effect isn't as pronounced.  Even if the Luànbīng wasn't Expensive, it still wouldn't be able to compare 1:1 to the Megamule.  It's faster and less prone to terrain impediments, but service time is higher and it doesn't have the same raw capacity as the Megamule.  Toskesh is able to make much better use of the Luànbīng by loading troops into the passenger area and drop entire squads behind enemy lines.  A dozen rocket-equipped soldiers popping up behind your artillery dig-in isn't anything to sneeze at, and with the larger capacity and speed the new helicopter is able to out-perform the Draft in this role.  These hit-and-run operations are tough on supply lines.

Combat is fairly even, but Nogrania's air advantage pushes them into the lead.

Nogrania has pushed north and gained a section of the Badlands!

Combat in the Fjords

Both sides push the Fjords this year as snows trickle down from above.

Much as with the Badlands, air combat is fairly even.  Nogrania has a slight advantage on ground as their Paradigm is more suited to climbing hills than Toskesh's Qi-Chu.  Toskesh is able to make good use of their Luànbīng to drop behind enemy lines, just as Nogrania is able to use their Draft and Red Herring to drop fire teams of their own.  With so many factors even, victory ultimately goes to Nogrania, who has naval advantage in the seas this turn.

Nogrania has pushed north and gained a section of the Fjords!

Combat in the Eastern Seas

Toskesh's new helicopter Tender vastly out-performs Nogrania's fumbling attempts to use Whale's to support their float-equipped helicopters.  The Xiwang is able to out-peform the Draft any day of the week as a ground attacker, and with dedicated carriers they can field more of them, more consistently, and more often.  In fact, with the seas so choppy this season, Nogrania isn't able to make use of their air support at all.  Their only real advantage is the 4" guns on their ships which out-range the 50 mm's Toskesh is still using, but the Yange is sturdy enough that with air support Toskesh can often win engagements.  HE rockets and strafing runs will shred the lightly-armored Herald destroyers, and obliterate any Red Herring unlucky enough to get caught under their guns.

Toskesh has pushed south and gained a section of the Eastern Seas!

Can we get a closer look at those wings? My understanding of helicopter flight dynamics is not great, but I suspect that helicopters move "up" rather than "forwards" and thus wings don't do much for their stability unless they are behaving like aeroplanes(and would actually lose stability because the wings pushing them forwards would make them face-plant, lift generation would change things a bit though.), in which instance they are probably actually wings, and thus providing lift for a classical, if brief, aeroplane-style flight pattern. But if they are not providing lift then they aren't wings... I mean, wings are pretty recognisable, they have their special shape for perverting air pressure. A picture would probably be enough, or footage of the helicopters making use of them in flight... I doubt we would need to wind-tunnel the things.

Then there is the issue of whether a craft with both fixed-wing and rotary-wing lift is both or neither. It should be an easy argument that the laws are there to stop the listed things from being done, and that it doesn't matter what else is happening if a breach is taking place. There is also the argument that they can't take off as fixed-wing, so their maximum load is limited to rotary, and they can't fly purely on fixed so their fuel-economy and max-speed is limited, but it is still clearly tacking a breach of law onto a design.

Then there is the tactical issue of delaying until they make a second helicopter based upon the design. That way we could hit a design and a revision instead of just a design, but it means an extra turn of being hit by fixed-wing attacks.

Does anyone know how to design a small, agile hovercraft with a semi-automatic grenade-launcher? Give it a winch and a detachable sled and it could climb vertical cliffs. Wouldn't be any good at fighting like that, but it should be enough to get a highly mobile combat platform to all parts of the Fjords for example... It oculd also ferry supplies and troops around. Not many in any single trip, but with many of them working in concert...

A resumed and updated version of the Dragonfly

A modification of our original radio system, the Dragonfly uses transistor technology in order to provide a more compact and resistant version of our radio, with an enhanced battery life, as well as providing jamming capabilities and improving troop morale.

The radio can be linked to two transmitters which go at very high speed around the AM spectrum (each covering half of it) repeating static, deeply annoying sounds or prerecorded classical opera that transform any kind of transmission into garble. However, they leave an open secure channel of 2.5 Mhz, which can be used for troop communication. The end point of each transmitters changes every 5 seconds, keeping the standard separation between them, effectively moving the secure channel. The changes occur according waterproofed punctured cardboard cards (changed daily and easily identified with a character), which can be inserted in the machine and serves for up to fifteen minutes, at which point it goes in reverse. The mechanism can be put into motion without activating the radio, saving up energy and making the radio ready to use at the press of a button.

The radio might work with (Winged variant) or without (Clipped variant) the channel switching mechanism. This should lighten the load on our soldier and vehicles. Powerful loudspeakers can be attached to the radio in order to play a recorded piece, be it to entertain the soldiery or blast the enemy troops in a helicopter ambush.

A tactical add-on of the Clipped variant, using VHF, for soldier usage and with a shorter range than the AM and a slimmer 1 Mhz channel, will be developed as well. This is used in infantry and most of the vehicles, except the ones meant for large area jamming, which would use the Winged variant (any kind of vehicle can use both, but preferably transport helicopters and unarmed Immortal planes will use the Winged variant).

A disassembled Winged variant (including an antenna) can be carried by five men without making them unable to field heavy equipment or two men restrained to rifles. This radio would preferable deployed in high altitude to increase its range, and covered up with a camouflage net to difficult enemy detection.

Finally, we have developed in secret transmitters to cover all the radio spectrum, easily connected to the radio to counter any kind of enemy workaround to the radio. A paper sheet with code terms is included, so communication can be more efficiently used to inform about enemy positions or certain common circumstances (weather, supply levels...etc).

Hard Difficult: 2

The Dragonfly is our first foray into transistors.

The new AM radio is considerably smaller and lighter, allowing a soldier to carry it without having to sacrifice pieces of his kit.  Channels hopping wasn't developed in time, but non-Toskesh channels are blasted with static to ideally disrupt Nogranian operations.  The new radio doesn't have much greater range or clarity than our previous design, but the smaller size, battery life, and durability of the radio is terribly useful.  The new transistors are difficult to make, leaving this technology at [COMPLEX] for the time being.

Before we take any action, we have to think of what we want to achieve here. Do we want to take back the Badlands, push through the Mountains or consolidate our hold on the sea and Fjords?

If we are planning to do any kind of advancement in the sea, we need to adapt our cannons to our ships. Possibly giving them some kind of perk, like an autoloader. Airburst shells so do as much good to provide some form of AA.

We don´t know what they will do as a design, but they will surely decomplex our Jin Na and add it to their Assault helicopters potentially beating us in the air. We could try to scale this back with some kind of flak gun or doing a general rocket revision that includes rocket pods. These options would be optimal for the Badlands and possibly the mountains.

Fjords would be a safe lane of advancing, while Badlands would be a very rewarding one, as well as the Sea, which would disrupt one TC from them. We would be kind of fucked if they complete the Mountains EDT, but we have many turns to preoccupy ourselves about that.

Xi-54 Zhao De 150 mm Artillery cannon

An upgrade on our ground artillery piece, doubling its caliber and introducing a few adjustments in order to win an edge against the enemy. The Xi-54 Zhao De is equipped with a Soviet copied autoloader, as well as a soft recoil system to improve accuracy and the development of HEAT, white phosphorous and airburst shells. The shells can be modified with base bleed in order to improve the range, although lowering both accuracy and payload.

We have also made a few modifications to its base, allowing to transplant field artillery models to our ships and to greatly adjust the angle of the cannon, allowing our troops to more effectively use indirect fire. Better stabilizers are developed, in order to allow for similar accuracy in Qui-Chu mounted models.

We will intend to retrofit many of our new developments into our 75 mm as we can, in order not to make it outdated. Finally, we will put the our new gun into our heavier Hexapod and, if it fits, into our Paoquie Guansi as well.

Double the size of our biggest cannon alone is a very hard revision.

You also want to add:
an autoloader
soft recoil system
HEAT shells
white phosphorus shells
airburst shells
base bleed
better stabilizers for Qui-Chu
modify base improve firing angle
upgun our ships from 50mm to 150mm
upgun our heavy walker from 75mm to 150mm
upgun our light walker from 50mm to 150mm
upgun our hovercraft from 50mm to 150mm?
apply all relevant improvements to the 75mm cannon.

This is an impossible revision.

I honestly think we should just upgun all our ships from the 50mm to the 75mm. It should be easy or normal and it will double our firepower at sea.

Shǎndiànzhàn Naval Cannon

Given the widespread state of disarray present in our navy, where-in they continue to utilize outdated weapons compared to our land forces, the design team has chosen to dedicate the people's resources towards both integrating our 75 mm high velocity piece on all our naval vessels and developing an autoloader to greatly increase the weapon's rate of fire, which is ridiculously low for it's caliber.

If time permits, and as a last priority, the high velocity 75 mm cannon is upgunned to a 150 mm caliber.
