Attacking visitors

If you tell your squads to attack and kill a visitor from another civilization/species, will you be able to provoke war?

I'm asking because there's a human with a really nice iron whip hanging around in my tavern but I don't want to risk war and sieges with an enemy that actually has good equipment.

Firstly, you're a coward ;)

No, you can currently murder visitors to your (black) heart's content. The only risks are if they defend themselves or if they have friends/relatives who get involved, but you don't have to take any risks if you arrange an unfortunate accident...

However, you can just steal their equipment. If I understand it correctly, you can mark their equipment for dumping, after which citizens will just take the equipment from the visitors and dump it. Obviously, that's unsatisfying if you actually want to engage in murder...

Not too sure. I believe the elf civilization declared war on me because there was a surviving witness elf visitor standing next to the drawbridge that crushed his bugged mates.
I can't think of any reason why else the elves would have declared war on me after first sending a few caravans that left unharmed. Didn't have a baron yet either, so no tree mandates.
