So, this latest update is just the weirdest setup and payoff I've ever seen, it's really good and pretty funny, but really weird.

Props to Abbadon for going ahead with such a strange approach.
I mean, it looks like the normal amount of weird that's common in a relationship, to me.
Pretty sure NullForce meant in the context of how Abbadon set up Allison and Cio banging in the first place - until now we hadn't had explicit confirmation that they were porking or not, so seeing her at first doing magic lessons made it seem as if they were in more of a platonic relationship... and then "wanna have sex" in the next page. Classic bait and switch.

I just meant the setup, not the relationship, the framing is just strange to me for some reason.

It's not that any of it is illogical or even unexpected, it's that the delivery is somehow just odd.

Don't get me wrong, I think it's actually very cute and a really funny scene, it just "feels" kind of off.

How many relationships between a recovering murderqueen criminal demon fanfiction writer and her student-slash-former-barista-turned-godling-who-is-also-The-King-with-capital-T-and-K-yo have you watched unfold? Cio is pretending to be a little lady, she has to be reminded how to human, and has been shipping her crush on Allison for actual years now.

Once again, I'm not talking about the story part of it, I am talking about the conscious structural framing of the past two pages, from an artistic standpoint.

Something about the panels itself is what feel "off", and I'm not even sure what it is that makes me feel that way, it like the buildup is drawn out in a weird way and the payoff resolves one panel too quickly.  I can't explain any more clearly because I'm not sure what elements of the two pages are even throwing me a curveball.

Mayhaps it's the way the background is discarded as Alice and Cio look at each other? It makes them more emphasized on the page, but it also looks a bit strange when I acknowledge it.

I think that may be part of it, but there's also something with the composition of the page that seems a bit strange, it is very distracting to me and I just am really unclear on why.

I really like the way Abaddon played the double bait and switch here tho', it was a very cute way to play with reader expectations and I think it fit very well narratively and thematically.

I get the same feeling; almost like they're timidly written and drawn accordingly? There's literally not a lot going on in those panels in terms of background, but what there is comes across as blatant and simplistic in a way most of Abaddon's stuff decidedly does not. It feels almost matter-of-fact. Now, that may just be me reading into the comic an awareness of how this was going to set the comments section on fire, but it's missing the usual level of crypticism that helps lend the comic an air of immersion in the alien.

Two pages back, we had so much more going on: the monkeys, Jack, the kids, the birds, the shops, White Chain's pose, the sky, all these little vignettes that make every panel feel like a window into a broader world. Sure, Allison's describing it in everyday terms, but there's all these little bits and pieces that belie her lack of wonderment -- and we can read more from that into how her character has changed.

Now, stick a similarly short text box in the last panel saying something euphemistic about her activities with Cio, and it's less a point of view and more of a summary. Heck, the last four panels could be about one emoji each and you'd lose little. It's like it's afraid to be unclear, and that's...not KSBD.

I think I generally agree with most of that.  I believe that the intent of fading out the other details was to emphasize Cio and Allison directly, but it seems to have backfired somehow.

It is also amazing how two people have turned the comments for the last page into a sea of fire.

I think people are overanalyzing here. Like the lack of background: Abbadon has to cut corners all the time with the art.
The latest 2 pages are constructed a bit like an anti-joke with a punchline (wanna sex?) and then an extra panel where the tension just evaporates. That does not work for all readers, I guess.

Edit:
It is also amazing how two people have turned the comments for the last page into a sea of fire.
Without reading it I Ctrl+F'ed "pander" and got 8 results.
All those "discussions" are the same.

One of them by dropping a single comment. Now that's some master bait.

That or Hate is Spectator's alt and we're watching a master troll at work, singlehandedly setting alight a whole comment section.

I'm half tempted to believe that the nameless poster who keeps responding to A Spectator is a sockpuppet being used to drive the tension even further.  At the least I'd ready a warning for A Spectator for the blatant spamming (but I'm not a mod and I wouldn't really want to be one).

I think you're drastically underestimating the readiness with which randos will engage in heated argument.

Well, "you are all fools for disagreeing with me" is a self-perpetuating argument.
