A couple uncommon questions I couldn't find on the wiki
« on: December 25, 2017, 01:11:04 am »

As I attempt to knock out more items on my DF to-do list, I have found my knowledge a bit lacking.  First; How do you extract seeds from food-only plants?  'Process Plants' = thread baring plants, 'Process to Bag' = quarry bush, and 'Process to Barrel' = sweet pod.  Is there a command at a different workshop that I am unaware of?

Second; Is it possible to specify a dump zone when unloading cages?  I have a number of hostiles I want to dispose of (saving the best captives for a special project).  However, I use three 1-tile dump zones to QSP my boulders, and unleashing a horde of critters in the middle of my masonry/craftdwarf workshops would be !FUN!  Oh, while I'm thinking about it.  How the heck do you remove gear from a prisoner?  I thought it was inspect or view, but those don't provide the captive's inventory.

Those process jobs produce both the expected product as well as their seeds.

For pitting prisoners, make a zone using the pit/pond zone and set it to pit.

Just now, a merchant drowned under misterious circumstances on his way to my fortress. When I examined the corpse, he had a book on him that talked about flotation devices and buoyancy.

Food that's eaten raw results in seeds being released (often left lying around after dwarves have eaten). You probably know cooking destroys seeds. Your text is somewhat scrambled, so it's not clear if you as about workshop seed extraction or state that you already know about them, but seeds are extracted in the Farmer's Workshop and the Still. I don't quite remember what the first step of papyrus making is, but that step also extracts seeds (although papyrus cannot be eaten, "only" used for writing material production).

Dumping cannot specify zones, unfortunately, so you either use a single zone, juggle multiple zones with only one active at a time (hoping the previous lot of dumping has been finished before you switch), or have multiple zones and let DF decide which one to dump stuff in. I haven't found a way to see if there are any dumping jobs remaining, since DF only brings up some of them on the Jobs list, and that list can be empty of dumping jobs even if there are ones outstanding (that will show up later).

I believe there are two major ways to strip prisoners:
- d-b-d over the animal stockpile where the prisoners are kept, followed my manually undesignating each cage from dumping. That will dump all the prisoners gear, but will NOT remove the prisoners from the cages (to "dump" them). Forgetting to undesignate the cages will just get those dumped too, after which you can unforbid them to be hauled back, without resulting in any catastrophes. This is the method I use.
- Using the stocks screen's to dump first categories of things only prisoners have, and then tab over to the individual items to mark those. The stock screen method has also been said to work as a means to rob visitors ("said to" as I haven't tried that myself. Definitely handy if you're about to eliminate a visiting vampire merc, as weapon experts are a lot easier to deal with when not armed and armored, as my ill placed advice once showed that taking them on without stripping them first leads to a significant demand for new coffins).

Regarding the plants, for many of them there is no possible way to extract seeds. It's a known bug.

Pretty much everything that cannot be processed, milled or brewed cannot be farmed reliably.

That's what I was looking for!  Totally spaced that Pond & Pit were shared.

I could have sworn there was a way to specify equipment for removal, like if I wanted them to keep a weapon or something.  I'll have to see if I figure out a way to view their inventory beforehand.

That's unfortunate.  For RP reasons, I was really hoping to grow a supply of potatoes and onions.  Ah well.  Thanks for the info everyone!

Everything that can be converted into booze yields seeds when processed (excluding honey, of course), so potatoes should be possible to grow.

I think there is a way to access prisoner inventory while they're in the cage as well, but I'm not sure, and it might be available only for built cages.

What you CAN do, is "Encourage" dwarves to eat the desired crops, by mass forbidding EVERYTHING ELSE for awhile.  It will make lots of dwarves peeved, but only mildly.  Most importantly, it prioritizes the production of the crop seeds you are looking for.

I do not believe it is possible to view a caged creature's inventory in vanilla DF. You could 'd' 'b' 'd' over the cages then go to the Stocks menu to see which weapons were marked for dumping and then zoom to the location of each to see which cage it is in, but that seems like a pita. Someday a bunch of invading goblins are going to kill a woodcutter and then one will pick up and equip the steel battleaxe your woodcutter was using.

But it won't happen to me, my bit doesn't count etc etc... Just saying, after my recent experiences I couldn't trust the public if I wanted to. People got their risk assessment neurons rotten and replaced with game theory. Folks walk around like fat turkeys taunting the world to slaughter them.

While I don't mind rounding out my booze supply with potato vodka, I was specifically interested in cooking them.

That's a pretty clever solution.  Though the amount of time that would be required to build up a sufficient stockpile of seeds makes it impractical for my purposes.  I don't need the extra ingredients that badly, lol.

Winner winner plump helmet dinner.  With the aid of DFHack's enhanced inventory view, I can search "caged", and see the inventory of all captives.  Zooming to location works here as well.  I was able to mark a prisoner's inventory for Melting, but I don't know if that actually works.  Marking individual items for Dumping was allowed, will have to see if that works.
