Most recent stable version?
« on: December 24, 2017, 07:53:34 pm »

Been away for a few years, stuck on a laptop without a mouse. Have tried the newest version but has crashed to desktop three times before the first in-game month has passed.

Was 43.05 the last stable release? I notice most mods stopped at 43.03.

Dwarf Fortress is still in alpha. Don't think any release could be called "stable". 43.05 will crash when your weapon traps wear out. 44.02 won't but visitor caps and a lot of the new adventurer features (and some older ones) are broken. Take your pick.

Might want to wait until 44.03. Some of the more annoying bugs and some crashes have been fixed.

Or wait until the release after that. Or the next one. Or wait 30 years until ver 1.0...

Sorry, didn't intend to offend. Merely wanted to play the game longer than 10 minutes without crashing to desktop.

Since nobody else is having this problem, it's almost certainly to do with your hardware (or you've downloaded some third party crashy package). Are you trying to play the 64 bit version in a 32 bit OS, perhaps?

Neither 43.05 or 44.02 suffer from a 'crash after 10 minutes for no reason' bug. That's not what I meant by not stable. There are some crashes in certain situations (some of which have been marked as fixed for 44.03).

The three prominent bugs that I recall that caused crashes in 43.03 and 43.05 were:
- weapon traps where the weapon degraded and broke
- scrolling upward in the Stocks screen to get to the last page (if I recall correctly, just in 43.03)
- falling objects with a weight less than 0.03 that hit a dwarf in a small body location (roughly described)
There was nothing random about the crashes and I only recall one crash that could not be linked to one of these.

There is something to be said about, if the stakes are as high, maybe reconsider your certitudes. One has to be aggressively allistic to feel entitled to be able to trust. But it won't happen to me, my bit doesn't count etc etc... Just saying, after my recent experiences I couldn't trust the public if I wanted to. People got their risk assessment neurons rotten and replaced with game theory. Folks walk around like fat turkeys taunting the world to slaughter them.

Are you trying to play the 64 bit version in a 32 bit OS, perhaps?
It can't possibly be that, because trying to run a 64-bit program on a 32-bit operating system simply won't do anything at all (specifically, it will just display an error about an architecture mismatch and then exit).

A better question would be: are you running DFHack 0.44.02-alpha1? If so, there's at least one plugin, enabled by default, which can cause the game to crash when you're editing Military settings (because one of the data structure definitions was incorrect, which has since been fixed in DFHack 0.44.02-beta1).

P.S. If you don't get this note, let me know and I'll write you another.
It's amazing how dwarves can make a stack of bones completely waterproof and magmaproof.
It's amazing how they can make an entire floodgate out of the bones of 2 cats.

That was what I meant by 'crashy third party package' there's usually several about. Always check if vanilla actually works on your computer before assuming it's anything to do with DF. Crash bugs, especially those that occur frequently (like in 44.01) are never ignored.
