I'm here, playing DCSS, a roguelike, I always liked, but abandoned a while ago. I'm kinda bad at it, really. But it's fun.

First, I'm playing what I like. Then it'll be voting.

Also, I started playing before I adopted the name "KittyTac". So, registering anew. There are lots of new additions since I've left, probably.



Playing DrCj (Draconian Conjurer), Draconians start with decent stats, can't wear body armor, and gain a breath attack and a resistance at level 7. My favorite race. Conjurers are... Offensive wizards, basically.



We started in an entry vault, basically a flashy dungeon entrance. There's a potion below me, not drinking it right away, waiting until I get identify.



This is a bat, a really weak monster. Since Magic Dart (Starting Cj spell) never misses, this will be easy prey.



RIP bat.

Butchered its corpse and got a chunk of flesh. Chunks of flesh can only be eaten when hungry or less. Can't do that yet.



This is some gold, a common item used for buying in shops. Also, I'm 99% sure I'll die before seeing a shop, not playing for about a year and all.



I fired all my 3 MP at this ooze. I have to melee it.

It didn't leave a corpse, a common property of inorganic monsters.

From this point on, monsters being killed will not be announced unless they're particularly hard.



Jackals. I might be screwed since I forgot to press 5 to rest.

Ran out of MP and got killed. Potion turned out to be healing. That was warmup. Let's do this again.

DrCj again, killed a kobold and got his short sword. Better than bare hands.

I've reached level 2. I Can now learn another spell. Searing ray.



This is shorter ranged, but if you wait while casting it, it gets more powerful. Useful against herds of enemies.

Also, you can butcher sentients here. And eat their meat.

Found a dagger of protection. As I'm not going to be meleeing things, this is going to be useful.

Found a scroll. Generally safe to just test.

Identify. but I have nothing that is unidentified.

Found another identify and a potion. Identifying the potion. Brilliance. Useful in tight moments.

Went down a level.

I have reached level 3. I can make one of my stats better. Choosing int.

Found scroll. Read it. Enchant armor. Enchanted my boots.

Found scroll. Blinking.

Found a ring. Waiting until another identify.

To my left is an enchanted cloak. +2. Neat.



These are gnolls. Might be the end of me.

I ran. Recharged my MP while running, and killed them all with Searing Ray.



This is an altar to Makhleb. The god Makhleb allows you to recharge HP from kills, and summon demons. Useful.



Well, crap. The orc priest is dangerous and needs to be killed first.

Priest is dead.



Used my blinking scroll to escape. Got caught and died. What should I play next?

I'm playing a DrFI, Draconian Fighter. I remember it was quite viable back in the day.

Started with a trident. Polearms are good.

Identified 2 pots of curing. Curing is less powerful than Heal Wounds, but more common.



Meet Terence, the unique monster. Still quite easy for an unique.

Are they like Sigmund, where they have special powers like invisibility and memes?

Like Sigmund. This one is able to go berserk or mighty, I'm either wrong or killed him so quickly that it didn't matter. This type of uniques I call "EXP Pinatas".

Continuing where we left off:

Fighters and most other melee classes are best played this way: o (auto-explore), tab (auto-fight), repeat until you find something challenging or loot.

Found a scroll. Noise. This is why you read-id only on the earlier dungeon. The worst that can come here is a pack of jackals, and I can deal with those.

Found a faded altar. The faded altars provide you a random god, but give you extra piety for that god. I'd rather not take the risk.

Wound wand of iceblast. This is decent for when you want to soften up an enemy before tabbing.



That's an ogre, the first really dangerous monster.

Got cornered and died. Welp.

Warmup.

Okay! Due to a lack of input, playing DrFi again.

Ooh, 3 identify scrolls.



Altar to Xom. I don't know about you, but I don't want to be struck by lightning while fighting enemies.

Wights attacked, but I drank a potion of might and survived.

Found +4 trident.

Found Natasha, the felid wizard. Another EXP pinata that resurrects itself 3 times.

Found an ogre. I'm better-leveled this time!

Killed the ogre and leveled to level 7. Got the white color. Ice. That allows me to breathe blasts of ice.

Found +3 ring of strength. Awesome.

Found a scarf of repulsion. Now it's hard to hit me with ranged weapons.

Found wand of disintegration. I feel like I'm going to die horribly very soon.



Dowan and Duvessa, two elves whose abilities complement each other.

No problem at all with a pot of might.

Reached the Ecumenical Temple, a collection of altars.

Picked Trog, who allows you to go berserk and gives you rare weapons.

Found Eustachio, a unique who can summon imps. Since I can't yet go berserk and blew my might already, I have to run.

Killed him.

Found a jelly. These can corrode weapons, so first I weakened it with my ice breath.

Found +6 amulet of reflection. Noice.

Found Pikel the kobold slaver. He has some minions around him, but shouldn't be so bad.

Found a player ghost. This is basically an AI-controlled previous player that tries to frigging murder you. Dangerous.

Drank Might and killed it.

Scroll of brand weapon. Awesome! Using it on my +4 trident. Venom. Could be better.



This is Yiuf's hut. He would be dangerous for a character that wasn't overleveled. Free EXP. In one hit, because he was sleeping. And now I can berserk!

Porkins is Intrigued!

Also, Terence doesnt have anything special. He just tries to hit you real hard. He has an HP potion sometimes, so keep that in mind.

Also, ditch the trident when you can. Polearms deal less damage on average then other weapons of a similar level.

Personally, in my experience with melee (Which, TBH, is not much (CONJURER FTW), reach rarely is THAT important unless you have an enemy thats slower then you. Which there arent too many

Well, I poured too much skill into this trident, not gonna switch.

Found DEFe (Deep Elf Fire Elementalist) ghost. Berserked, killed.

Game got updated, for some reason, all foodstuffs are simply "rations" now.

Ooh, potion shop. Buying the heal wounds one.

Centaur shot at me, but its arrows reflected off my scarf and amulet and hit it, killing it. This happens.



This is an Ossuary, an Egyptian-themed micro-branch. Contains lots of potions, including Heal Wounds, the most useful IMO.

Going in.

Got lots of potions, including 1 heal wounds, and some scrolls.

Found jewelry shop, bought ring of resist corrosion. Useful for jellies.

Found weapon shop, but, unfortunately, no polearms.

Found a two-headed ogre. Dangerous. berserking.

Found draconian ghost. These have a nasty draining breath.

As I was recovering from my berserk, Sonja the kobold comes. I'm teleporting away.

Recovered.

Nergalle the orc. As I was berserking, Sonja comes again. Teleporting again.

ERICA? RNG is trying to kill me. Went upstairs with Erica to kill her.

Went back and killed Sonja.



This is The Lair, the first true dungeon branch. Going there.

Trog gave me ammunition. Thanks, Trog, for a thing I'm probably not gonna use.



Gastronok the slug. Really beefy.

Found an entrance to the Snake Pit. Not going in there yet.

Order of completion, as pulled from an IRC bot: Lair -> D:12 -> Orc -> D:15 -> S:3 -> maybe other S:3 -> maybe Elf:1-2 -> get one S rune -> Vaults:4 -> get second S rune -> maybe Crypt -> Depths:5 -> get three runes -> Zot ("S" means Shoals/Snake/Spider/Swamp)

Ran into a pack of death yaks, RETREAT!

Cuz one crit can mean game over. I'm starting out as a naga fire ele since that's what I find most fun. Gonna practice-up for next month's tourny!!

Regular yaks are manageable, death yaks, though... you have to be ridiculously overleveled to stand a real chance.
