and I mean EVERYTHING, stuff like lions, alligator and giant animals I understand, but in the summer, I get bombarded with "urist mcsomething cancels haul, interrupted by buzzard or some other thing" it gets to the point where I have to lock the doors and keep them inside, the thing is, these buzzards or whatever else is interrupting my dwarves, are like 10 z layers above them flying lazily about

dude, buzzards are super aggressive. you leave an animal outside the buzzards will attack it.

buzzards have never ever bothered me. ever, they just fly around and cause spam cancellations for me

they steal food and bite at your dwarves and animals. the dwarves not going out because of buzzards is justified (would you want to deal with a 5 foot bird that wants to bite at you)

like I said, never had problems with buzzards, not even there giant forms

I've had buzzards kill some of my dwarves before, I'd call the fear a good idea.

Personally, I make it so they can't fly. First, they can't cancellation spam you, and second, it saves on FPS.

I kind of agree.  Also, my Fortress has elephants running about outside and they don't seem to even notice them.  I mean, I would think they would be scared of a herd of wild elephants but they just end up hunting them down for food every once and a while.      But Giant Louse makes them run in fear?

Well in their defense, I would also probably run from a parasitic arthropod close to my own size.

Yeah, any insect larger than me is going to be more terrifying than anything less than a giant lion. And this is coming from someone who saves the massive spiders that terrorizes their family to keep as pets...

It's because elephants have the BENIGN tag, meaning they are explicitly non-hostile.

Wild animal AI sucks at the moment.  Elephants will run away from dwarves even though they are far larger, the only real options for wild animals are attack everything or run away from everything.
