Alcohol poisoning

I'm losing about 2 dwarves a month to alcohol poisoning, starting about 10 dwarves ago, in my fortress of 100. I have a tavern with a pure booze stockpile and a nearby prepared meals stockpile.

1) Should this be happening normally?
2) Is there anything that I can do to stop it?
3) There's one odd case of a dwarf, Tobul Gamilkikrost, that, according to the slab, "Suffocated, slain by the dwarf Urdim Brushsteel". And Urdim does show Tobul in his kills. Is this a normal alcohol poisoning or is there something else I should be wary about here?

The cause of alcohol poisoning is alcohol being shoved down the throat of tavern patron. This is done by tavern keepers and performers allocated to the tavern (both types seem so serve alcohol to the same extent, as well as perform to the same extent, which for the latter means they seem to perform about as much as normal patrons). Thus, you can get rid of the poisoning by leaving your tavern unstaffed and just let the citizens self serve. An natural side effect of this is that the Visitite mining operations cease (by you can still steal everything visitors own, possibly excluding books, if you so desire, and you can also plain murder them).
Another effect of alcohol serving is a significant increase of lethal "non lethal" bar brawls, which probably is what happened in your 3:rd point.
It can also be noted that people that want death and mayhem in their taverns don't seem to get the desired effect through the appointment of poisoners, while those who just want their dorfs to be happy seem to get these effects.

In my current game, I modded dwarves to have slightly larger livers, as well as have a higher syndrome dilution factor for intoxication. I don't have a tavern yet though, so I need to wait and see if it works.

But yeah, without modding it can be prevented by not staffing the taverns. I ragequit my previous fort when one of the starting seven died from alcohol poisoning.
I wouldn't have minded it if he died during a bar brawl, but dwarves dying from alcohol is just to immersion breaking for me to be able to endure.

EDIT: one more thing that might prevent alcohol deaths, or at least make them more rare, is to stock your tavern with only 1 or 2 mugs, but I'm not sure if the tavern keeper needs to wait for a dwarf to haul a mug back into the chest before starting another serve drink job.

I never knew that dwarves cannot drink alcohol excessively and I thought they can drink their ass off forever. You guys helped me prove otherwise.

I would actully like if that returned (not the whole mug part), it's realistic (and cats licking their paws can lead to death)

Just caught a dwarf in the act struggling to breathe on top of the stairwell. Right after I missed a goblin performer visitor dying of intoxication.
I'll try unstaffing the tavern and seeing what happens over time.

Do you have a hospital? I get almost no alcohol deaths. But I do get people being hauled off from the tavern to hospital next door for no apparent reason (they leave right away with only happy thoughts of being rescued and inebriation).

They still do it, but a pawful of alcohol isn't counted as a mugfull any more.

I have a hospital down the stairs and ten units to the right. It's really understaffed right now because of me trying to fix the traction bench bug, but it's been completely empty so far.

A dwarf or visitor dying here and there sucks but in my last two forts tavern brawls have turned into fortress wiping melees. Having only one or two goblets in the entire fort seems to help. If you have the tavern set to only store 1 or 2 goblets but have more than that in the fort, it seems to work like the hospital cloth/thread storage bug where if a serve drink job is created and using your 1 designated goblet, another dwarf will stock a different goblet thus going over the storage max ad infinitum.

Visitors mostly come equipped with lethal weapons these days.
hehe I always mine my visitite (dumping their weapons and armor and equipping my dwarves with it)

I found this thread after having a string of mysterious deaths in my fortress where I've had five visitors and three dwarves mysteriously drop dead in the past year. I don't even realize the visitors die until I see a new body in the corpse pile outside, and when a dwarf dies I get the announcement that they were just suddenly found dead.

I ended up using Legends mode to see that they all died of suffocation, which I then learned is actually alcohol poisoning.

My hospital is ten squares down the hallway from the tavern, and I've never seen an individual taken there after drinking themselves unconscious. The most recent death, my hunter died in the library with four other dwarves in there reading and leaving him to die instead of taking him to the hospital.

In a game where losing is fun, I still feel like this is a pretty irritating mechanic because it's not intuitive. You're trained that your dwarves need alcohol, you can't control how much they drink of it, and then your workforce starts offing themselves because you're letting them do what you've been trained to.

Your fortress getting rekt by a mega beast that stopped in for lunch is fun. Your fortress getting flooded because you mismanaged a floodgate is fun. Your population slowly, mysteriously, declining because a game feature (tavern) doesn't work the way you'd expect and you can't figure out why without save scrubbing and checking legends mode is not fun.

Don't staff the tavern with poisoners. A number of players like trying to get "non lethal" brawls going and get visitors killed by alcohol poisoning, losing an occasional migrant replaceable dorf in the process. I don't, but I don't staff my tavern either.
