Pathetic Attack Attempts Normal?
« on: November 28, 2017, 07:38:16 pm »

I've been playing on a pocket-sized world for a while, with Goblins being the largest population. One of their dark forts has over 10,000 people, so it says. I've accumulated enough wealth to get a Monarch, so I started to really ramp up my military.

However, I'm wondering if this is worth it. With over 100 citizens and many years into the fort, the Goblins have so far only sent 6 unarmed dwarven recruits and a Marksdwarf to attack me, and only some animals and a noble got hurt. Later, I got attacked by a Hill Titan, but it was only a water blob with a poisonous bite. Since the game so far hasn't been very FUN, I'm wondering if I should focus on military in case the goblins attack, or perhaps work on larger building projects.

They only send regular sieges from the nearest site to you. If that's population 6, then it doesn't matter about the nearby pop 10,000 fortress. You're only going to get tiny sieges.

Now, the latest version has more war mechanics going on that haven't been tested yet. If a spy from the dark fortress reports on your artifacts, it's possible that they might send over an army. That's if it's working properly. Needs more Science. Do you have plenty of artifacts and a tavern full of spies?

This post informs my tavern design.

Lots of display cases full of artifacts dotting the tavern, with an entry/exit lined with war dogs and worse.

there is nothing funnier than watching a goblin army get assaulted by hundreds of war chickens.

Any new discovery, sufficiently weaponize, is indistinguishable from !!FUN!!

Indeed. Embrace your spies, show off your artifacts (and steal everybody else's). That should lead to a lot of Fun (if it's working).

that, or encourage artifact theft.

.....increases the Fun when you go to get them back, and piss off the thieves.

At some point theft will escalate.
Has anyone seen the new artifact demanding sieges yet?

In fact, has anyone run into a non-kobold thief yet?

I haven't had a non-kobold thief yet, but I have had a couple (previously quite rare/nonexistent) goblin snatcher sightings, though.

I'm new to succession forts in general, yes, but do all forts designed by multiple overseers inevitably degenerate into a body-filled labyrinth of chaos and despair like this? Or is this just a Battlefailed thing?

There isn't much middle ground between killed-by-dragon and never-seen-by-dragon.

Woah, you got your babysitters to come back? I haven't seen one in forever.

I've seen a small number of goblin baby snatchers in 0.43.05, but they came together with sieges, so there was a rather obvious reason to try to get the wee ones indoors (as they have a tendency to start playing on the battle field from the last siege after having picked up a new set of blood soaked underwear).

If the nearest site is too small, wipe them off the map.

Also, if you ever figure out why poets/bards/dancers just randomly start butchering people/getting butchered, please don't fix it, I love never knowing when a dance party will turn into a slaughter.

Have you tried sending raiders against people so they will go to war against you?

Seems a bit of a dodgy way to attract sieges. Yeah, you'll provoke a war with them, and sure they'll ignore your siege triggers, but if there's no-one nearby, they're more likely to attack your neighbours than you. Civs unfortunately declare war on each other, not your individual site.

If you have large human, elf and (other civ) dwarf sites nearby, then yeah it's probably worth a shot.

I saw one in 42.06 in like my third embark early on, but yeah they seem to be somehow rare.

I'm not sure if this is viable, but I had a bunch of consecutive snatchers come to my fort when I was situated between a tree-hugger preserve and a goblin fortress in 43.xx
