Yeah, 41 citizens and 191 guests.

I wonder what the factors are...

I topped out at about 180-some visitors after about 2 years.  They then quit coming and eventually started leaving over the next year.  Down to just under 100 now.

Now I feel better about my 45ish elven visitors in the first year. They seemed to start leaving a few months after I actually set up a proper tavern, so maybe they're getting stuck because they can't "Socialize"?

They came to have fun. They won't leave until they have fun. That's how I interpret their behaviour.

7 days after embarking I have a scholar already visiting. I have dug out some initial areas and I have a wagon. That is it. How did this guy even know about my new fortress? Heck, I don't even want to call it a fortress yet. Really it is just a hole in the ground.

This guy must have stalked my 7 dwarves as they made their way here. Just a tad creepy.

I've had visitors show up soon after any "location" has been designated. If you designate a library, that will attract scholars even without having any literary material. In the current version, I have a library designated but no visitors yet (and a few metric fucktons of dwarves hanging around in there).

Given current events, I've altered my profile pic and I'm sorry it took so long to fix. If you find the old one on any of my accounts elsewhere on the internet, let me know by message (along with the specific site) and I'll fix. Can't link the revised avatar for some reason.

Sometimes when you embark a fortress there were people already there and the game refers to them as visitors.

Three years in, I still haven't made a single "location". The elves clustered around my wagon at first, but when I made a meeting place - not a "location", just a two-by-three meeting area - they moved from the wagon to that. This is not a phenomenon I remember from the last version.

The solution is simple.  Build magma-safe tables, put them in a deep room, and designate it as "visitor tavern".  Be sure to put in a drain.  Every so often, lock the door and run the cleaning cycle.  Open the drain, clear out the magma, and voila!  Everything is nice and sparkly clean again for the next set of useless layabouts elven guests.

I'm new to succession forts in general, yes, but do all forts designed by multiple overseers inevitably degenerate into a body-filled labyrinth of chaos and despair like this? Or is this just a Battlefailed thing?

There isn't much middle ground between killed-by-dragon and never-seen-by-dragon.

My fort in the first month of its existence hit the cap of visitors (100) before I could get anything substantial set up... I had to pause a project I was working on (A giant dug out spire going down ~50 levels that would serve as the central artery for my fort in the future) in order to build a large Tavern on the surface. It was 5x25x25...

It is absurd.

I hit about 250 in year 8.  They were 3 deep per square in the tavern.

My military was top notch by then, so I just designated the entire tavern with a kill order.

What a bloodbath.  While the massacre ensued, more happily arrived, along with performers and troupes and such.  I gathered so many codices and other artifacts that they just kept brining with them.

Something certainly needs to be done about it.
