Wars aren't won through defense. We also have a very unique opportunity to maximize the potential of two new pieces of equipment. We'd be insane not to take it.

Er, did you read the spoiler? "Iron Stance" is meant to be fake as hell, it's the bait for an enormous trap. It isn't a defensive move.

Nope. I didn't read it because I had thought it wasn't necessary. It's literally just labeled as notes from the BEO, which is not us, so I assumed that the plan you had posted in a thread only this team would see would be the plan and the spoiler was fluff and not a modification of the proposed orders.

It's still defensive, since the focus is on holding the desert/mountain border. The only effort we put to the plains is having our Sols start brushfires. There's also this about firestorms:

"A firestorm is characterized by strong to gale-force winds blowing toward the fire, everywhere around the fire perimeter, an effect which is caused by the buoyancy of the rising column of hot gases over the intense mass fire, drawing in cool air from the periphery. These winds from the perimeter blow the fire brands into the burning area and tend to cool the unignited fuel outside the fire area so that ignition of material outside the periphery by radiated heat and fire embers is more difficult, thus limiting fire spread. At Hiroshima, this inrushing to feed the fire is said to have prevented the firestorm perimeter from expanding, and thus the firestorm was confined to the area of the city damaged by the blast." - The Almighty Wikipedia

I also can't parse an Investigation Action in the plan, unless it's literally just "lie to the Oracle".

Yeah... I'm also supposed to rewrite the spoiler stuff due to  stepping on waffles' feet.

I'm not sure what the difference between Alpha Strike and Iron Stance's take on the desert/mountains is supposed to be. They allocate the same resources, and it's not like we can choose not to attempt to retake territory in the mountains. We'll be pushing if we win either way. We don't normally get to pick battle tactics, just superweapon deployment.

Firestorm thing is super legit, I'll also change the description to fix that.

Combat Report: Summer 1965

The best kind of explosions happened this past season.
Our explosions.

Intrigue
Quote
But we do, so for our Investigation Action we will not attempt to outmaneuver the BEO, and instead double down on our own efforts to study the Astral. All Black Chamber resources will be directed to studying what happens during the bombing run through the Astral Realm. The introduction of the Beacon Bomb coincided with a strange fluctuation in the Astral Realm, and so teams will be assigned to observing a number of objectives
...
We will also have a small team sent out to observe (from a distance) the bombardment and report every detail, highlighting anything unusual. They are included on the list of teams observed.

The Beacon Bomb? Great success. Our data gathered from it? Well.
It's complicated.

We don't think it actually has much to do with the "stretching" thing described by some before. And we found some interesting bits of data but it doesn't line up with our original testing of the prototype Beacon Bomb or just what we know about it. It seems like a fluke. The Astral Realm sure does love throwing wrenches into our investigations. But we'll survive.

The fluke in question is a pattern. Most things in the Astral are. This pattern, however, was either undetectable or didn't exist prior to the bombing. As we only had the observations of a few Guardians and so on to go off of, we don't know the exact time it appeared or how it appeared. Just that it appeared. Patterns exist and disappear all the time, like ripples, but this one is strangely persistent. And no, it's not the "8" pattern we looked into before.

Other observations do point that the Astral is affected by the Beacon Bomb. Just not in the way we were hoping(?) to find. The changes can't be described conventionally, but as far as we can tell it's not much of a departure from what we already know. The Astral reflects the real world, after all.

Here's some ideeorz:

Light Plasma Rifle "Petrel"

The Petrel takes the rapid-fire plasma cannon mechanisms of the Sol Invictus and condenses them into an infantry-tier firearm. The Petrel fires globs of contained plasma through a recombinated ceramo-metal barrel containing a trio of recombinated magnetic rails as opposed to the beams fired by the Albatross. A dense SynthOil cell can be inserted into the base of the stock to provide the juice necessary to fuel the weapon, with the rear weight counterbalanced by the cooling system and radiator along the barrel to prevent warping and overheating. While the gun may still overheat under sustained fire, a button on the weapon opens up forward-facing vents and flushes air through the system with a small, strong internal fan, briefly superheating the air in front of the Petrel and allowing the user to continue firing. A holographic sight and small, basic Identification/Targeting system similar to that used in the STOP allows more accurate fire at targets, but can be removed should the shooter prefer classic iron sights.

Shadowgate Arrays

Mereth has irresponsibly dabbled with the Astral Realm, forcing their machines into it and bringing about a near-cataclysm. Indeed, since they interfered in the realm we've so carefully navigated, the world has seemed...uncertain, at best. The disappearance of people, places, and things inexplicably piqued the interest of researchers in The Black Chamber. While studies into teleportation had been ongoing since it's inception, it wasn't until recently that any significant breakthrough was made.

Shadowgate Arrays are one-way travel systems. They're made of a large metal ring stood vertically on a flat platform hooked up to a CryoStat tank and linked directly to a strong Wadjet-branded Astralpath within it. The Astralpath is given coordinates to focus on as they enter an astraltrance, which transmits a level of their psychic energy through the machine, and translates the instructions given to the Astralpath to instructions for the Array. Conventional power is provided to the ring itself as well, and in conjunction with the Astralpath opens up a "window" through the Astral.

While there was some worry of tearing through the Astral itself, the Shadowgate is more akin to theorized "wormholes", where two locations are linked through material space without disturbing space itself. The Shadowgate Array manipulates the pinprick of realspace disturbance caused by the Astralpath and expands it to the dimensions of the containment ring. The portal can be viewed through, and in fact primary testing utilized it solely for this purpose. Solid objects were eventually tested and successfully passed through the Shadowgate. Once on the other side, subjects and observers noted that the portal was not visible from the other end as anything more than a ripple in the air, as a mirage in the desert.

Object Reception And Transmission Identifier Orbital Network

ORATION is Aratam's step into a global communications and positioning system. They are a set of satellites that passively scan for actively transmitted non-Aratamite signals, identifying their point of origin and transmitting said information to the interconnected network to be used with our military equipment and replacing their outdated means of target identification (that is, using their eyeballs). These satellites also provide Aratam with the ability to rapidly and wirelessly communicate without relying on old war radios. The system is heavily encrypted in an effort to prevent unwanted entities gaining access to the system.

A less powerful, less effective public network not connected to the military system is also created to provide civilians with wireless communication through phones and some of the newly created, very expensive, and very rare civilian computers. ORATION's true nature is kept hidden from the public eye, and touted as Aratam's next great step in the unification of humankind - and will hopefully make Mereth think twice about targeting the satellites lest they piss off a bunch of people.

----------------

Goals for the designs:

The Petrel aims to provide an increase in suppressive ability for our infantry.
The Shadowgate Arrays may give us a good bit of flexibility in combat - and perhaps the ability to go to the moon without dedicated spacecraft, meaning we can focus our space efforts on more combat-oriented designs. Possibly the best of the three options in terms of action economy if we want to eventually into space without throwing out a design just to get us to the moon without further benefit.
ORATION seeks to solve the biggest issues our more advanced equipment has been touted to have in damn near every combat report - poor identification and communications capability.

Quote from: XE FILE INTAKE (UNION);
SB-UNION-7 Hunter-Killer
Star Bound-Ultra Nucleosynthetic Ionic Orbitally Navigating Hunter Killeris a large space-faring vessel consisting of Cargo/bomb Bay, Thrust equipment, Crew & communication Systems, and fuel storage. It is not aerodynamic and is not designed to operate the atmosphere. While it is designated as a Hunter-Killer craft, it’s massive fuel stocks could be used towards moving large amounts of lunar bound goods and equipment at slightly less than ludicrous speeds compared to combat missions at Luna.

UNION is designed to use a next-generation reaction that does away with psuedo-fusion reactions that we have come to rely upon. The Gel-Matrix reaction is discarded for a new reaction that entirely relies upon the synthesis and prompt destruction of esoteric chemical materials that result in very tiny magnetic “bubbles” where the temperature reaches a hundred million degrees. These bubbles are the sites where fusion reactions occur for a billionth of a second before the thermal energy surpasses the incredible pressure the magnetic field creates, and detonates, resulting in plasma ready for thrusting or power generation as is used in GM-BP engines. The fuel required is both lighter, and more voluminous than the GM-BP fuel systems as high-volume fuel injectors create the pressure required for the first stage of reactions instead of a denser less efficient fuel gelly. This allows for an incredibly high Thrust and Power to Weight Ratios required for evading, outmaneuvering, and destroying enemy spacecraft. Designed with maximum energy efficiency in mind, it is theorized that this engine could be repurposed into the slow-burning reactor that sends us to other worlds beyond the moon. It is single-handedly the most expensive part of the craft by a significant margin, each one represents a monument to the stars, and our ingenuity as a nation, and as a species.

The main weapon is integrated with the reactor, with several mounted hardpoints welded into the system for stability and coherent plasma harvesting at a safe and effective manner.  Should the SB-UNION-7 be tasked for civilian missions, the weapons 12 barrels are stripped as well as the heaviest sub-systems, allowing for additional cargo to be shipped instead of gun. The main weapon has all the hallmarks of a Boeing Aircraft released concept and science fiction art depicting an air-craft mounted rotary plasma delivery system stolen by an engineering committee who cooked their brains on blow and never came back from the run-away all-expenses-paid vacation to the techno-dome.

The main weapon is a 12-barreled electrically cycled plasma accelerator cannon, designed to fire over twelve thousand bolts of helically shaped and magnetically self-contained plasma a minute without stopping until either the reactor runs out of plasma to give. Its primary targets are moon bases, errant enemy spacecraft, and massive lunar industrial cargo barges. This is designed to eliminate the enemies' superior missile technology: the missiles will be impacted by a plasma bolt and detonate long before it reaches its target. Because of this, It is both a pursuit predator and a close support craft.

With no consecrations or regard for aerodynamics, massive antenna and sensor dishes dot the craft, The craft is not subtle in the slightest, and its active sensors are theorized to be able to give every SETI disk on its side of the planet a hell of a fright. If the pilot deems it necessary, active sensors will pierce the veil of the void and reveal both the enemy craft being engaged as well as expose its exact location. Otherwise, the cockpit of the craft resembles that of the Invictus, only with additional resources to handle the days required to make a hell-burn towards the moon, deliver fire or goods at the enemy or the moon respectively, and get home for refueling.

The UNION has two cargo configurations in the interior of its hull: It can contain either only fuel, or it can contain fuel plus the supplies required to bring goods to low Lunar orbit: it cannot land and it is not designed to land on the moon, but it can carry things to drop on the moon.

In summary, it is first and foremost a space-bound craft for murdering uppity military craft as well as pursuing spacecraft and murdering them too. The main gun can also be used against production targets such as Magmatite mines.

Quote from: XE FILE INTAKE (PROPHET);
Prophets
There are a fair few cases where Aratam Soldiers are too wounded to continue duty in time to make a difference in the war, as a few months or even a year could mean that Aratams light is extinguished by foreign incursions.

Prophets are an alteration of the standard treatment by invoking a massive radiance of astral emergence onto a person while being treated for wounds that have caused severe enough to normally require drastic chemical alterations to account for the possibility of severe brain damage to the person.

The end result are wiry, dangerous, and absolutely inhumanly strong specimens with a unique ability:

They see connections, the little blurs in our reality that constantly form and disassemble in the moment. This is the cutting edge, the blur between reality and the side-lines, where a person can fold themselves up and end up somewhere else.

To a sensible, rational view, the Prophet exits realtime and traditional space for a brief moment, and end up somewhere else. Usually, they end up close enough to where they wanted to go by traversing the side-lines that they can effectively teleport across space into superior positions.

Where Bio-forged are elite super soldiers and SEEM are the rank and file special forces, “Prophets” are the few with the vision to be just awakened enough to be a boogie man in the night for the Merethian surveillance state. In cooperation with the other special forces branches, a group of Prophets could be guided to a camp and exterminate enemy forces with reckless abandon as they're inhuman strength allows them to win close quarter battles against determined foes with ease.

Their marriage with forces beyond understanding means they are extremely hard to predict through the set of physics and predictive analyzation that assume action will cause a reaction: in other words, Merethian Sensors and predictive analytical engines that rely on ontological continuity will not function well against the abilities of Prophets.

We cannot stress how strange it is to see a Prophet enter or exit reality. Variations in the stresses of reality mean that they can enter through a wide variety of ways that change visually. The most common way that a Prophet reenters reality si by fading in from thin air, but sometimes they can enter from doors that don't exist, drop from the ceiling or emerge from the floor as if they were coming up a set of stairs, and everything in between.

Exiting is far more traumatic to the senses, and most of the time it may seem that a Prophet may die in an inhuman way that leaves no trace (crushed by invisible boulders, eaten by the ground, crushed by a wall that falls and stands up as if nothing happened) or merely folds inwards like some sort of demented origami paper. Mercifully, they sometimes fade out or enter doors that don't exist as well.

This process requires a wounded soldier, a severely wounded one at that. A soldier with a wound has an altered astral presence, and this altered presence sings with the wounds that our reality has and the changing of times. By exaggerating this presence through psychotherapy and physical treatments, their body can be made to reflect their presence, and be married once more as a cohesive agent: an agent of change, and of wounds un-infested with decay.

NULLGLASS
NullGlass is a fabricated hunk of glass formed into tiny pellets as small as the tip of a sewing needle and combined with the plastic material that is vaporized and shot out of a modified Albatross Rifle. The glass beads are kept in containment by the beam of plasma and shatter once the conduction pockets detonate, resulting in a potent astral emission that is designed to kill human life in a radius around it by damaging their astral presence. They do this by pushing the delicate bundle of energies in the astral realm out of place, such that it is yanked out of their mortal coil or jarred enough that they will need recovery time.
NullGlass is formed by astral technicians focussing on creating tiny windows into and form the astral dimension, such that when they collapse, the link between reality is transferred into the locus of these glass chunks, and are “filled” by the technicians with the specific energy emission required to mangle astral presences when the physical structure containing these windows breaks. This is not a material property, but a metaphysical property of the glass, its existence is blurred with that of the portal and thus it retains the property of being a link between reality. The glass chunks are reformed by traditional cold-forming techniques to create these tiny beads, and they are ready for use.
Visually, un-refined chunks of null-glass are windows, as if you were viewing the sky filled with stars, which change based on where you are viewing it from to display different parts of the exotic constellations. While they do form a  coherent “sphere” of star maps, they match no known structures viewable from Earth, and each batch has a different star map with different compositions. Scientific equipment observe a normal piece of glass, thus summarizing that NullGLass is an entirely astral anomaly being wholly alien to our world, and dizzyingly confusing to our best and brightest
------------------------
copying MOP structure, my designs are as follows:
UNION:     A space supremacy craft designed to prevent Nereth from taking advantage of their moon bases (by hosing it in the plasma fire
Prophets:  Even spookier special forces with a flavor of unknown to them.
NullGlass: An anti-armor aspect to our infantry guns.

Design: Object Reception And Transmission Identifier Orbital Network (ORATION)
(Normal) (1+2) = 3: Buggy Mess

It turns out wireless communication satellites are hard! It helps a lot that we have ANGEL to work with but unfortunately for us it doesn't do the actual design bits.

ORATION consists of several Orator (no, we did not make this name an acronym because we are not filthy Merethans) satellites fairly similar to the STOP in design. Unfortunately, each satellite needs to be manned as we did and do not have the technology to automate spacecraft. Plasma maneuvering thrusters are present, as in the STOP. The bulk of the satellite is the heaviest radio equipment we could find, with most of the remaining space dedicated to life support for the single required crew-member operator. The operator receives signals via the radio and communicates with our ground presence directly with the output radio transmissions. Communication between different Orators is easily possible as long as they're not in very different parts of orbit.

Importantly, the operator must use their judgement to evaluate incoming communications. All transmissions outwards are (encrypted) spoken word from the operator. Operators from different Orators must coordinate with each other to triangulate positions of Merethan entities, determine what transmissions are Merethan and what Merethan transmissions should be focused on, while also serving as the medium required for intra-Aratamite communication. This puts a huge restriction on effective bandwidth *and* speed as not only must the transmissions go between an Orator and the ground but they also need to be processed by the human first.

We wouldn't have a proper design report without bringing up the Astral. So let's do that. It sucks.
Specifically, it sucks. Seriously. It has been a huge annoyance and source of frustration throughout this project. The number 8 especially. Particularly Astral-sensitive people on the ground unconsciously embed this number in any current activity; while they don't realize this and can't independently point out 8 as the culprit, asking leading questions often has them... remembering it? It's strange. Now, this is annoying (and considering what we know about Mereth's messing with the Astral, they'll probably notice this too) but by itself fine.

The increasingly strange and surreal 8-pattern doesn't stop here, oh no. It's in our goddamn transmissions. Often as an identifiable pattern, like repeating bumps in frequency/amplitude or clicks/beeps or talking. Our first few attempts at encryption had to be aborted as the 8-pattern wrecked havoc with them. Now, operators still report extreme frequency of this pattern (appearing to go up and down in influence arbitrarily over time) but at least it's technically possible to understand received signals. The pattern still becomes strong enough occasionally to effectively disable communications over the period of several days. Usually every 2-3 weeks. The pattern's influence isn't actually all that pervasive by itself. Concluding purely from data coincidentally gathered during the project, we believe it "hops onto" the transmissions and effectively gets amplified through the radio waves.

Also relevant to the continued screwery the Astral is inflicting on this project is the fact that we cannot assign any Astral-exploiting person to duty in an Orator platform. It's not just the pattern that gets to them, but everything. For whatever reason, when in an Orator, Astrally-inclined individuals effectively experience an overload. Extreme headaches is the most minor of symptoms, which quickly progress to unconscioussness or babbling nonsense. Guardians seemed to fare slightly better, but still worse than regular humans. Perhaps people could be trained (not even that intensely) to withstand or exploit this, but that's not in the scope of the ORATION project.

Range is an issue as well. Orators are really really high up as they're deployed from the geostationary ANGEL station and any non-geosynchronous orbit would introduce too much risk with limited life support. Only strong transmissions can reach and be understood by ORATION. We developed a backpack radio capable of rarely reaching ORATION, capable of being used as one person's primary piece of gear. Interestingly, a few SEEMs and Guardians can much more (but not extremely) reliably reach ORATION with the backpack radio. Much larger permanent radio installations can fairly reliable communicate with ORATION. Merethan transmissions are already strong so it's less of a problem there, but we still won't reliably detect anything Merethan not already solidly in space.

An Orator platform as said is mostly occupied by life support and its radio. The operator sits in an extremely cramped space that's effectively a combination bed-chair with the walls packed to the brim with storage space, the airlock (which is only one door; it can keep the atmosphere in but shouldn't ever be opened in space unless you like explosive decompression), and the gear needed to work the satellite. The plasma thrusters allow for a bit less range of movement compared to STOP platforms as Orators actually have more mass. A single GM-BP Reactor lies embedded in the hull powering the whole thing. As mentioned, an Orator is bigger than a STOP. We need more life support (even with one person) to get a longer operational lifetime, and a big radio.
Deployments of Orators are expected to be about a week-long, with life support going up to 10 days before completely running out.

ORATION as a whole costs 4 Ore and 1 Oil, making it Expensive. While ORATION is fairly similar to infrastructure, the cost determines how many satellites we can afford to put in the network which does affect things.
It... can be useful, but that'll be a hard task for it as it stands. However, we've learned a lot about this and are eager to take a new approach. Just need to figure out how the Astral playes into all this.
