The Nekohlin Leader once again sits down at his desk. He just received quite a bit of information, and not very much of it was good news.
First order of business was the blight as usual. Based on the reports he requested previously, the Nekohlin Leader estimated that it was about twice as bad as it was at the time he came into power. To say this was alarming was an understatement. The time had come to put his political skills to the ultimate test. As of now, he would declare the "Blight of the Land" an International Crisis. A solution was needed, and it had to be discovered sooner rather than later.
An envoy would be sent to every developed nation on the continent, detailing the reasoning behind this declaration and requesting the presence of the leaders and the greatest researchers at the Nekohlin capital to discuss the crisis. A Nekohlin military escort would be sent with each messenger to Iomeer, Ertane, the Yinglet Enclaves, and even the Ijzervolk! To highlight how serious he was about this meeting, some highly expensive gifts would be sent alongside the invitations. A date would be specified for the meeting based on the estimated time that the necessary travel arrangements would take.
... For the Ijzervolk, what would be accepted as a "Reasonable Escort" would be clearly defined in the letter. The Nekohlin would not be caught off guard should they see this as an opportunity to attack.
In the meantime, research would be continued locally. The consistency of the blights effects implied that it was actually malicious in nature and not a random occurrence. If this was the case then magic would probably be a big part of how it works. The mages would be instructed to create a "Dead Zone" at one of the farmlands. This "Dead Zone" was basically an area where the ambient magical energies were drained as much as possible. If the blight is a magical event then this should ideally reduce its impact. Should it provide positive results, a few Dead Zones should also be set up as a dedicated place for childbirth to take place at.
While the hydroponic idea was not sufficient for large scale farming, the Nekohlin Leader put in a work order to construct a large amount of related equipment, and would encourage citizens to tend to a small hydroponic garden at their place of residence. The insect ranch would receive a modest expansion, as the "Normal voracity" of an insect was probably far in excess of what would be needed or even desired.
Next order of business: The Yinglets. One of the few pieces of good news that came to the desk. For the time being the traders would be instructed to trade bad food for approximately half of its weight in good food to the Yinglets. He would also request a couple of experienced farmers to give the Yinglets some advice. For this deal to work in the long term it was important that the Yinglets realized that it is better to grow food that the Nekohlin can eat than it is to accept failed crops. The food testers would be kept on payroll for the time being. Work would be ordered to begin on a "Premium Yinglet Snack" consisting primarily of low quality food related objects, but with odd coloration and trace amounts of strong spices or seafood mixed in to disguise what they actually are made of. The Yinglets preferred food size, shape and texture would also be investigated.
On a related note, a token effort would be made to acquire a female specimen of the Yinglets for the purpose of investigating the miscarriage phenomenon, as only so much progress would be made using the male ones. Aware that the Yinglets were highly protective of their women. The idea of an entirely female team of researchers working on site at the Enclave would be suggested.
Then there was the matter of the dragon. If the dragon is willing to share information, then it stands to reason that we should be willing to help, even if that risks making another dragon... Unhappy. The first thing that should be done, is asking the Fire dragon for any information he can provide us regarding the dragon that they want to find so that we actually know what to look for. We will then inform him about what we can do to help him out. The three things that come to mind would be checking our historical documents to identify trends that may coincide with the actions of a specific dragon, we can send out patrols to search an area near where they suspect that a dragon might be, we can have our mages attempt to divine the dragon's location, or if the dragon provides us with particularly useful information we can set up a "Dragon Lure" consisting of gold and jewels from our treasury. It is to be made clear that we cannot promise to success if the dragon does not want to be found. After that is established, we will let the dragon decide how they want to do the tracking.
The Nekohlin Leader then realizes that the map he commissioned was finally completed! He looks over it for a while, and compares it to the previous Iomeeran map. One thing in particular really stood out to him. The forest just north of the Nekohlin lands! This entire forest did not show up on the Iomeeran map! For a moment he thought that maybe they didn't map out the area due to Ijzervolk presence in the north, but they didn't have any trouble finding the other forests that were even closer. What this probably meant then, is that the forest simply did not exist for very long! Could the appearance of this forest possibly be predated by the blight? If so, then it suddenly became a place of immense interest. Several scouting parties would be sent to investigate it right away, and a few mages would be instructed to track the scouting parties via magic.
And lastly... The Nekohlin leader would ask someone to come up with a better name for a non-magical area than "Dead Zone". The name didn't particularly sound like a place where someone might feel safe at.
