Civilian Design - Eagle Drones

These delivery drones revitalized the internet market - They deliver whatever you ordered, right to you, anywhere. Give an area or allow tracking on your phone and it'll navigate to you by itself. The onboard cameras even let the drone pick an individual out of a crowd, should it be neccessary. It's 8 propellers let it lift up to 25 kg of cargo and fly at 80 kmh. Thanks to civilian uses of the NQ Cells, these can stay in the air for hours at a time and can be recharged in small recharge stations that are easily man portable should they need to be moved.

----------

Not my best, most likely. I was distracted while writing and I'm lazy to rethink it.

Civilian Design: Quantum Gravity
North Clan Enterprises's "Unveiling of New Product" convention, held in a large auditorium-scraper bundled amongst the North Clan's other holdings.

"Welcome, people of the Triumvirate, to North Clan's unveiling of the future! My name - as I'm sure you all know - is Blake North, and I'll be your host tonight! Welcome everyone to the North Auditorium in the center of the beautiful North Clan complex, and greeting to everyone watching from home! And special welcome to the Consul of Innovation, sitting in the front row with us tonight."

"I must say, I'm really quite proud of what we're about to show you. A secret project in the works for many years in cooperation with the Consul of Innovation's Design Bureau. Something that I believe will change everyone's lives. But I didn't invite any of you to just talk about our new product with no payoff. I would say 'let's get right to it', but there's something I have to show you first."

A large extravagant holoprojection comes to live in the space between Blake and the audience. What appears to be a complicated technical diagram appears in the middle, with a large number of miscellaneous calculations rapidly scrolling around it. It fades away after a handful of seconds, with a single equation taking its place.

"The theory of Quantum Gravity. You're looking at it."
"I would explain it, but I don't want to steal the thunder of our amazing staff that worked on this. I introduce to you our chief Scientist in this project, Praclum North."

A tall bald man dressed in a simple yet striking suit walks out from behind the backstage, replacing Blake.

"I'm sure you've all heard my introduction, and I don't want to waste any time."
"For what I hope is an understandable reason, we can't release the majority of our work behind the theory to the public. Only the North Clan, the Consul of Innovation and partners are allowed to know; Quillus would probably find a way to make sixteen-times reinforced armor if we let them know about this!"

The audience laughs.

"Anyways - the Theory of Quantum Gravity has been something eluding mankind since today. Before, researchers could never really understand how gravity really worked. At least, not at the level we understood other fundamental forces to work. Quantum physics could be used to explain the other fundamental forces, but not gravity. But thanks to North Clan Enterprises, we can now finally understand."
"The Graviton has been long theorized but we now not only know how to study and locate it, but how to manipulate it."
"We can control gravity."

Praclum walks out the way he came in, being replaced by Blake North. As they switch places, the hologram in the center switches from the prior supposed theory of Quantum Gravity to some kind of device.

"Thank you, Praclum! But, as all our customers understand: we don't innovate just to innovate; we innovate to change Aljadid."

"Introducing the NCE-GMD104, also known as the 'Horme Drive'. Using our new understanding of reality, we made something never made before. The Graviton Manipulation Drive."
"Once set up, it's able to manipulate gravity around a select area. There are far too many uses for this to count, but we're already organizing partnerships with other entitites to develop new GMD104-using products within the coming years. We're in talks to create an antigrav road, using distributed GMD104 emitters to create a thin field, allowing for extremely cheap airborne vehicles as a radically lower amount of money goes to creating the engine. A new containment measure is being developed, using the GMD104 to safely contain anything - including materials as exotic as antimatter. A joint project with the Consul of Innovation is even exploring the potential of gravity "thrusters" for ships."

As Blake talks, the hologram is rapidly inundanted with concepts and examples of the projects he mentions.

"How about cargo transport? If you can literally lighten your load, then just imagine how much freight you could ship! Want your coffee floated to you from your coffee maker? No problem! How about factories? Gravity manipulation can renovate the way your factory moves its goods throughout itself, and it can renovate the way you fundamentally make your goods!"
"What about optics? By using gravity manipulation, we'll obsolete mirrors and lenses."

"We're also proud to announce GravityKids, a set of child-friendly toys and activities using gravity! How about an anti-gravity swing?  An anti-gravity slide?  A zero-G 'pool'?"

"Actually, on that note, we're already beginning construction of the Gravity Dome, where North Clan will sponsor new and exciting sports, entirely in zero-G! We will have affordable ticket prices and plenty of seating for an original Ertexite sport!"

He goes on for a while before eventually stopping.

"...and the list goes on. Production on many of these products have already started, and we're already accepting bids for teams in the Gravity Dome. A great many of contracts - lucrative for the public and North Clan - are already being drawn up as we speak."

"The GMD104, thanks to the North Clan, will change Ertex and the Triumvirate for the better. Though we are in many talks to incorporate the GMD104 in other products as mentioned, the release of the GMD104 for practical use is not currently scheduled, though we predict it will be available in one to two years."

"Thank you."

The audience gasps as Blake actually floats out of view, seemingly via gravity manipulation.

((TL;DR: Quantum Gravity with the goal of graviton manipulation. Despite the mentions of the GMD104, this is still a theoretical design - if it were to be done, then the GMD104 would initially be a proof of concept for manipulating gravitons, to be improved upon in the near future.))

EDIT: Updated votebox. Since the engineer voting has zero influence, I removed it. I'm going to wait to see if NUKE does just the civ design first before doing any stuff with military designs.

A Consul speaks in a direct speech to the people of Ertex through various Media channels about the Seven Little Dwarves Project,
"Each city, each community, every company, every businessman, any group of People trying to organize can Profit from the Seven Little Dwarves AI programm. See, Athena has achieved so much for us but her nature of code is of the essence of war. If we take our knowledge of AI and apply the learned principles onto our economy and write AIs who can respond to these parameters, people will quickly work more efficiently due to management of our programs, if they are as enthusiastic as I am. Each individual Dwarve AI works to protect the entity it represents, be it social justice league or company. A decentralized system like this ensures safety for all and furthermore it allows many different views on highly chaotic systems like lets say the food supply sector. By employing AI at the markets but also at the farms we ensure that the farmers work to their highest efficiency. Furthermore the AI of the market can inform the farmers about demand on a regular basis.

If a business complex employs a security AI, the A I will have much time to develop defence plans for the complex and only concentrate on that. By having individual AIs we ensure that the individials are protected enough. Furthermore we plan on making the Dwarves, as we call them, loyal to athena. Athena will gain mission giving rights. She can apoint military relevant missions to individual companies. These could be industrial or recruitment missions but who knows. Of course one must not reply to sucb a mission, this is in the fate of the businessman, but the government pays well.

On a defense point of view I must call to attention that a centralized AI project like some suggested is very risky. A clever terrorist could easily enter the system and attack key points. If we instead take many AIs to regulate busoness we ensurea system that is easily defendable. Thank You."

Athena is already completely decentralized, yes, and works on any scale. The best comparison would be like if you had a hivemind without any queen-type figure? Each individual (Athena Node - the ones on our Sarissa missiles and Cuttlefishes) computer hosting Athena is individually Athena. But when these computers are able to communicate with each other, they act as one program using >1 computer rather than >1 programs communicating.
So, for instance, if we had Athena Civilian Edition then each - say - "house mainframe" would be Athena. But as they're all within communications range of each other, it means they all make up the singular Athena.

One of the main advantages unique to this method (in addition to it being what we're already doing and thus easier) is that it offers perfect coordination. "One" AI controlling everything is able to make everything work together in perfect harmony. A single human would be much better at using two hands and 10 fingers to perform any task using natural coordination at the task, than two humans each using one hand (or even two each) trying to do the same thing via talking with each other.

Furthermore, I don't see the point of disliking Athena for security reasons:
1.) Nuke isn't going to arbitrarily punish us for using a certain brand of AI. In OOC terms, chances are that the only way we could ever be hurt by compromising on security (which we're not by the way - Athena communications are securely encrypted) is if Quillus very specifically spends a design trying to do so. And even then it would never be a hard counter.
2.) As Athena is decentralized currently, you can't subvert the entire network at once. You'd have to be really clever and somehow force an individual node to upload infected code (reminder that if individual nodes could ever upload code, it'd be because Athena modifies her own code as a part of learning, which means that it'd be indecipherable to humans) to the entire network. That'd be impossible unless Athena, unknown to us, operates in a very specific way. And if she does, then it'll still be really hard.
The only practical way to subvert the current Athena is to do it individually. You'd have to manually subvert each node in order to get the network to actually become subverted as a whole.
3.) Using the logic that numerous people have used to criticize current Athena, their alternatives - a more centralized system with multiple coordinating discrete AIs - would be easier to subvert. With that approach, subverting a single AI subverts that AI and everything it controls. Compared to current Athena, where subverting a node would either do nothing or have to cut it off from the rest of the network (therefore isolating the subversion) to control its own thing in a poor unnetworked manner.

Civilian design: 'Hulk' mobile refinery
Looking somewhat like a bagger 288 and a steelmill had a child, the hulk is at its core an asteroid mining ship, but it is so much more than that. Its an entire production chain, starting with an asteroid in one end and finished metal stock in the other end. The finished metal is then transported to Ertex by orbital tugs.
In the front is a giant bucket wheel excavator and a system of anchors and claws to hold onto an asteroid. After this is a larger refinery adopted to zero g, vacuum smelting. In the back is a Helios-S reactor. Most of the time it provides power for the miner and heating for the refinery, but it also allows it to slowly move to a new asteroid after one is consumed.
Surrounding the front part of the structure is a large pressurized compartment, containing sleeping spaces, offices, workshops and everything else needed to keep the small army of personnel happy and in good health.
The back side is dominated by a series of docking ports, allowing cargo tugs to dock for easy transfer of cargo.

Civilian design: Hercules powered exoskeleton
The Hercules powered exoskeleton is as the name implies a powered exoskeleton. Its marketed towards warehouse workers and anybody else wanting to lift several hundreds of kilos. It consists of a steel frame with a series of electric engines and actuators mounted on. Strong but flexible "Gloves" allows the wearer to actually apply the strength. A bank of NQ-capacitors at the back powers it an entire shift, allowing it to work without a power tether.

I think its highly unrealistic to have one AI controlling everything... Also I think real people would have more of a püroblem with one AI controlling everything instead of having smaller AIs to "aid" them...
Also, nothing against you or your suggestions, but for the past turns your designs have been picked, and I think there is alot of creative writers here who want one of their creations to be our design.

I like your ideas and your designs alot so its not bad for us as a team, but it feels a bit like you are ertex and we are merely voting for your stuff. Again, this is due to your grand abilities and ideas. You write very thorough reports of your designs and you have practical ideas that helps ertex as a whole.

I feel that from an RP perspective people of Ertex would rather have multiple AIs and even the bearucracy would be wary to employ so much power to one entity.

Anyhow, keep up the good writing, I don't wanna block your style (Greetings to M.Z.)

Civilian design: "Caduceus" Compact fusion reactor

Ertex electricity grid has by now been completely converted to fusion energy, resulting in widespread abundance. Thanks to this and nanocapacitors, the transportation infrastructure is almost entirely electrical as well. However, this requires to rely on massive infrastructure and to never stray too far from civilization, which is a surprisingly common occurrence in the mountainous and largely uncolonized and unterraformed Ertex.

This is why the new device presented by the Libium Labs at the yearly fair of Innovation fair: the Caduceus reactor, a new fusion reactor design that thanks to the use of an electromagnetic potential well can confine plasma in a space much lower than is possible with a stellarator or a tokamak. This is inspired by the old Polywell design, made easier thanks to liberal application of a materials technology much ore advanced than what was possible on old Earth, namely the insulanium alloys and almost room temperature superconductors.

The end result is astonishing: While the efficiency of the fusion process isn't much increased, the minimum size of a reactor is now much smaller than it used to be, small enough to power a car! And the electricity generator equipment has had a significant overhaul as well, utilizing the capacity of He-He fusion to generate electricity directly without requiring bulky and less efficient conversion methods. This alone should improve all our existing reactors.

To prove the technology, Libium Labs offered a converted consumer car, rigged to have a Caduceus and an helium tank instead of the traditional batteries, to a well known explorer who will embark on an around the world trip - without a single stop to refill the battery! Footage from this endeavour is predicted to spread news of this new opportunity far and wide over all the planet.

Military design - Nautilus frigate
This is an evolution of the current generation of space fighting vessels, built from the ground up for the realities of space warfare. While the cuttlefish is admirable, after many revisions to its original design, there is only so much that can be done without a full redesign.

Increased protection was a main driver of the design, since the cuttlefish proved to be barely more resilient than its namesake: Hence the name Nautilus, a shelled cephalopode.
Not just the idea of protection, from the marine animal this design gets a vague similarity. The main hull is indeed somewhat disc shaped, with a wide circular aperture behind, in which we house the propulsion system. This allows us to house critical components far inside, where they will have the bulk of the ship to provide protection.

Armor is significantly improved. Instead of bolted insalloy (insulanium alloy, maybe the name catches on?) plates, here it is an integral part of the design, part of the hull itself. The layers are arranged in a stuffed whipple shield configuration: an outer metal hull to fragment projectiles, a middle layer of high strength polymers like kevlar and nextel, and an inner hull to block what is left.

Propulsion is provided by an engine similar to that in use in the cuttlefish, however in this case the reactor is dedicated to propulsion and so can be tailored for the task, hopefully providing significantly greater thrust without having to conciliate contradictory tasks. Furthermore some improvements are dedicated to manoeuvrability.  The main thruster is given more gimbal and secondary thrusters, fed by the same reactor, are pointed sideways to allow rapid turning. Chemical thrusters with high density fuel are still present, scattered around the ship to assist with finer manoeuvres.

With propulsion moved to a dedicated reactor, we electrical power is provided by a second fusion reactor, tasked only with the needs of equipment.

Weapons don't see much change, with the old spear cannons having proved themselves to be effective. However, the number is key. While the cuttlefish could only field 3 guns, a slightly enlarged size and a dedicated power reactor allow us to field 6 of them, doubling our firing power. The flat sides of the main hull are the ideal places to mount those turreted cannons, with attention paid to them not interfering with each other's targeting. (that is, don't make them fire at each other or block large firing angles)

Our first ships was built before we had a military AI, but this time we come prepared. In the deepest part of the hull is a large processor bank forming the main core of Athena, with other smaller processing nodes scattered around the ship to provide redundancy and a distributed architecture. Overall, there is significantly more processing power available than we have in a cuttlefish.

A further detail is added: on the front of the ship there is a large non pressurized compartment that opens to space through a large hinged door. Such a space would allow, in the future, to carry payloads such as drones, missiles, liofilized food and unwanted passengers.

Given our current success of nukes, i shall reintroduce a missile for our navy.

ESC-MND 1 'Smite' casaba missile
In the heart of the Smite missile, is a device known as a casaba howitzer. A 100kg nuclear warhead placed behind a lot of hydrogen. All of this is surrounded by a radiation reflecting case, open in the hydrogen end. When the nuke goes off, all the hydrogen is accelerated to a respectable fraction of c in a very narrow cone. All of this is mounted on a gimbal, allowing it to be pointed in any direction independent of the missile orientation.

Behind this is a two stage rocket. The first one is a solid fuel rocket for the boost phase. Second stage uses hypergolic fuel and powers the rocket during the terminal phase, while at the same time providing fuel for the altitude control system.

In front of the warhead is the electronics. This consists of a set of redundant, radiation hardened computers running an Athena node, a radar for the terminal guidance and a fold out, high gain, radio receiver that allows it to receive course corrections during the coast phase.

The missile is usually delivered in a combined storage container/launch tube, which can either be bolted to the side of a spaceship or left in orbit.

ESN-LF04 "Theseus"
The Theseus represents an actual ship designed for modern warfare. Using all of our experience from the many lessons of the Cuttlefish, we can create something truly devastating.

Its shape is defined by sleek and graceful curves, and ((if no tactical disadvantage)) it's painted a brilliant silver. The Theseus is notably larger than the Cuttlefish, as well. The weapons subtly jut out at specific points. While it doesn't resemble any specific shape, if one was to boil it down to its most basic shape, it'd be vaguely like an oval. But in its actual form, it's its own shape.
Crew requirements are drastically lower than that of the Cuttlefish despite being bigger. As the Theseus is built with Athena in mind, we can properly use Athena. Athena controls most of the ship's functions, decreasing our need for crew. The crew resides in the very center of the ship, in a small set of closely-packed rooms. The insides of these rooms are brightly lit and also painted white for crew morale. The majority of the space formerly used for crew is filled with additional computing power for Athena.

The Theseus is powered and moved via 3 Helios-S reactors and 3 respective Hermes thrusters. All three reactors simply share power loads, but their Hermes thrusters are placed to improve maneuverability. The 1st simply in the back for forward propulsion. The other two in the two back "corners" of the ship, at angles to provide some horizontal thrust. When combined with an electromagnetic gimballing system, this massively helps maneuverability. Whereas the Cuttlefish had to rely on RCS for anything other than "go forwards", the Theseus can use its Hermes thrusters in a far greater number of directions, improving evasive capabilities.

The Theseus is equipped with 8x Spear turrets - proportional to the "3 per reactor" of the Cuttlefish, with one removed just for power security. It comes equipped with mounts for future weapons such as missiles, though those aren't included at the moment. The mounts are simplistic in nature - they're just here so we don't have to modify more than one design no matter how simple that modification is, when we create a space-variant of the Sarissa.
The ship also has some additional sensory equipment networked to Athena. Notably a passive heat sensor, in order to improve our effective range. Especially with the future missiles.

This vessel's most important aspect is its armor. Insalloy, while a huge advancement never seen before - even in Quillus - in terms of armor, it's never been used right in the Cuttlefish and other cases. We actually integrate notable amounts of it into the armor of the Theseus, while also just giving the Theseus a higher proportion of armor to hull than before. The Cuttlefish didn't really have proper armor, per-say - it was mostly just some thin Insalloy plates on a hull similar to that of the ITC. Kind of. The armor is an actual part of the ship, embedded to actually act as armor.
The armor layout uses a whipple shield configuration stolen from another design proposal that uses an outer layer to break any projectiles followed by empty space and an inner hull to prevent the projectile's fragments from doing any damage.

TL;DR: New ship. Bigger than the Cuttlefish. Less crew due to being designed w/ Athena in mind, +more Athena processing power. 3x Helios-S + 3x Hermes w/  two Hermes angled partially outwards (+electromagnetic gimballing) to allow for us to use Hermes thrust in multiple directions, improving maneuverability evasive maneuvering capability. Passive heat sensors. Design focus is an actual substantial Insalloy armoring in a whipple shield configuration.
Shouldn't be difficult (I hope Easy but I tend to be wrong whenever I hope for Easy) - it's almost all just putting together existing components in an actually competent fashion instead of the disaster that was the Cuttlefish.
((This was actually made before Andrea's Nautilus design though I did steal get inspiration from the whipple armor layout.. It's mildly amusing how similar these are though.))

But we should probably focus on the ground for now. We can very easily revise the Sarissa into space-variants to put on our Cuttlefishes, which should help greatly in space. We're barely holding on in terms of ground combat. We have the experience, and we should do it.

Design: EAF-ACD1 "Aegis"
Just as in Greek mythology Athena wielded the Aegis to protect, Ertex's Athena will use Aegis to protect us.

The Automated Combat Drone "Aegis" is a humanoid design - a bit larger than a human, but otherwise resembling one. Its outer "shell" (and some other parts) is constructed out of relatively thin Insalloy actually built into the frame, avoiding the pitfalls of the X100pI. Its lack of more directly-flexible parts mean we don't have to sacrifice protection coverage for mobility. Its head is the least humanoid (though still notably humanoid) thing about it - moreso a bundle of sensors - visual, heat, etc. - shaped to not be too off-putting to the human eye. An Athena node is distributed throughout the entire frame. We thought about the head as the Athena node, but that's an obvious weak spot. We thought about the torso, but that's a big target. So instead, we're simply distributing it out to minimize the chances of catastrophic damage. The thing is powered by NQ Cells distributed along the frame too (but mostly in the center).
It's of course bipedal, the core tech behind it being prior bipedal robot designs before our departure from Earth, some tweaking by ourselves, and Athena managing it.
((Boston Dynamics Atlas for reference. Not actually anything like the more human-like motion aimed for w/ this, but just shows that we already have a lot of old-world knowledge to base this off of, etc.))

The Aegis' Athena node individually is "relatively" intelligent. Involving such dynamic functions such as "continue shooting at what you were shooting at", "don't shoot at friendlies", and "continue walking to where you were supposed to walk before disconnection from the network." Because of the fact that Athena is a networked intelligence, individual Aegis units should be able to tank surprising amounts of damage - even if their Athena node isn't functioning, that doesn't mean it can't receive orders from Athena; a damaged/destroyed node just means it can't properly contribute to the networked intelligence.
So even if you manage to blow a hole through the center of an Aegis, it should still keep functioning if it has enough intact servos to move, an antenna, and any capacitors with charge left. But blowing a hole through it should still be hard given its shell is made using Island Alloy and its not just haphazardly given a couple of I-Alloy plates to hang on itself like the X100-I.

The Aegis has relatively nimble hands. It can pick up and manipulate most general tools, but can't do anything like keyboards, precision tasks, and the like. It's meant to hold guns and maybe pick up other things. It has "ports" and "hooks" and whatnot to attach extra gear to, and its hands can be "plugged" into our equipment - namely Raider rifles - to directly operate them from the Aegis unit's integrated cell. It's equipped with a speaker that has a randomized fairly human-like (still obviously robotic to prevent the auditory uncanny valley) voices in case it needs to coordinate with nearby humans or direct Quillus prisoners and the like. But most coordination with Triumvirate-aligned humans will likely be via Athena directly speaking to individuals via radio.

We're going for Quality over Quantity, here. But that's not to say Quantity is a valid aim of ours. Just less-so than Quality. Aegis units can perfectly coordinate with each other and other Athena equipment (e.g. Sarissa) instantly based on perfect intelligence from the entire Athena network. The units can make expert effective use of armor thanks to the fact that they have no bendy and squishy parts. They're much more durable regardless of armor because they can survive a lot more damage than a human (and have no pain). They can be more agile than humans thanks to not having to wear bulky suits. They can be manufactured at will. They mean less Ertexite lives lost.

TL;DR: A bipedal combat robot controlled by Athena. Numerous sensors in head (for more battlefield-aware Athena), durable + survivable, insalloy shell + basic core "skeleton", NQ Cell powered and, most importantly, cool.
((In terms of difficulty, I'd say Normal (w/ hope for Easy - it has the potential, but I would *never* bet on it being Easy in any case).  It basically has two "new" things: Athena controlling individual bots (helped greatly by Athena Flexibility) and being bipedal (which we're surprisingly currently very well on in real life). If it was just doing these things, it'd probably be Easy, but we also have to put the whole thing together.))

You should really look to the wilderness for your stealth ideas, it has been doing it much longer than you have after all. Take squids for example, that ink trick works pretty well, and in water too! So you just sneak into the dam upsteam, dump several megatons of distressed squid into it, then break the dam. Boom, you suddenly have enough water-proof stealth for a whole city!

Civilian Design
Answering the call for civilian designs, Engineer Edmund Zan saw promise in NQ capacitors and Superconductors in the development of personal electronics. After a week and a half secluded in a  secluded clan-hold, supplied with electricity and electronic parts, a result is produced.

Named the PCD-1 “Meta” ,it is a personal computing device similar to laptops of yore, but it is so much more. Using the advances in electronics developed for our military, it fits a massive computing power inside of it and a battery life measured in weeks, not hours. Yet this computing power is its not its main feature. What truly makes the   special is the software that comes with. Featuring advanced CAD programs, video editing software, word processor and a bank of games and entertainment software. The first among these games is a strange simulator of an often ignored aspect of managing a nation: the designing of arms and technology. Named “Arms Race Simulator System Year 105” it uses the full might of the computer system to simulate a variety of scenarios in both real and fictitious locals. The foremost among these scenarios are two setups. One focusing on two nations known as “Cannala” and “Forenia”, beginning in 1938 and another beginning in 1890 between nations known as “Karikhita” and “Nafuna”. The simulation models almost all possible variables, as well as chance. Running on the Sensei game engine, it allows the player to chose one of three modes. First off, a single player mode where the player decides on all designs. Second, where the player acts in conjunction with automated engineers that supply designs and vote on what is designed. Finally, there is a networked mode where players on multiple devices cooperate in managing a war. A planned expansion to this game includes an mechanics system for magic and two nations known as “Arstotzka” and “Moskurg”.

Tiebreaking in favor of aegis. I'm not saying i don't think the talon is a good idea, but i think it has greater risk of being obsoleted soon.
