Make a zone then make it a meeting area then assign it a location hit "add location"Then do temple, you will be able to pick which god you wish to dedicate it to.

I usually have a set pattern, firstly i dig out a 5x5 minimum floorspace, keep it clear and engrave relevant things i can find in the image finder by inputting the diety's name or something relevant to the sphere.

Then in the middle of the 5 wide back wall, i make a 1x3, boxes on either side & a statue in the middle, then set the temple zone with floorplan. This fufills the job of a basic decorative temple for me, in the next update i might swap out the statue for a holy relic if i can get my hands on one.

My current fort is the first one in a DF version where temples are a thing, so I don't have much experience with them. Anyway, I ignored them, until I saw a dwarf with the yellow arrow meaning distracted. So about the first two years. I then built a general temple and have been building specific ones when I see distracted dwarves. The temples are about 5 x 6 tiles large and have two coffers. I also had engravings carved by the doors of the first two temples, but have forgotten to add those to the later ones.

After the first autumn caravan, I make a generic temple using a table in an empty room, then sometime in the next couple of years, it is upgraded with rows of masterwork deity statues and coffins, so all of the temple traffic is forced to walk by them to pray.

Altar, I'd guess.

I like to make statues of all the gods and install them on different areas of the main aboveground roads along with coffers for instruments.   These basically act as little "wayshrines" ala Morrowind and both keep away cave adaptation and adds a little cultural flair to the fort

Also a handy way to make a dining room, which can then be made into a location. No need to mess with zones.

Yeah, I just developed a habit of linking the temple and tavern locations to a table.

Are there known benefits or detriments to using separate temples for the deities, compared to using a single generic temple? I was wondering if it would effect the likelyhood of dwarfs starting up ritual dances, if it makes them happier, or if cause buggy issues.

I always make my first temple dedicated to whatever trade/wealth deity is present, and make my trade depot integrated into it.

After that I create a generalized temple with a statue of every worshipped deity for my civ (not including megabeasts/local livestock). Deities will then gets dedicated temples based on fortress events.

Oh ok. But a zone requires nothing, while a table requires a workshop, a table and uses up dance floor space for no real benefit. Well, options are always nice I guess.

I have a few RP-related quirks to how I fort-mode, and religion is one of them.

There are several factors to how I choose the dwarf civ my group is part of, and one of them is the gods they worship. I tend to choose civs with a small deity list (six or fewer), and avoid ones that worship gods of death, deformity and disease (unless they interact interestingly with other spheres, ie a god of the sun and death).

Temples are one of the few rooms I go out of my way to make non-square; they're usually oval or teardrop shaped, with the table/altar at the far, fat end. It's also one of the first rooms I designate after the central hallways are laid out, and the first room to get smoothing. This first room is a general worship room, with no specific deity, and will not receive any special engraving. As my fort grows, I add smaller rooms that are connected to this central one, and each is dedicated to a specific deity of my civ's pantheon. These rooms are engraved with images and decorated with statues that fit the appropriate spheres of worship.
