I thought mercury was also a problem when people were (illegally) eating dolphin meat?

Maybe, but dolphins aren't rich in selenium. Again, it's a food chain thing. Dolphins and whales are top food chain predators.

https://www.japantimes.co.jp/news/2009/09/23/national/mercury-danger-in-dolphin-meat/

However, here they note that a bunch of people in some coastal areas are eating whale and dolphin meat with e.g. 15 times the normal limits of mercury in fish. There are whole towns where it's normal. Yet, there are no reports here of widespread negative health effects. However, these population also eat a lot of fish and seaweed, which are rich in selenium, so that could mitigate effects of high mercury exposure.

Quote
Endo’s tests revealed that one Taiji man in his 50s had a mercury level of 67.2 parts per million. The average mercury level of all 50 subjects was 21.6 ppm for the men and 11.9 ppm for the women.

The average level of mercury present in Japanese people as a whole is only 2.55 ppm for men and 1.43 ppm for women, which means Taiji residents had mercury levels about 10 times the national average.

Note however, that this wasn't spurred by any reports of symptoms, merely medical interest as to whether the locals had elevated mercury levels, based on testing of the meat. The local diet hasn't changed in decades if not centuries. Some of these people eat whale meat all the time, so if they're not showing symptoms, any paranoia about tucking into a few cans of tuna a week should be shown for how silly it actually is.

FWIW (anecdote), a guy I know who happens to be one of my country's top 5 foilists switched to veganism a couple years (I guess?) ago, and he does watch his soy intake but otherwise he hasn't taken a hit to his performance.

Have a progress report.

My shoulders do feel better in general after about 3 weeks of focused rear delt training. Bent over single-arm dumbbell raises, dumbbell W raises, lat pulldowns to a lesser extent, and the standing iron cross body weight exercise a couple days a week. I've got a little more definition there now, maybe not some crazy gainz, but I see improvement and more importantly, feel it in my shoulders. Perhaps it's just psychosomatic but they feel less inclined to roll forward. I'll probably keep training my rear delts but shift a little of the focus back to my mid delts. Still no real need to train the front delts, they're still way ahead of the rest of the shoulder muscles.

Fat loss......still going strong! I can now see the bottom of my abs, and my obliques are starting to show. The flesh I have left on me, while there's still some there, it feels kind of thin and elastic as the skin to fat ratio keeps going down. I think I'm under 15% body fat now but it's so hard to tell sometimes. Still have some love handle fat but I left my muffin top behind a while ago. I really need to go buy a scale. Damned curious to know what my weight has done in the last two months.

I estimate that by March I may be in the 10% to 12% body fat range, and I'll have arrived at Shredsville. Hoping so anyways, it's said the last few % of body fat can be stubborn to get rid of. But I'm so excited. All the hard work I've been putting in to abs, I'll finally be able to really see the actual results of. Also will be happy to lose the last little bit of chest fat and have "flat" pecs. My arms and shoulders I'm a little less excited to see the shredded version of, because they're what makes me look the skinniest. On the other hand at least it will be easier to see growth in those areas when there's less body fat covering it up.

So my friend advises that I start ingesting some supplement colloquially referred to as "pre-workout". It's some scary lookin shit though, especially he told me to avoid some stuff that is basically "One step down from crack, and makes you piss test for crack".

Is there good stuff for a beginner? I don't think I'm ready for the crack-substitute.

hbomberguy is a pretty good watch. Little long-winded maybe.

Caffeine is recognized as a decent preworkout, 30 mins or so before you work out.

Personally there's too much shit going on in the supplement industry for me to really trust anything. Whey protein maybe, but even them I'm still a little leery of supplementing beyond vitamins. Seems like every fitness youtuber I watch sells a line of supplements, which seems like a big red flag considering some of them can't even pronounce the ingredients they're selling to you. I also avoid stuff like 5 Hour Energy, Monster, all those energy drinks too.

I haven't really done my research in to preworkouts, but point in fact, you don't *need* them. My mentality has always been, even in video games, "never rely on consumables." If I can't win without them, I won't learn to win without them, and I just need to get better/smarter/faster whatever. I take the same approach generally to working out too. Might I get more out of my workouts with a preworkout? Maybe. Or I may just end up spending money and adapting to a life style and fitness trends.

And most of the fitness youtubers I follow regularly put supplements dead last in the things you should focus on.

So I dunno. I figure if I'm doing any supplements, it should start with whey protein. Once I'm comfortable with that I may start experimenting with preworkouts. But in my unresearched and ignorant opinion, it seems like over complicating and micro-managing, which is not what the beginning lifter needs to focus on. Focus on nutrition, form and discipline and achieve confidence and consistency, there's plenty to git gud at there. Then start adding in things that cost you money and start adding "requisites" to your workouts.

TLDR: Haven't done my preworkout research because most of the advice I've been given is that it's very optional.

We shall listen no further to the spurious accusations that Soy Boys is "far-right propaganda" or "a scam". The time has come to enact a permanant solution to the Soy Boy menace which plagues our great masculine people.

Have a followup video.

edit

As an aside....man do I feel guilty when I miss a workout, for whatever reason. Friday I woke up feeling shitty and had to clock in after hours for work, and between making dinner and friends wanting to play games I was like "Ok...I can skip this once." Made up for the missed leg day on Saturday.

Today it's sort of the same story. Have some after hours work to do. Need to make dinner. But most of all, my right shoulder has been sore in not a good way since Sunday. I don't think I hurt it working out, I think I just slept on it wrong. And that always take a couple days to feel right. I did a couple pushups and felt the pain, not bad enough to stop me but enough to make me worry about making it worse. It hurts to externally rotate it right now, which is a bad place to experience pain during a workout.

So I will skip today, and not make it up since Wednesday is my other upper body day. And that kind of feels like crap even though it's the first workout I've chosen to miss and not make up due to how I feel. Always worried that once you let yourself skip one or two, it's a short backslide to "fuck it." Even when I honestly don't want to work out, I'm always glad I did afterward, I always feel good about making the effort. Even though one missed workout is minor in the grand scheme of things, it doesn't feel minor. I'm actually feeling like some vague kind of angst about it.

How we doin swoleites?

This last month has been a little rough for me. Travel, sickness, injury (slept on my shoulder wrong and it took it over a week to not hurt like hell), family issues. In short, one of the wheels on my fitness wagon fell off.

So I did an experiment, and let myself go a little. Drank more soda in a week than I have in the last month, ate some Fried Oreos (oh god, the stomach pains afterward), some fast food, had a nice big glass of beer, spent most of the days not working playing Dark Souls 3 like a drug addict and did no working out.

And, to no one's surprise....I felt like shit! Yeah it was nice to step away from the rigor of working out and eating right but you know what? It wasn't easier. You just immediately fill up that void in your discipline with transient shit that distracts you. It's like.....sleeping in to catch up, and waking up feeling no more rested than if you got 8 hours.

Momentum is so important to staying fit, it's crazy. Even down to how your muscles feel. After a week off, all the tension went out of my muscles. After 6 months of a weekly workout routine, it felt weird to have my muscles return to a state of normalcy. Not constantly aching, not constantly throbbing, nerves firing, blood pumping. I felt like butter this last week (shoulder aside) and while that is a great feeling.....I felt so out of my routine, it felt like I'd flushed my motivation along with all the muscle tension. I've gotten so used to my body feeling slightly strung out all the time that feeling fully rested felt wrong. I've come to rely on that feeling of "being worked" to in turn fire me up for my next workout. In some ways the absence of it almost felt like I was starting all over again, even after just a week off.

Of course that feel rapidly went away but.....I doubt I'll meet my goals by the end of March. Just too much shit going on that distracts me from both my nutrition and my workout schedule. I know some fitness coach or model would say "that's no excuse!" and they'd be right. But I don't doubt my ability to be disciplined anymore, nor do I doubt my ability to resist the things I know are bad for me. I just know that pushing myself when I'm facing other environmental stressors isn't going to give me a good workout, and if my mind isn't there, the effort probably won't be either.

S'alright though, I'm back on the horse and summer is still a long ways away. Plenty of time to drop the rest of the weight I've been looking to get rid of.

I've been doing great myself Nenjin. I've finally hit my stride. For the last two weeks I've spent something like 10 or so days at the gym, working hard. It feels like if I'm not aching and sore afterwards, I clearly didn't work hard enough and I go right back at it. I talked to someone at the gym, a friendly weightlifter who was kind enough to give me pointers, I'm grateful. Though, I still feel like a wimp, with once having to call for help when trying to lift a barbell with small 25 lb weights on each end (so 50 total), and I felt like I'd made a fool of myself, but it's no biggie I guess.

I've also started consuming this Whey Protein post-workout stuff. The jury's still out as to its effectiveness, but it tastes good at least. I also experimented with Beet Juice for the nitrate, which I heard opens up your muscles for better oxygen intake, still not sure about the effectiveness, but the godawful taste of it really makes you feel alive.

I just got back from the gym, typing this immediately getting home, and I'm tingly and shaky from the exertion. It's a good sensation.

While I still don't enjoy exercise, I much prefer a shorter burst of high intensity exercise to, say, spending an hour on an exercise bike. The only problem with it is it has a habit of knackering at least one set of muscles for a couple days. Presently, my arse feels stiffer than cardboard.

I've learned the same thing about myself over this period. I'd rather give it everything I have for an intense set than draw things out. It's come to the point I take very small rest periods now too. I could rest for 2 or 3 minutes but I find myself wanting to push harder than that.

As one youtuber said "you can work out hard or you can work out long, but you can't do both." I will opt for working out hard, every time.

I've generally heard fitness youtubers say that the post workout "anabolic window" is a myth, and you don't really need protein the instant you are done working out. Most advice I've gotten is to have your protein shake in the morning. As far as post workout rituals though, I will say that eating very soon after your workout simply makes you feel better. I leave the gym on wednesdays feeling shredded and shakey. Me and a friend always go get Vietnamese Beef Noodle soup and tea right afterward, and damn me if I don't go from feeling like I want to die to alright after I get through a bowl of that soup.
