Thank God cavemen did not have spell check!!
« on: November 06, 2017, 10:06:49 pm »

We'd all be speaking in grunts today! Viva la spelling errors!

Did your impression of language growing up contain a reservoir of feeling that it was perfect? Or did you feel like there was weird rules they contradict each other all the time? Let language live!

Well at least anytime it shows itself. I'll be totally honest I wrote this whole post using Voice to Text which automatically used spell check.
It is great but but it is a tool. And we shouldn't be shaming ourselves when given the chance to write our own lettering and it is a little different. It's the little differences that make languages. It's what keeps them alive its what makes them not stagnate what helps them to evolve!

So I'm going to keep on spelling it teliport basically.

I believe spellchecks is one of the main forces behind the trend of losing the usage of compound words in the Swedish language. And this is a change I loathe. The text both becomes less imprecise in telling you what it is about, as well as loosing the mirroring of the song of the spoken language.

For this, spell check can rot in hell.

But, y'know, that helps the evolution of language.

I certainly wouldn't consider myself a prescriptivist, linguistically, but deliberately making typos and breaching commonly accepted rules of grammar in contexts where one has no reason to is frankly absurd and accomplishes nothing but making one look foolish. AAVE, regionalisms, alternate spellings, those sorts of things are perfectly fine; they're just as valid as any other language, and are either socially accepted, or I feel they should be socially accepted. But purposefully violating rules with no socially acceptable alternatives just makes one look either lazy and unwilling to learn, or like a first-world anarchist who thinks breaking minor rules for no reason makes them cool.

If you're getting the point across, that's still well and good, but it's a person's own responsibility how they're perceived by others, and language is a very important part of that.

Also, and this is very much off topic and a personal gripe, but the solo thread you keep locked out in the creative projects forum and bump once a week with your, uh, whatever it is, strikes me as vain and obtuse. Why bother with a public forum if you'll neither explain nor allow comment on your stuff?
Ummm, did you click the link at the top of the first post?

I enjoy her shit posting.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
She has this innocence about her and the creative project that is locked is her own to play with, we can only speculate on why it's locked but the answer is truly irrelevant.

I kind of agree about the spelling thing but really do see organic written language (most notably documented in Twitter) where people make the extra effort to type as they speak, so I think the regulating effect on spelling and language is perhaps overstated. I'm more concerned about the effect of type in general keeping letter forms and alphabets constant.
