Who here emulates games?
« on: November 05, 2017, 05:32:35 pm »

Theoretically

What platforms and games do you emulate? I'm getting into emulation and need ideas for games and stuff.

Probably have better luck with this in Other Games. Also might want to check with toady, though. Strictly speaking emulators tend to be legal (in part, if not whole), but roughly equally strictly speaking a lot of surrounding stuff involved tends to be not. You want to be careful discussing such on the forum, lest you encounter Ser Terms of Service.

That said, your ideas for games and stuff would probably be the best of list of any particular platform/genre you're interested in that has a functional emulator (that your computer can run, anyway). Which is most things up to around the PS2/wii these days for console, PSP/DS for handheld. You're pretty spoiled for choice if you're getting into it for the first time and didn't do much non personal computer gaming in the last couple decades.

I generally recommend poking around to see what games have been translated by unofficial sources, personally. It's not a guarantee, but often enough there's something special about a game if folks are enthusiastic enough about it to go through the pain and effort of translation and hacking their way through a localization.

If I WERE to emulate games they'd be gamecube and nintendo games, mostly Legend of Zelda. Dolphin and Mupen is what you're looking for in that case.

Thanks for the impormative response Frumple I'll just edit my question, I'll search see what I can find. I'm theoretically running this on a raspberry pi 3, so no PS2 games...

Something I can speak at length about!

What emulators you use depends on what platform you are running on.

Predominantly, I play on a game console, and want to emulate game consoles.  As such, I use the most powerful of my hackable consoles to emulate other consoles, so I dont have to get off my duff (or dig in my closet if the game I want is really retro) to change systems.

Currently, that is a Wii-U sitting on my shelf. (I would much rather use my Xbox-One, but nope, not hackable.)

On the Wii-U, I use Haxchi to enable homebrew, and use homebrew channel in the vWii built-in emulator.  On the vWii, I use an emulator called Nintendont to emulate gamecube titles, I use a USB loader to run Wii titles (only ones I own)-- Snes9x GX to emulate SNES titles, FCE Ultra GX to emulate NES, Genesis Plus to emulate Sega Genesis/Masterdrive/32x games, and I use injected virtual console containers for N64 titles (installed with MultiModManager).

On my PSP, (an old PSP1000, running custom firmware) I have a GBA emulator, a genesis emulator, a snes emulator, A nes emulator, a copy of Dosbox (YES, REALLY!), and ScummVM.  I use injected eboot files for PSX emulation.

As for titles that I emulate, they are all rom image versions of games I actually own.

On a Pi3, what you want is RetroStation. There is a straight up distro for that, RetroPi.
https://retropie.org.uk/

It combines a nice front end with a no-nonsense linux backend, and easy to configure glue for many system emulators.  Basically turns the RPi into a game console.

pcsx2 is a good PS2 emulator. It's a bit finicky to setup and does take a bit of power on your machine to get full frame rate out of it.

Given PS2 just uses normal DVDs you can also simply run game discs from your computer disc drive.

I don't get full frame rates, but for strategy games like disgaea and romance of the three kingdoms, don't particularly need 100% speed.

When I was young I always played games on a SNES emulator (PC wasn't powerful enough to emulate the N64)

Definitely some golden oldies on the SNES

I play Super Mario Sunshine a fair bit (via dolphin).
I actually own the game, so no issues. I just cant figure out where the gamecube is in the attic.

Do you have a controller or can you play with keyboard and mouse?

I remember in the computer lab class at school there was a lot of really cool games like this one called The Incredible Machine. If I could I'd probably emulate that.

I've always wanted some 3d Nintendo gameboy whatever they call their moderner hand helds so I could play the 3d pokamontas games.

Hypothetically, of course.

Sometimes I emulate Pong by just playing really slow air hockey.

Sometimes me and my brother emulate Super Mario by smashing our heads into floating bricks and eating "special" mushrooms.

I will occasionally emulate my old NES SNES and Sega Genesis games.  Primarily because the vast majority of my cartridges are no longer fully functional due to the batteries going out.  It's either reverse engineer the cart to replace the battery, or emulate it, and emulating it is easier.  These companies have no right to deny me enjoyment of my legally purchased products.

I have also emulated my PS1 and PS2, for convenience sake on my PC  But only using physical disks instead of ISOs. I don't do that as often though.

Hey, I still have the CD for that one! I think I ran it via Wine once.

Then again, the same team made Contraption Maker, so if you don't want TIM specifically, there's always that.
