Excerpt from the writings of General Samute Rameni: Having participated in the extremely successful (Yet abhorrently brutal) of the inhabited areas of the central front of Janal, I witnessed the absolute killing power of a modern army entrenched and fortified against another modern army. The death toll upon the attackers were extreme largely in part of the machine guns the royal army had. Both men and horse entered the range of the heavy Carrera guns and cut down effortlessly with fire from our Hor-Aha cannons, in particular their explosive shells, rending many more into indistinguishable chunks of bloody flesh scattered across the landscape. No longer is the offensive so overwhelming that nothing may suffice as a defence; the defender with machine guns can extract a very bloody toll from any attacker so forcefully that any attack spent upon the defender without proper care and planning is doomed to fail with a massive amount of the attacker's troops dead.

The offensive is stoppable, and one that can be easily stopped at that. No longer can an attack be relied on to carry the day. No longer is offence the best idea.

Battle Report 9, 1898
This year, we have not only made the Sekhmet 1.6-inch Revolver Cannon, which, now fixed is a glorious cannon that should strike fear into our enemy's at sea, or well, some fear anyway...But we have also finished project hippo and unleashed the QF Tauret Field Artillery Piece model 1898, a fast firing heavy hitting artillery peace that, once we get a proper ironclad, will be the terror on both land and sea. But for now it will just be a terror on land. We also made flares to go along with it, so we can utilize it from longer range then ever before, using indirect plunging fire.

The Khan's lacky's have made the Shuurga LMG A machine gun that, sadly, is better then ours, as its light enough that most can carry it by themselves, takes longer to overheat, and can be loaded much quicker then ours can. They also made Osolt HE TNT, shells made for their cannon full of TNT to explode when they hit the ground. This makes their cannons much more deadly, but, they still have to have direct line of sight to fire, unlike us. So we have an upper hand for the moment.

Battle Report, Naval Combat: With the Skhmet cannon on some of our ships, we are able to do some real damage to the Karikhitans. Not enough to actually sink them, but enough to kill a chunk of the crew. Unfortuneatly, with their new cannon shell, our ships are sunk even faster then before and as such, we aren't able to fire upon them long enough to kill more then a few crewmembers. But it is a promising sign seeing how dire the naval situation was last year. It should also be mentioned that there was a report that a Luu class was hit by a Tauret. As one may guess however, its not enough, and the Khant's keep a major Naval advantage

Battle Report, Ruins. Attackers, Karikhita: As one might guess from what happened last year, the Khant's control of the sea has resulted in shipments not arriving and our soldiers on the ground suffering because of it. Now, while normally they would be able to hold the Karikhitans off due to our superior technology, with ammo issues just like before things are very very difficult for our soldiers. Our new Skhmet cannon proves to be quite useful here as most cover that the Karikhitan soldiers hide behind is able to be penetrated by our cannons and the soldiers on the other side of it killed. However, as we expected they are quite hard to move and for the most part are stationary emplacements due to the difficulty involved in moving them. Still, like our machine guns, they eat up ammo quickly and are out of it far to quick to be of much use. However their shield protects the gunner a fair bit, and only the most skilled of Skirmishers can really hit the people behind them. All of this combined with Karikhita's incredibly mobile machine gun results in us being kicked back into the mountains by the Kharikhitans, and soon enough they will get their resources back from this location unless we do something about it. [Nafuna 0/4, Karikhita 4/4]

Battle Report, Villages/Hills. Attackers, Nafuna, Karikhita: The battle here is a simple one. Although the enemy now has explosive shells that they commonly use to destroy our machine guns or revolver cannons, our own artillery is good at anti artillery work. Usually, one of our soldiers will shoot a flare at one of the enemy's own cannons and soon enough, it will go away and be nothing but a memory while our artillery is happy to fire away safe behind our lines. Our own machine guns with the absence of enemy cannons are decent and our Sekhmet cannons are wonderful, especially with the shield that protects them. Because of this, defense of our lines is easy, however attack is another. Our machineguns are heavy but able to be moved and used when assaulting the Karikhitans, our cannon however is another story, and its very very rarely able to be part of an assault. The enemy's machine guns are also very effective in defending their lines from our assault, and due to being light, our artillery aren't always able to hit them when a flare is sent to the place the arty needs to hit, as they can just pick up the gun and run, however, by just causing them to pick up their things and book it to not get blown up, it lowers their ability to concentrate fire and we are able to with the use of our artillery push through their defenses. And as such, we have managed to gain a foothold on the hills, however they will keep their ability to take resources for now. [Nafuna 1/4, Karikhita 3/4]

Battle Report, Swamp. Attackers, Nafuna: Our new cannon isn't really able to be used here as its to heavy to find much ground to be set up in. Although, its not good for attack much anyway due to its weight. Still, what can be used here is our arty, because of its range and our flares. On the ground, the soldiers are down to who can fire first mostly, however still, the Karikhitans have an advantage because they don't have to reload after every other shot. However, our artillery is able to help, to at least push them out of cover and keep them moving, however their own machinegun is actually used here, and more then ours is thanks to how light it is, although its not so light as to be able to go anywhere here, thankfully. Still, we aren't able to take ground here, but we give Karikhita a bloody nose at least. [Nafuna 0/4, Karikhita 4/4]

Outside world and Internal affairs: We have mannaged to gather enough equipment to expand our industrial capacity, resulting in more ore from our nearby island to be extracted out of the ground and made into useful things, like golden crafts that the outside world oh so loves. We should probably make some new transportation soon however... In other news, the first auto insurance policy in the US is issued by Travelers Insurance Co. John Philip Holland achieves a successful test run for the first modern submarine off Staten Island, submerging for one hour forty minutes. Rudolf Diesel of Germany patents the diesel internal combustion engine. The Spanish-American war starts and ends in a US victory. Hawaii is formally annexed to the US. Most importantly however, the Fashoda Incident happened, and we get the feeling that Brittan wont care about this island as much as they might have before, although they will still have diplomacy with us.

Sobek class Nushunefu (Water-wind sailor)
The Sobek class represents an evolution of the Asennu that has served the Nafunan royal navy for all these years, and utilizes steam as it's primary means of power - driven by an as-of-yet unused invention in the vastly outdated royal navy, the propeller. The ship is propelled with a powerful, large geared piston steam engine driving two shafts, each one connected to one three-bladed and one four-bladed propeller (to the center) - providing as-of-yet unseen speeds for a ship of it's tonnage. The four-bladed propellers provide good handling at lower speeds or rough seas, fuel economy and durability, while the three-bladed propellers provide the ship with adequate acceleration to reach speeds potentially surpassing or equaling that of the Luu (~16 knots), though even if this fails the ship is armored and armed enough not to care. The ship is longer than the Asennu to allow for an armored coal bunker and geared piston steam engine compartment (both to stop shells and to be used to lock it down in case of a fire), which are protected with another inch and a half of armor. It features two gun decks that hold a total of 12 Tauret cannons downsized to 4-inches, called Djer-Khenthap cannons, and two double turrets, which are manually operated, hydraulically assisted and rest on a circular rail for traverse, on the fore and aft mounting 6" Tauret cannons, featuring all the nice aiming devices our artillery crews enjoy, as well as four Sekhmet 1.6-inch Revolver Cannon mounts on the main deck, in the fore, aft, starboard and port position to help against enemy ships that get within firearm firing range, or against the older Karikhitan ships. The hull is complete with a sloped iron section criss-crossing it's casemate guns to form a larger effective thickness against incoming enemy shots, which is 1 inch thick without the sloping and also protects the back of the aft turret, running until the Sekhmet on the port and starboard. The ship is entirely clad in iron, with a 4.5" thick belt with a 1" sloped extension on the sides, 2" of deck armor, as well as 2.5" on the turret's front, sides and the command tower, while secondaries have 2" of frontal and side armor. All turrets share the same top armor of 1". Keeping with tradition, the ship's cannons can also be taken out to provide a second role - as a resource transport - keeping 1/4th of it's cannons on the first deck on each broadside for basic defense. For those interested, the ship weights 4,821 tons and has a complement of 392 sailors.

Quick Rundown:

Armament:
4x 6-inch Tauret cannons in double turrets.
12x 4-inch Djer-Khenthap casemate cannons
4x Sekhmet 1.6-inch Revolver Cannons on fore, aft, port and starboard mounts.
Armor:
Belt: 4.5"
Wooden Hull: 12"
Belt Extended: 1" (the thing on the sides)
Deck: 2"
Conning Tower: 2.5"
Turrets: 2.5" front and sides, 1" top
Secondaries: 2" front and sides, 1" top
Ammunition Bunker: 2"
Coal Bunker: 1.5"
Engine Room: 1"
Tonnage: 4,821 tons.
Complement: 392 sailors
Engine: 650 ton, 2,800 horsepower Geared Piston Steam Engine
Estimated Speed: 12 - 14 knots

With this we regain dominance on the seas and we can get a steam turbine via a revision if we really want to, or we could get a train to boost our industrialization and resource income, as well as troop transport to the front lines.

Very Hard: 6
Sobek class Nushunefu:
Once again, we have proven that whenever we put our mind to it, we rule the waves. The Sobek Class is a expert example of a modern ironclad that no nation would look down upon about thirty years ago anyway. Armed with four main guns and twelve smaller Djer-Khenthap cannons in casemates in addition to four Sekhmet revolver autocannons. The ship is actually armuored and should be able to deal with the Karikhitans cannons decently, and its screws are top of the line, being bladed propellers. The ship can make a speedy 14 knots, not as fast as the enemy's Luu, but who needs speed when you have more iron protecting you? Naturally, due to the armament, it should be able to kill enemy ships so long as it hits them. We believe if we had a better engine it might be able to reach speeds faster then that of the Luu. It also should be mentioned the ship has boosted the moral of the poor and neglected sailors in our navy, which probably really needed this. There is also a transport version, which is better then our current transport, but not enough to give a major boost to our logistics. Costs 3 ore, 2 wood, Complex, Expensive.

It is now the Revision Phase, The Pharaoh is pleased and our sailors are ecstatic

This is why you always let the Cannalan design a ship. Moving on - now to tackle our logistics and industrialize faster~!

Markata 2-8-4 Steam Locomotive Series-A model 1899
Following her return from abroad, Amunet Serq set out to bring Nafuna closer to other civilized nations across the world, such as the British Empire, by administering a patent for her own geared steam turbine locomotive, inspired by Charles Algernon Parsons, and found a company in Nafuna to take advantage of the invention. The Markata uses an axial-flow four-expansion vertical compound steam turbine, reducing thermal losses caused by cylinder cooling, which is quite developed compared to anything used on the continent before - fitted with a mechanism to reverse the direction of the piston to allow backwards movement, coupled with a surface condenser to attain peak performance, a preheater, a mechanical stoker to feed the coal into the engine, and tuned to maintain high efficiency both at high and more common speeds, allowing the Markata to ferry large amounts of cargo on far distances at high speeds, while having fewer moving parts than conventional piston locomotives. The more cumbersome condenser is made up for by the efficient engine. The locomotive's wheels are driven by a traction motor driving each axle through a gear drive, and by mounting the relatively heavy traction motor directly to the power car's frame, rather than to the bogie, better dynamics are obtained, allowing better high-speed operation. The leading wheels have limited side-ways motion and can pivot, as can the trailing wheels, aiding in turns both on entry and exit. At a weight of 81 tons and a boiler pressure of 210 psi, the coal-fueled locomotive should be capable of achieving a power output of 3,366 horsepower and a constant speed of around 52 km/h on a standard track - allowing it to ferry large amounts of cargo to and from the frontlines, as well as within Nafuna to increase the rate at which it's industry can develop, people can be transported and resources can be gathered. The locomotive comes in two sizes, one for a 4 ft 8.5 inch standard structural track for industry, transport and in general whenever construction time, free space etc. aren't an issue such as on frontlines where it's secure, permanent bases and what-not; and a tight gauge at 3 ft 3 inches for trenches, fortresses, field outposts and closer frontline logistics; as well as mountaneous terrain or other spaces where building a standard railroad would be too costly or outright impossible - an example being the swamp. The two gauges run as one interlaced track until it's time to separate the two, where both an entry and an exit point are present for the smaller track, as well as a lever to direct it's travel and the usual signs depicting in what state the track is.

Very Hard: 6
Markata 2-8-4 Steam Locomotive Series-A model 1899:
The Markata is a very good step in becoming a modern industrial nation. Now, the locomotive is actually better then we expected it to be, at max speed it is able to go to 44 miles or 72 km an hour on flat straight tracks when equipped with nothing but a coal car, nothing particularly impressive now days, but definitely not bad for our first train. It also has been found to have good pulling ability, and is able to pull quite a few cars without suffering too much for speed. Of course, while all of this sounds good, there is one major issue about the Markata that's not the designs fault that prevents it from being as useful as we want it to. We don't have anything outside of test tracks for the locomotive... Though that will hopefully be fixed soon enough by Amunet and her company hiring people to make the tracks to make it useful, and luckily, we suspect it wont take to long for its effects to stat showing.

It is now the Battle Phase, Neferu is proud of your work.
