The Ameliorate War, An Arms Race game, Nafuna, 1904 Battle Phase
« on: November 01, 2017, 02:49:37 am »

(Nafunan Banner/flag made by Nikola/Thanik and slightly modified by Talion)
Over a thousand years ago we where forced to leave our home and the Nile, and we sailed in the hopes of finding a new home where we would be safe. We found that home here, and for a thousand years we lived in peace and prosperity, the lands we landed on like home. At first, there where others here, but over the years they slowly came and joined us as we grew from a small group of people to a true nation like Egypt once was and managed to build great cities and farmed the land. Over time, we grew over the land and the gods helped us. But little over six hundred years ago, another people ended up on this land to the north. For a time, we lived in peace. But then, they started raiding and taking our land while we where unprepared to defend ourselves and our new home. A mistake we haven't made since. We have been at war ever since then, and we never have been able to finish off these invaders once and for all. However, that might change now. Not too long ago, an odd ship sailed and made landfall, strange people with odd accents and languages came. Over the course of a month, we managed to make communication with them and learned that the world has advanced far past what we have technologically, but that will change in time. With this edge, we will finally push off the invaders once and for all, and you have by order of the Pharaoh been put in charge of saving our lands from the invaders.

Looks to be more people on Karikhita's side, so let's go with this one.  First order of buisness, let's go with one of the easiest methods of building a gunpowder weapon and make some form of cannon.  They were made before handheld weaponry, so it should be a bit easier than trying to improve our matchlocks right now.

This games all about for being in an atoll archipelago, we need a war-boats and future water transport. I'd recommending first trying to introduce a steam-boat because it's 1890 and we can use the industrial revolution to our advantage here.

Quote
Steam Corvette mk 1:
Source Idea

Utilizing current revolutions across the globe of the industrial kind, combining the power of a steam turbine engine to power our ship would be more powerful than any form of sails or paddles. This steamship is supposed to have of the thin-light armor class since we barely understand aerodynamics and trying to thicken the armor and having it fall into the ocean would not be ideal. As of now we may lack access to cannons and other sources of weapons, but it will be built with the proper weapon holes to be able to use this technology in the future.

The Steam Corvette will have the ability with its steam engine to ram slower sailing vessels, and has the ability to have a light amount of land and boarding raiders, with a requirement of only 25 sailors, most of them being skilled technicians to maintain the goddamn boat steam propeller. And an hold barracks of 25 soldier marines, for the purposes of assisting boarding and amphibious raiding.

The Steam Corvette from one tip to the other, should be about 41m (135 ft) from one tip to the other, and an effectively reach in height so that aerodynamics takes place.

Just a note that we're going to be industrialising by event, rather than through techs so it's worth remembering to keep that in mind. Building steamers is a bit far fetched if we don't even have steam engines or factories.

Though all that being said, that design is a pretty solid one Zan. Getting better artillery means we can knock those filthy mongols of their horses. And knock their horses off the ground as well.

Bonus, it gives us access to a prototype cannister shot with the scrap metal.  That shit'll be devastating as hell against swordsmen and cavalry.

Anyway, for a revision (presuming the cannon goes well), should we try for switching over the match to use flint instead, or go for a generalized decomplexification?  Former would make the more reliable in different weather types and somewhat usable from a chariot, but the latter would make them more plentiful.

Edit: Could add a bayonet as well on either route...

Edit 2: Looking at the battlegrounds, improving the reliability would be best for the swamp, while reducing complexity would be better in the mountains.  Given I don't think cannons will be able to be used as often as the villages in either of those locations, that's roughly what the decision is about, though quantity would probably help in the villages more...

Food for thought: Given we don't have steam engines yet and events will result in our industrialization, would it not be easier to make cannons now and save the steam ship for when we have steam engines arrive via event, allowing for us to start with a ship with cannons rather than being stuck with something who's only offensive ability would be ramming and it be far easier to actually make the ship?

Again guys steam ships are vastly out of our manufacturing range, and we need to get out army up to napoleonic standards first. A sailship with cannons would be more effective than unarmed steamships anyway.

Flint sounds like a good idea, but I think we might want to save that design for the next phase and make flintlock muskets and revise in the flintlock rifles.

Presently in the islands, we are fighting over mountains. If we lose out on the mainland we will be having fights in mountains and hills. As a result, there is certainly value in focusing on technology that helps us win in the mountains, as it allows us to fall behind in the short term while we research more difficult technologies.

Which is what the cannons will give us. Neither side has the ability to build ironclads so even a basic cannonball will tear through any ship they can build. The ability to revise a better ship than they can build by virtue of ours being far better armed is not to be underestimated at all. Hell, we'll basically prevent them from even getting near our coasts with these guns.

For the mountains we'll just need better infantry weapons and ones that are more numerous at that. Bit of a hellish environment to design equipment for.

Shrike Musket

The shrike is a failing breech block smoothbore flintlock .60 cal musket. The failing breech block is operated by a lever off to the left hand side of the weapon. Pulling up on it lets the user insert a paper 'round' in which a musket ball and powder is contained. After which the user then slams the lever back down and uses a needle located on their powder horn to puncture the paper and expose it to the power tray. Then the user then places a small amount of gunpowder in the tray and cocks the firing mechanism and, is ready to fire. The entire 'receiver' of the weapon is made from cast bronze which greatly reduces the difficultly of the finer parts of it, at the cost of increased weight. In addition the bronze expands when hot more readily then iron, reduced although not defeating gas leakage. The barrel is just a smooth piece of cast iron.

We could probably get muskets in revisions of our rifle (Which should be easy enough to do, any we don't have any rifle-specific ammo. So far we're still just using musket balls.) and getting something like the Minie ball round or something might need to wait until we have factories.
