Why not fix the one (or two) issues with our current rifle?

Because said issues are inherent to the rifle being a matchlock. And the plan is to build an outright better infantry weapon next turn.

Technological Understanding - Matchlock Rifle - While we have some understanding of how to produce the rifles we had gotten from the British, working off of a model vastly limits the abilities of our smiths to produce the weapons and it means that we do not fully understand how the weapons work.  This has resulted in a vast reduction in the number of weapons we are able to field.  To correct this, we shall perform extensive study of the weapons to fully understand how they work, and produce a set of standardized template plans for use by smiths across the nation to work off of.  Further, it was learned from the British that the weapons could be utilized as a form of spear if an attachment known as a bayonet was added.  We shall endeavor to create one in to form of a short spike that is offset from the line of fire of the musket.  It is not directly forged to the barrel, instead being attached by a ring that fits around the outside.  To prevent it from falling off the end of the rifle, a screw with flared "wings" at the top is added that can be tightened down to get a better grip on the outside of the barrel.

(TL;DR: Reduce complexity of the rifle and attempt to add ring bayonets.)

I'm going to be sticking with the squall mainly because, I want to have the strongest base possible for our musket and, I would prefer 10 smoothbores over 1 rifle.

We are going to need to spend a turn studying industrialisation at some point if we want to produce better stuff in quantity.

From what I've seen of what Pirate's said, there's apparently going to be a base level [complex] tag on all guns even with the best of rolls until industrialization is fully implemented.  Given that's a 'by event' thing, the best we can hope for out of our guns is them being at the Expensive level, so reducing the complexity of the current matchlocks seems to be the best in my opinion.  Bayonets are being added in as, really, what's so hard about making something like this?

Pirate's said industrialization is by event, not by design.  We might be able to help it along if we make a Steam Engine design, but we largely won't be in control of it.

It's more like that, you kind of forget about one of the updates to the vote counter . Also let's hope this land advantage will compensate for our inferior priority to the naval assets, I still believe our cannons can't even be used as naval port defense cannons, yet. Until we spend some designs or revisions.

Technological Understanding - Matchlock Rifle By intensive study of our rifles and the knowledge gained by making the Narmer 6 Pounder cannon, we have managed to make a standardized design on how it works. Along with an understanding on why the barrel was so complex as a test with a simple tube instead of a proper barrel has shown the shots to be much less accurate without the inner groves, (Naturally, such inaccuracy is unexceptionable) which act like the fletching on an arrow. The team where quick to make a more proper design of the matchlock so we could make experienced gunsmiths to make the guns. Of course, we have also made a 'bayonet' with a ring of gold to hold it on the outside of the barrel using screws. There are two small golden wings on each side of the bayonet as well for aesthetic purposes, however, it should be noted that the blade of the bayonet itself isn't gold and is instead steel. Naturally, only skilled gunsmiths are able to make, well, guns, however, now that as a high end skill intensive profession, we can turn them out at slightly reasonable numbers to equip our skilled troops. Matchlock Rifle's are now Complex.

We have to thank our quick and genius engineers, clearly they are blessed by Thoth.

It is now the Battle Phase, what lands should our brave defenders retake?
