By any chance is your trade depot near your refuse stockpile?

P.S. If you don't get this note, let me know and I'll write you another.
It's amazing how dwarves can make a stack of bones completely waterproof and magmaproof.
It's amazing how they can make an entire floodgate out of the bones of 2 cats.

I think it could also be a issue if you have dwarves hauling corpses past the depot?

Does this still actually happen?
In my last game human merchants arrived shortly after a battle and had to wade through blood and gore and scattered pieces of goblin to get to the trade depot. Didn't bother them at all.

- I don't think items in inventories (such as hauled corpses) affect merchants.
- I'd like to amend Quietust's question to ask if it's near your corpse stockpile (as corpses of sapients no longer are hauled to the refuse stockpile, but to the corpse stockpile).
- Other reasons for leaving are getting scared by "hostile" critters, or getting into a sufficiently violent fight with someone.
- As far as I know the sight of half a goblin tooth is still sufficient to normally send merchants into flight (but their guards won't get scared into fleeing and taking the rest of the caravan with them). However, I had an odd case where a merchant was paralyzed by fear after seeing some minor corpse piece, but then recovered and proceeded to the trade depot where trade was performed as normal. I later found a pile of scuttled junk in that general area. I think the scared trader was the last one in the caravan.

There was a ton of corpses all over the place. And for some reason the caravan left a little "gift".They left a ton of goods every thing from glass to weapons to iron and every thing in between.

The "gift" is the result of scuttling. An animal of burden drops what's carried, or a wagon deconstructs (I think) dropping what's carried as the draft animals abandon the wagon out of fright.
