Yeah, copied this from reddit. Paste:

A system and method is provided that drives microtransactions in multiplayer video games. The system may include a microtransaction arrange matches to influence game-related purchases. For instance, the system may match a more expert/marquee player with a junior player to encourage the junior player to make game-related purchases of items possessed/used by the marquee player. A junior player may wish to emulate the marquee player by obtaining weapons or other items used by the marquee player.

There is even a flowchart to show the process.

This seems either abusable or ineffective by the "junior" player. The idea would be to always bring the items that relied most on teammates having certain other items. If it only works once per item, then this only works until there are no more unadvertised items and then it doesn't do anything. If it works over and over, then a smart player can severely mess with the game balance by choosing what items to bring (and potentially buying some items but not the best ones because of the chance for an ally to have those).

I was saw an article about this and actually it gave me an idea.

We should make a just awful multiplayer game.  Put in any crazy and exploitative method we can think of into it(doesn't matter, nobody will play it).  Then patent every stupid exploitable method.

Once we own the patents, we can in theory prevent other companies from doing the same thing under threat of lawsuit, right?

Unless you're Disney, patents don't exist in perpetuity.

Huh, open youtube and see the usual suspects talking about this. Did all this surface simply because of Reddit?

Big corporations could afford legal battles of such magnitude that this hypothetical Shitty Gaming Company would go bankrupt, then they could buy the patents from the wreckage.

Yeah, but it really says something about the attitude. Many patents are made just-if in case there comes a reasonable opportunity to make money based on it. Gamers are just cattle and micropayments are here to stay, games as service is going to become the new main thing.

Yea; youtube's best place to see how wrong people understand difference between patent and actual implementation. Take World of Tanks. It's forums contain at least one matchmaking thread per week where someone brings about the WG patent on their mm, as evidence of rigged matches. Just that the patent mentions favorable terms for poorly playing or paying or best customers, whatever, it really doesn't prove the patent is in use. NVM, just shooting the breeze... Still. This patent is patently ridiculous, and indeed any game using something like this would crash and burn.

I don't think any game using this would crash and burn. People are being introduced to pay to win and loot boxes more and more. It is becoming normal so in a couple of years this might be the ordinary multiplayer experience.

Honestly though, companies own patents over the dumbest shit. Doesn't mean that they ever actually do anything with them.

Needs to be done, otherwise they could fall victim to patent blocking later down the line.

It makes little sense for this to be currently in use because Activision only got the patent right now. But I can totally see them using it in the future.

Remember, at first TF2 crates with paid keys were bad, but then became less bad because worse crap kept appearing. Recently, Shadow of War crates were overshadowed by the complete scumbaggery that are the SW:Battlefront 2 (2017) crates. They keep gradually escalating it. Soon, abusive matchmaking will be seen as tame.

It would be kind of fun to make a game where this would be part of the game world, though. (If I had a zillion dollars.)

Basic idea: dystopian future where the poor unwashed masses are rising in a (futile) armed rebellion against their billionaire masters.
Actual concept: you can play a prole scum (rebel or working for the man) for free. No progression, no levelups whatever. If you pay (buy the game), you can play a thug with persistent level progression. Thugs can be rebels or working for the man. If you pay more (DLC/lootbox/bonus stuff) you can be elite cyborg enforcer for the man.

If you pay a shitload, you can be a billionaire mastermind. Instead of even having a character on the battlefield, you just take part by piloting various drones and robots. When you die, you just spawn another drone as your character is safe and sound in a bunker somewhere... So not only do you get persisent progress, you get unlimited number of respawns.

So the game is unfair to start with and it is part of the story... and maybe abhors actual resentment towards the rich ruling classes among the proles. Communist Propaganda the Game.... do it blatant enough and it works as a statement against the whole model.

Shadow of war? You talk about this?
Look as Yet Another Dumb Game on android, and not as something major and worth talking about.
Any other shadow of war except single-player PC and consoles (?) game?
