Build the space welder. Detach the farm, and weld it into place centered above our own ship. Then scrap the hallway that connected it.

Plant the melon seeds in the farm plots.

Sorry, that bot is not supposed to be back up. I just snagged the compiled image and it had the bot upright. Its still downed with no battery.

Why on earth would it not be fine where it is?

I'm thinking we should glue our pod to the bigger ship, not glue chunks of the bigger ship to our pod. At least for now; the action is plainly reversible if we need to later.

Yes. +1 to above.

We do not have to reconnect the fridges---SPACE IS COLD.

Be back to criticize more later!

Totally false. Space is highly insulating because radiation is the least effective way to dump heat, so it's actually pretty lukewarm.

RIP logic.

No, actually. The fridge was cold enough before the atmosphere vented and the power went out, and it only gets colder from there (assuming no direct sunlight).

Space might be a good insulator, but what you're saying is FUNCTIONALLY EQUIVALENT to saying that a sheep is always lukewarm because it's coat is a good insulator.

In other words, completely false.

Regarding worrying about the inside of the refrigerator itself getting warmer? Yeah, obviously that's unlikely to happen unless it's exposed to something warm. Space isn't cold, but it's not exactly warm either. Everything that's exposed to vacuum should stay close to the same temperature it was for plenty of time.

I was just responding to the part where you said that space is cold, because that's a common misconception.

Except space IS cold. Particles in space have an average temperature of 3* Kelvin, which is *really flipping cold*. Now, you don't necessarily lose heat to space too fast, but you won't stop losing it.

If we define temperature as the total motion of all particles compared to volume studied (Not quite accurate, but encompasses the idea of temperature, which IS a measure of motion) space is the coldest thing around (Spoiler alert, space is the coldest thing around).

Anyway, I'm an astronomer, astrophysicist, and general science nerd. Trust me, space is COLD. The misconception is in how temperature works, or how it's defined, or sometimes how fast you'll die in space (Fast, but you won't freeze into a block of ice on your dark side and, simultaneously, burn where facing the sun).

Okay. Space is cold. However, space is also almost complete vacuum. Heat is interchanged between space & ship only when particles in space hit particles in ship. If you look it up, overheating when in sunlight is a very important problem for the ISS and space shuttles (when they were in service.) Even though the particles in space are so cold, they hit the ship very rarely, so a negligible amount of heat is exchanged.

If we were planning on entering the mess hall without a space suit (and thus fill it with warm oxygen), we would need to turn on the fridges.

Though if you don't plan on doing that, well, I guess you wouldn't need to.

I'm just gonna nip this in bud. If you leave the fridges in space they will remain cold. If you put them in an oxygenated environment, they'll require power to stay cold.

This doesn't really nip anything in the bud because all involved parties agree with this.

The argument appears to revolve around whether it's fair to say that space is cold, given that you cannot feel space.

I dunno, you ever stuck your hand out without a glove on in space to tell whether or not you get a sensation of "cold"?

Physics-wise, it's certainly fair to say space is "cold" because there's very little motion in space compared to the area, and those particles that are moving (Particles, not asteroids) tend to be moving fairly slowly.

Yes. Yes I have done that. Thank you for acknowledging.

Okay, speaking seriously, I do actually know what I'm talking about here, having some small amount of domain experience, though I don't like to discuss my credentials because I don't think discussions should be about them. To say that space is cold is terribly imprecise; for example, the temperature just outside Earth's atmosphere is, on average, warmer than at the surface. It also reinforces a common misconception that objects in space lose heat readily, which is plainly not true, so I felt the need to clarify it. To be honest, most astrophysicists I know would have been harsher in response than I was...
