I dunno, you ever stuck your hand out without a glove on in space to tell whether or not you get a sensation of "cold"?

Physics-wise, it's certainly fair to say space is "cold" because there's very little motion in space compared to the area, and those particles that are moving (Particles, not asteroids) tend to be moving fairly slowly.

That is actually incorrect. Particles in space can move over a thousand times faster than air particles. Apparently the "heat" in space is really just the microwave background radiation, so I guess we were all wrong.

I'd like to spin up as many solar panels as we can this turn. That way, we can work as necessary to get things done---if we can get that farm powered up, we'll be set, because it was enough food/water for a large crew (Compared to one man) for their entire voyage.

Basically, if we get power restored, we'll have bought ourselves all the time we need to, well, explore the plot, I guess.



As for particles moving fast--yes, thank you, I am aware that there are exceptions to the rule. However, "CAN" does not mean "ALWAYS DO", and movement/volume is very low. Density is ALSO very low, which means that as far as your biological processes are concerned (When in the shade, anyways) space is FREAKIN' COLD. Mostly because you'll be an icicle...eventually. It might take some time to radiate the energy away, but you WILL freeze like one sorry Popsicle.

If you look at the articles I linked you would see that particles in space move at around 400 km/s, while air particles move at around 500 m/s. Going by this source, the temperature of space (being the average speed of particles) is actually really high, but the thermal energy (being the product of the temperature and the number of particles) of any given cubic meter is very low, because there are very few particles.

So, can we agree on this:
  • Space has low thermal energy because it has very few particles, but is also a good insulator because of the same reason.
  • The fridges are at almost the same temperature as they were when the ship was punctured (almost because some of their heat was radiated.)
  • If we pump the mess hall full of oxygen because we want to go there w/o a spacesuit, we will need to power the fridges.
  • If we don't pump it with oxygen, we can keep it the way it is. (Actually, we might need to warm it up eventually once the fridges have radiated a significant portion of their heat and they start becoming too cold.)

This we can agree on. Well, mostly; I think we should build as many solar panels as we need, depending on the power requirements of the ship, which I suppose we'll have to use the PDA to discover.

I think it's safe to say that the three? solar panels we can pump out in a day isn't too many.


Produce and mount as many solar panels as possible, IF that number is less than or equal to 4. Otherwise, make 4 solar panels.

It looks like the engines connect to the battery, so maybe they have some kind of alternator and actually charge the battery while running.

If thats the case we should clean up the split fuel, move one engine to our ship, scrap the other engine for parts we desperately need and use the 3 barrels of fuel, then we can move the large battery as well.  Maybe make our aft section an engine/power place, a new room for an airlock and living quarters and the farm place at the front for farming stuff.

Lets wait on solar panels until we know if we can move the large power cell and if the rocket engines power it up.

We have limited fuel---best to preserve everything we have until we know what's going on.

Oh, and the less radiation we emit right now, the better.

If we aren't very visible, we aren't as likely to get found. Not that The Plot really cares, but still, caution before minute gains.

Don't forget farming equipment. There's probably some UV lights we have to power to grow plants.

Engines probably don't take any power other than possibly an initial startup pulse (like when turning over a car engine), given that we have liquid fuel.

Also, we should hold off making solar panels until next turn. This turn is about attaching our capsule to the ship.

We're going to have to fuel the mining laser and a welder for some time to get that happening.

We REALLY don't want to run out of power, not in our present condition. Not if we want our recycling stuff to keep running.

Why would we want to move it? Why does everyone want to move stuff? Look, okay, it's got a few holes in it but this new ship is FINE, it's got character.

Also, we should hold off making solar panels until next turn. This turn is about attaching our capsule to the ship.
Not sure we really need to do that yet either; the current tether should be fine until we plan on going anywhere with it?

Heh...

Anyway, my present proposal:
Get power set for a full day's worth of mining and welding work.

We have to restructure the ship, otherwise thrust is going to unbalanced (That won't be pretty).
So, today we get set for reconstruction. Then, we go ahead and cut off the engine section, make the hallway into a T, and cut off the hydroponics area, attach it to one side of the T, then sever the lounge/kitchen area, and connect that to the other side of the T. If we want to keep the circular section, then we attach THAT to the top of the whole mess, and we can start working on getting everything airtight (Should be fairly easy, though we'll have half a dozen or more welds to check on. We might just be using a spacesuit to get from section to section, as well as airlocks, but that'll be fine. More compartmentalization is better, I guess.)

After that, we've got a closed ship, and can make certain that the food isn't going to run out and the power's going to stay on.

Unbalanced thrust can easily be remedied by rotating the engines. Restructuring the ship will take too much of our very valuable time.

A. Sort of? That would require cutting off and reassembling the entire engine bank array, most likely, unless the engines pivot in their housings (Which is unlikely, given their apparent construction). And at that point, you ought to just be completely rebuilding the ship to gain the most metal possible out of it.

B. Our time is now less valuable, we have ample rations to make it to...wherever these guys were headed. Much more important is being certain the ship we have is functional. Also, the more we restructure, the smaller the ship is going to be. Smaller = sneakier = less likely to get exploded like the previous owners did.
