I have no idea what item he chose by the way. Yes, I am willing to take his character's place, but I won't play as his character, right

I'm fairly certain he meant you have the same OPTIONS as him. You get given a choice between a few items that you aren't told the effects of(just a name), not just anything you want.

That means you have to choose between either the baywatchers blunderbuss, or the backstabbers blunderbuss(I think)

Well the vast majority of Bay12ers are Bay Watchers, so I'm not so sure about that....
