Using trappers is a less messy alternative to cats.... then burrow a trapper over the area to catch vermin as food, pets or a trade commodity to ram into pretty cages.
Ah. I thought for sure that creepy crawlers were butcherable, but couldnt' figure out how. Once they go to Remains, they are useless, so far as I could tell.

So to get food from 'em,

Just store the filled animal trap somewhere close to your butchery. Live untamed creepy crawlers are auto-butchered: as vermin they're treated as items, not creatures, and thus they are a "butcherable item" just like the corpse of a hunter-killed animal. At least that's how it works in my non-DFHack forts. Creepy crawlers + trappers = creepy crawler meat/organs in your food stocks.

Dwarves just eat the entire creature as a delicacy from the cage they are in.

I strongly suspect that this is complete bunk. I've never seen it happen and am not aware of supporting evidence. It sounds like a rumour that just won't die because people find it sounds delightfully weird.
