Rolls1 - you fucked up big
2 - you failed
3 - you failed, but just barely
4 - you succeeded, but just barely
5 - you succeeded
6 - you succeeded so hard that it's gonna bite you in the arse a little bit.
Modifiers are gonna be a very big deal. Permanent modifiers will be super rare, but situational modifiers will be plentiful. E.g. you spend a combat round making sure your rifle is braced and set up nicely, you get a +1 to hit until you shift position. Also note that you can attempt anything, but not everything can possibly result in success
EDIT: note that I will be hiding a few rolls from you where your knowledge of your surroundings is concerned. Perception and Intelligence in particular you often won't see me rolling, but trust me: the rolls will be happening and they will be important.
CombatRoll off and apply modifiers. If you get:
5-6 above - same as a normal 6.
3-4 above - same as a normal 5
1-2 above - same as a normal 4
0 - essentially a 3 for both combatants
CritsThese determine exactly how good/bad for you your roll of a 1 or roll of a 6 is. If modifiers took your original roll over a 6 or below a 1, then you will have an appropriate modifier added to your crit roll. E.g. you roll a 5+3 because you are ridiculously skilled at this task, you will get a +2 modifier on your crit roll.
6 means "things went as well as could possibly be expected" and 1 means the exact opposite.
SkillsSkills are independent of physical characteristics. You can be a musclebound roidhead with -3 Physique, which means you'll accidentally put your fist through doors when you try to knock. Skills range from -4 to +4, and are modifiers applied directly to relevant rolls. An average human has 0 in all skills. On character creation, you can change your skills as much as you want, they just have to add up to 0. But remember, there are no dump stats. EDIT: any skill of -3 or less will require you to start rolling for everyday tasks.
Physique - applying the right amount of force
Dexterity - assembling a ship in a bottle. Or picking a pocket.
Agility - placing your feet just right as you trail run over difficult terrain
Charisma - hw u doin bby
purely vocal and body language, nothing to do with looks.
Perception - oh fuck what the fuck was that fucking noise.
Intelligence - I heard a raspy sound followed by a metallic click... I deduce that I'm about to get shot.
Willpower - ohfuckijustgotshotohgodaaaaaah
Note that weapon skills are not a thing. It's too OP for people to be able to dump Physique and become autoturrets. Not that you'll have a gun any time soon :^)
