Warning : this thread WILL include spoilers about the game. Avoid reading it if you don't know what a spoiler is.
Even though I think everybody in the forums knows what a spoiler is. It's good practice to add a warning message anyway xD




DeathPit - An attempt to escape Hell


Yay.

I've had this idea for a while.
Basically, I imagine my dwarves to be cursed or something like that.

Maybe they stole the King's favourite socks, or they ate the whole fortress' supply of cheese or burned its booze, or they said they loved elvish-kind.
Anyway, they did something very stupid.
Because these seven fools have pissed Armok so much he decided to embark them into the depths of Hell.

So there we go !



The idea :

My dorfs are starting in Hell. Near eerie glowing pits.
Since I want Fun, not !!Fun!! I have removed moved the clowns from Hell into the different layers of the Earth.
So we have clowns legions guarding every cavern layers and the surface.
My clown waves could not reach more than 25 (blame RNG...). So we have 4 legions of 6-7 each.

The goal for the fool dwarves is to make it out of Hell, defeating every demon in every layer and in the surface, and wait for rescue outside.



The embark :

I tried to be mean, but it could be worse. Overall, I feel the embark location will be easy.



Not that the outside world matters much when you embark deep underground. But there goes the map. 2x2 embark because I don't want the clowns to venture too far when I'll pierce the caverns.

Bad glacier, that has regeneration of dead things. I'm pretty sure demon can turn zombie, right ?
It also has an aquifer that we'll have to pierce to reach the surface. It will give the fools easy water access though.


Minimal embark supplies.



I was very kind and gave them booze. Probably shouldn't have because aquifer and water and such.
Zero food will be the concern here. But after the 2 cows are eaten, I will have to rely on cavern 2's plumps helmets. Or crundles eggs, if they survive the clown legions. We'll see.


About the starting skills, I chose :
- Miner 5 / Discipline 5
- Miner 5 / Discipline 5
- WeaponSmith 5 / ArmorSmith 5
- Mechanics 5 / StoneCraft 5
- Mechanics 5 / Grower 4 / Appraiser 1 (just for the display of Wealth)
- Mason 5 / Gatherer 5 (I will need to gather plants quick)
- Mason 5 / Record-Keeper 5 (Yay, why not)



Too bad you can't get strand extractor :(

Ho, and also, I won't be getting migrants. I get the notifications that migrants have come, but nothing is visible in the surface.
So, most likely when if I reach the surface, I'll find (un)dead migrants everywhere.

I'm not sure for merchants, but I probably won't have them either.

(I won't be able to write-up before Sunday. So updates might appear from this date on.)

I like the premise, but how can you dig up through SMR to reach cavern 3?

You use your 3 wagon wood to stairway to a 3z-above-ground adamantine spire.
That's why you need to scout locations.

You use your 3 wagon wood to stairway to a 3z-above-ground adamantine spire.
That's why you need to scout locations.

Ahh, and you can dig slade too, right? Build slade blocks and construct up!

Mhm, so can do 5z and higher stairways too. Can then jut a slade spire through the ground and establish gateway between worlds.

Though, this should be in community games. And this will likely suffer in FPS due demons in reanimating caverns, I expect.

Iirc sometimes embark-anywhere on ocean can also result in hellish embark.

LOL, embark in hell under the ocean would be a surprise finally breaching the surface.

Oh, I one-up the challenge. 

Using embark-tools embark anywhere, I chose to embark on a vault. 

I start dwarf with 20 dwarfs.  Spent time in DT to sort the professions I need. 

So, next I am going to work on the teleports.  But I will not know who wins in the Angels vs Demon on the surface.

DeathPit - A difficult start



So far so good.

But when I look at this...


... Well, I have the feeling that things could go very wrong very fast.

What are our supplies ? Not much : we have 0 food. 44 drinks. 1 anvil. 7 Picks and 3 wood logs.
Hoo, and we have a cow and a horse. Both female. So that's good I guess.


Let's do this !!



My long term goal is to get outside. But the road is long to go there.

- The immediate urge is to get the fools into safety. We need a safe place to establish a base.
- Then, will come the problem of food.
- After that, drinks will become problematic, so we'll need to figure this out.
- After we have a secured base with infinite food and drinks, I'll start reclaiming the layers. But one thing at a time.



First ! Into safety !!!

This...

...is all we have.

And it is just barely enough to reach...

...this lovely candy spire !

Once the 3 stairs are in place, I can dig into the spire. And TADA !!

Achievement get !


It must be some world record or something to reach adamantine after less than a week of play ! =D
These dorfs are maybe less useless than I though..

I ordered the miners to dig a hidy hole inside the spire.

This will do nicely ! All this free candy stone available !

Unabling raw to be built (not something you do every morning :P )

And, let's build !




OK.

The dorfs are out of Hell.

I built candy walls to block the demons. They won't get into our base.
I kept a way in Hell... Just in case. I can lower the candy bridge if I need to.


We established inside the SMR. We have candy floor. Very shiny. But not a lot of room.
The stocks are now all inside. Everything we need is here. In these 46 tiles. Miles below Earth.
We floored the open spaces. So there is no way for the demons in.... And no way for us out.
But we're alive.



And lucky to be alive too.
I can hear prehistorical demons roaming near our Hell entrance.
They are back. To remind us we're screwed.

We are trapped.




It's time for expansion ! Digging more rooms and discovering magma sea.
The dwarves are in trouble that is for sure. Surrendered by magma and demons.

Magma sea. Done !


Shiny stuff won't be a problem.

We have 5z layers like this one at least, FTM.


We a quite some economy now.
Stocks are assessed. They are not good.


It's been more than a month now. We need food !





React ! We must react ! First, let's dig a magma room !


Ok, then some smelting !



Now, some bucket action.



We have two female animals. We can't waste the 10 potential cheese they can give.


This cheese will buy us time.
But with the cows starving, I can't not butcher them.
So let's do it !



Sure enough, some annoyance occur with the butchering.


But my magma dump gets rid of the body parts quickly.
That's the food problem sorted out.
For now.


We are not out of trouble yet.
We will have to move up.

That was a tough Spring.

Huh. Good on timely escape. I'd probably have gotten greedy and started harvesting the webs. Though Pterosaur Brute sounds like it could be harvested for meat.

And gotta say, I wouldn't have thought about cheese. Could have kept the animals alive by chaining them and feeding them their own cheese every 41,6 days.

Wait ? You can feed your animals ? Aren't they grazers ? Don't they only eat vegetables ?

There's [CARNIVORE] and [BONECARN], but no [HERBIVORE], so I'm leaning towards yes. I'm not even sure that restriction plays a part, tbh.

An animal caretaker will take food and (force-)fed it to caged or chained creatures.

They can actually feed them.  Plump helmets would go along way as they would eat them raw, and get seeds. 
Too bad you cannot force the dwarfs to spill booze to get muddy floors.

DeathPit - Hard progress



Last time we spoke, I was in a tiny spot. Food and drinks were sparse. So I had to move up. Dig upstairs.

I did. And...

Sure enough, I breach 3rd cavern. Or should it be named the 1st ? Since I'm starting from below, you know... IDK but it has lots of nasties.

Many demons died ! Beaten by endless hordes of undead.


So did other things.

The undeads are just too many

But it looks like some demons are very well alive.
One is very close to the hole I dug !



The demon runs in the hole and through the stairs.


Damn it !



Luckily for the fools, I preventively walled up access to the fortress. So no fortress wipe.

But I lost one dorf to one cavern. I can't keep up like this. Don't have enough dwarves...
Better get the dead engraved, so he doesn't kill me in ghost form...



One thing is for sure.
I won't ever dare venture in the caverns ever again !



We need a plan.
In this scenario, dwarves are unexpendable.
Need to find a way.



Got it !
We'll use dwarven radar ! Basically, a farm plot can show you cavern tiles even if unrevealed.
So let's use that to reach the aquifer safely.




Using the radar, we breached safely the 2nd cavern.
Look what I found !

Wall it off ! Gather the mushrooms !


We did it !



Now we need mud tiles to farm. And we'll be good to go.




I ordered the dorfs to dig up. To the aquifer that is, I know it, close.

I still have 6 fools to get out of this mess...

DeathPit - Water shall flow !!!


We have safety, we have seeds, so we need mud in order to grow the holy Plump Helmets, granting us both food and booze. I must find water !



But before that, more about me !

I don't have a lot of experience when it comes to water.
I have yet to play intensively with oceans or pumps. And I only breached multi-z-layer aquifers a handful of times.

Let's get digging !




#?!$*ù !!!

Found the aquifer. Sure enough, it leaked !

I did plan ahead though.

I built this little corridor so I can block the flow.

...

But things don't look too good for the poor miner.

If you look carefully, you may spot him.


Well, I got other pickaxes left anyway...

I ordered a wall built to stop the flow.


It took a while to finish, but I managed to master the water.



The water flew down all the way to hell.


Into my meeting hall.


And to my forges' doorstep.




On the bright part, I have many muddied tiles now !
So I built a farm.



And we moved from the SMR hidy hole to establish near the aquifer.


Even though it needs refinement, it will be a much better base long term when I take back the surface !


But sadly, we paid it with the life of... Wait what was his name ?
That miner fool, who was he again ?


Anyway he's dead ! I must engrave him a rock now, so he doesn't screw my survivors more than he already did.




And... Autumn has come !


We managed to harvest some PH and brew 'em. So now, we can live underground forever !


Victory is near.


PS : Btw, the 2 caverns I breached cont 193 foes. Only 5 of which are not zombies.
So I am not going to head in there unless I have to.
