Got to about 200 (204 at peak I think) in a 13 year fort, If my old hard drive hadn't failed I'd still have that one.

My current fort is my best one so far and has been running for 18 years. Population has grown to 30 (the seven founders and 23 children).

Moonhome got to mountainhome, breeding up to from 19 dwarves in 39 years (it'd be quicker if I did it again) and retired at 147. Not bad for, iirc, mere 10 or 11-day turn in succession fort. (I don't usually aim for high numbers with these.)

I think another tree small embark test fortress went over four decades, I think killed that process after I had conducted my tests.

I tend to reach 200-250 pretty quickly, but my forts always die pretty young. I think the longest I've had one go for is about 4-5 years.

I'm still practicing good military methods and how to set up patrols, so I often fall victim to Sieges, FBs and Werecreatures...

I just decided to abandon a fort of 7 years due to fps death (6-8 fps). population 380, of which 310 are adults. 70 legendary and 60 non-legendary steel-clad soldiers. Destroyed a 140 strong goblin/troll/beak dog raid head on with only a bruised eyelid damage total that auto healed soon after. Wanted to take on HFS with brute force but with this fps im never getting that 300 legendaries I aimed for.

Starting a new fort now with much smaller embark size (3x3 instead of 5x5), less caves, and will limit population to 200. No more excessive textile industry either, I burnt through thousands of clothing items a year.

longest fort i had was 10 years, i stopped playing that one because the update that added taverns, libraries, and temples came along and i wanted to play with the new features.

the most dwarves ive had was at least 140 but im not certain of the actual number. i know it was at least 140 because the aforementioned 10 year old fort was a metropolis and the minimum population for that is 140

I try to keep forts going as long as possible before FPS death sets in, and then start another fort in the same world if possible.  My forts typically last for up to 40-50 years before they get retired and I"ve had series of forts for upwards of 3-400 years in the same world.

Same deal with me. I shut off immigration at around 75 dwarves, maximum. No more than that. Then I try to have arrange for dwarves to date each other and to produce families. It becomes a generational fort. Its great for story telling, where the same named blade may be passed down from generation to generation, or a son may inherit his father's tattered pig tail sock.

FPS death is a big problem though. You have to keep your fort small. This means producing as few items as possible, and the Factorio player in me finds this difficult. No, I really do want to have 5,000 iron bars. I don't know what for, but if I ever need them its nice to know that they're there. Unfortunately this murders FPS.

Lately I've been using the work orders to operate on a just in time system. Clever usage of work orders can nearly fully automate your fortress, and can do so while keeping inventories as low as possible. The fewer items on the map the better the framerate.

I usually do the same kind of generational thing, but with a lot more dwarves. I don't turn off immigration, but, once I have my core set of dwarves (usually named) established, the new migrants get to be petty slave labour - hauling, farming, sometimes milling if they're lucky - unless they're related to someone important. Or sometimes I just leave them to die outside. I tend to use fairly large embarks (and accrue tons of animals) and never seem to have FPS problems (except on certain community games), so I don't know what it is the rest of you guys are doing wrong.

Might be a tolerance thing. At what FPS do you consider fort to be in fps death?

Tough to say. That demon-ridden Pocketball turn was regularly hitting 0 for several seconds at a time, which I would have considered absolutely unplayable in the long run. But I can't recall any of my own fortresses ever dipping below the mid-20s or so at the worst, a level which I'd consider mildly annoying but not unplayable. At least 50, maybe 40, is totally fine.

It may be that I'm on an older laptop, but 50 FPS with 200 animals and 200 citizens + visitors is yeah, uh, far better than I do.

on my fort of 6-8 fps i checked what happens if I destroy all living things and items. Just the shell of the fort with a few visitors hanging around was performing 30 fps max...
