Skee seemed relieved. Looks like the Arachnastinian black archer wasn't as strong as he had expected. He was simply wielding a very dangerous weapon, something to be noted for the future. For now, he could afford to save his mana for confrontations to come. After all, this was war, and every resource mattered. He and Shnapa readied themselves for the Arachnastinian to strike with his scimitar, assuming a defensive posture and waiting for an opportunity to dodge or block and counterattack. They would keep fighting with this style until the archer was defeated. Once the archer was dealt with, he would go assist the rest of Shnapa's pack, bellowing a [Rallying Cry] before jumping into the fray. The other archers should oppose little resistance. Once they're all defeated, evaluate the global situation of the battlefield and check your pack for injuries.

Ulkas hummed, retracting his mind field and once again observing surroundings. With what Liel has found, peculiar fog properties made sense. Still, taking a chunk of the world into dream space so it may heal… Huh. So that’s how it is. To heal one’s own self, it was not necessary and an extremely wasteful action - unthinkable for a presumably wounded mind, even if it wished to heal its body. But to heal the land itself? Supplanting it into dreams made perfect if alien sense.

”Liel, thanks for your help. With what you’ve found, I think it would be prudent to cease or attempts to poke into the fog. It was not done to heal a body of a monster - too wasteful and uncertain of a method. But healing the chunk of world itself is too much for power of one singular mind. Thus, it should be a natural phenomenon, which should have attracted our unstable teleportation, like a whirlpool. Hm, it is quite good analogy.”

“Astrosa, what you’d say about hunting that Armor you heard about in the meantime?”

Armor hunting ahoy! Continue with -careful- examination of the wounded world around us and monster farming if opportunity presents itself. Seek directions as needed.

Science is always important. But it needs more flaming cats. Can't we build bridge-based catapults and fling flaming cats at the dust and goo?

It's time for the ATHATH Death Counter to increase once more in celebration for the end of the world.

You saw the peck coming again and executed an acrobatic leap you didn't think yourself capable of. Unfortunately your impressive performance fell flat to your audience, the bird, who caught you midair and pecked again. And like that, it sucked all the tasty bits out of your goopy body.

Purrbul is Dead

Azarian, the Imbued Thoughtling (Dustan Hache)
”Their might be a way, but we cannot stray. One mistake, and all is at stake. Stick together, might be for the better.” Azarian responded. A distraction might be good, but at the same time too many of them were injured to travel swiftly if they were detected.
Stay together, and lead the others as best as possible. we need every hand possible now with how many were injured. splitting up is a last resort.

"You found another way? Hmm... got it. We will follow you."
"I will close the way. Yevlaine, you will be in front with Azarian."

The one human that had protested a bit still seemed uneasy. The man whose eyes reminded you of gentle flames said something to him with yet another new expression to you. It was a smile, that you could understand, but that was a smile without showing teeth. It was unlike what you had seen with the Goblins, who always smiled with their teeth showing as if to showcase them for all to see. Here, the lips drew a discrete smile.

"Take heart friend. Paimni will be well soon. I sincerely believe these two... hmm monsters no longer quite does it. These two travellers were put on our path by fortune itself. I will bet my name on it."

Humans seemed to love complicated words, which you didn't find unpleasant. Far from it, you relished their complexity. The pulsating pain of your wounds brought you back from your musings, and you advanced toward the path you had identified.

Sneaking Together:
Moderate 10: [10]
Outcome: [4] -Critical Success-

Not a single trace of the Chimera nor its puppeteers. It truly was as the human said, as if some mysterious force, a sentient fortune had cleared the way. You passed without an issue, albeit all of you still held your breath until you were doubly sure you were all out of harm's way.

Then a few minutes later, which might have been hours, dawn broke. Right as you emerged from the woods guided by Toc, allowing you to see a cleared path among the tall light blue grass of the grassland. Upon seeing the winding streak of white along the blue, the humans couldn't help but let huge sighs of relief. The biggest one even started leaking fluids from its eyes, which surprised you. A sudden attack? Was he in pain? Quickly enough you pieced two and two together, and figured out some creatures could leak fluids out of relief. You were glad your body didn't have such a bizarre function.

"Ah... I can't believe it- We... We really made it through. Thank you... thank you..."
"Hey! It's not over yet until we get to the village, okay? Don't start slacking off now, we still got to walk a fair bit!"
"Haha, you can cut him some slack. Let's take a five minutes break maybe?"

Five minutes... that sounded good. You were feeling a little sleepy anyway, now that you could finally relax a bit. Sleepy... so sleepy...

(...) Time passes...
HP and MP fully recovered

You woke up in an unfamiliar room filled with a strong scent of wood, dust, and something alchemical in origin. Unlike the ruins you had wandered in for a long time back in the Deadland, the structure here was entirely made of wood. The architecture was simple compared to the ruins, but on another level compared to goblinwork. You heard the light breathing of an asleep creature, drawing you to the mind across the room: it was Toc, on a bed of sort. He was bandaged, which made you notice that so were you although your bandages seemed to have been placed a bit haphazardly such that their only effect was cosmetic. You looked at yourself a bit, and you imagined that must have looked good on you along with your colourful patches of cloth. The white from the bandages really complemented the yellow and-

The door opened, interrupting you in the middle of your internal fashion discussion. It was the human with flaming eyes, though this time he was wearing a helmet hiding his curly hair, orange like a ripe fruit.

"Oh did you just wake up? You can rest easy, we are on the outskirt of Line in a cabin used by hunters and foragers to rest."

You recalled that Line was the name of the village they were trying to reach. Breios took a moment to check on Toc without disturbing his sleep, and then resumed the explanations.
"I have a few more things to explain if you don't mind. First off I haven't talked about you to the villagers yet, I would rather have waited you woke up. To be honest with you, convincing them you are not hostile is going to be a tall order, be ready for the worst. Our kind is usually not so receptive to creatures that aren't, well, like us. If you are still willing to try, then I will help you. I gave my word as a member of the Cerulean Watch."

Recalling something, he further added.
"Ah another thing. If you see something that looks like a circle of largely spaced white stones, that's the village perimeter. I told you about the guardian statues of our country right? Well that's its range of detection, of the village's Sentinel. Before thinking of making an exception for you, we have to find a way to have the villagers at the very least tolerate you."

He smiled, this time showing his teeth.
"And if you need anything, just ask me or someone else. By the way what do your kind even eat? Are you good with fruits and grain? Ah, and when you both are better, and she wakes up, I would love for you to meet Paimni. She lives thanks to you and Toc, I'm endlessly grateful for that."

Once you were sure he was done talking, you said what you had on your mind.

There was no where to run, it was cornered. The Horned Wolf felt it's pulse rise as emotion took over... an great instinct rage overtook it in the face of overwhelming danger. It howls as it thrashed and bucked the wolf, intent on piercing and crushing it's foe against it's horns.

The pulse of your flowing blood echoed in your head, drowning the pain and sounds from the outside. Like a loose tornado that escaped a cage, you trashed around with such vigor the Snow Wolf had to let go of your back. Its figure was the only thing in your eyes, the white of the snow blurring in your bloody rage - and your chaaaarged! The monstrous wolf yelped as it was violently trounced, its whole side pierced by your straight horns.

Eximius Res, the Rusty Ring (Hawk132)
[Not good. There's too many of them to fight with our group in this state. I'll try to lead them away, be ready to move - and carefully.]

Acting quick, Eximius formed a Doppelganger of Prias away from the party - believably close that it could be the origin of what drew the undead towards them, but making sure to keep a relatively safe distance from them - before controlling it to move away from Prias and the others, drawing the attention and eyes of the undead away.

(Also, you forgot to update Eximius' mana after the mana drain - he's at 29/29 now.)

Eximius Res casts Doppelganger (-6MP)

Doppelganger Distraction:
Easy 6: [11]
Outcome: [1] -Success-

You sent away the Doppelganger, fooling the undead cohort into thinking that was the thing they had sensed. They reacted with extreme aggression the split second they noticed the shape running away from them, the necromancer conjuring and flinging an orb of malevolent energy before sending half its escort to chase after it. See their target was escaping from sight, they all gave chase until the surroundings were safe once more.

Right next to you was Caromash, who sighed in relief. The others saved their breath and just nodded.
"Thought my heart was gonna stop. Good thinking."

Prias decided to move forward until they had found a safer place from where they could better plan their approach.

Prias: Looking for safety (Deadland Survivor)
Easy 8: [6]
Outcome: [3] -Failure-

He only tried a few minutes before giving up: there would be no respite ahead, unless they were incredibly lucky. Beyond the near intact walls of the lost capital, one could only feel at first a silence heavier than death. An unnatural pressure, as if the air had been warped. Having trained his magical senses with Veras, and as an experienced hunter of the Deadland, the young hero knew that those were telltale signs of undead gatherings. It wasn't a stretch to imagine a level of danger unlike anything Prias had experienced.

As such they had to plan for their next move now, without resting. Investigate the unlife energy nexus? The magic energy drain? One then the other? Or something else entirely.

Iokx, the Red Cap (BlackPaladin99)
Stay, and hunt some more.  I will become stronger.

You decided to risk your chance and stay. You would become stronger, facing the strongest opponents.

Luck: [6]

You came across a suitable prey: a lone demon resting under a charred tree, a spear of dark metal at its side. From your position, the creature looked wounded. It was far stronger than the lesser demons you had fought, so it might have been one of a higher class. It was a white humanoid with thin wings, its tail resting on its right tight. His visage was horrible to behold: twisted into a mockery of an expression mixing fury, pain, and hate. Black markings emphasized his expression, and his eyes were two white dots floating in scleras darker than ink. You also noticed it was carrying a leathery pouch from which dripped some foul muddy fluid.

Grab one of these bugs, and use it to physically provide cover for Skra.  Use my body and it to physically absorb attacks aimed for Skra.

Grab Enemy (STR4 vs STR0)
Easy 6: [5]
Outcome: [3] -Failure-

Skra didn't reply, saving her energy to fly to safety as you instructed. You attempted to grab with your talons the badly damaged Hunter Leader you had just carved, but it proved harder than you expected even with your superior aerial skills. Well, if you couldn't grab it alive then it wouldn't struggle anymore dead, would it?

Squacks: Weakpoint Strike
Spoiler: Rolls (click to show/hide)
Squacks Attack Roll: 23=[18]+5

[Successful Attack]
Damage: [20] (9/28 -> -11/28)
Luck: [2]
Your Diamond Claws have shattered, losing you the first strike bonus.

You carved the insect to death, and grabbed its dead carcass to use as a makeshift shield, interposing yourself between the Elemanoptera and Skra.

#2 Attack Roll: 12=[11]+1 vs 9=[2]+7 [Successful Attack]

#3B Attack Roll: 5=[3]+2 vs 8=[1]+7 [Failed Attack / Open to Counterattack]
#4B Attack Roll: 16=[14]+2 vs 21=[14]+7 [Failed Attack / Open to Counterattack]
#2 Damage (1d4): [1] 25/25 -> 24/25
#1B Damage (1d8): [8] 24/25 -> 16/25

You interposed yourself between Skra and the barrage of elemental bolts - your makeshift shield proved really useful in absorbing damage. However after the fourth bolt or so it crumbled apart, forcing you to block some of the attacks. Their leader then gave a signal and they changed their attack pattern: noticing that magical attacks had a weak effect on you, they were about to close the distance to use their mandibles and claws.

You quickly looked at Skra. The situation was too tense to waste time speaking for her, and she only stared at your eyes asking your next instruction.

Skee, the Insect Parasite (Legendary Marksdorf)
Skee seemed relieved. Looks like the Arachnastinian black archer wasn't as strong as he had expected. He was simply wielding a very dangerous weapon, something to be noted for the future. For now, he could afford to save his mana for confrontations to come. After all, this was war, and every resource mattered. At close range, this creature posed little to no threat to you and Shnapa, and it looked like your mental attack had greatly weakened it already.

Arachnastinian Marksman: Scimitar Slash
Spoiler: Rolls (click to show/hide)
Marksman Attack Roll: 9=[8]+1
Shnapa Defender Roll: 10=[5]+5
[Failed Attack]
[Open to counterattack]

The enemy warrior wielded his scimitar in one hand in a neutral guard. You and Shnapa patiently waited for him to make a move, raising your own blade defensively. The Arachnastinian moved with calculated steps, and its form was inspiring to a novice swordsman such as Shnapa. There was an elegant deadliness in the way he held the sword pointing ahead - light as a feather, but surrounded with an aura of menace. Under other circumstances, Shnapa would have wished to learn more from that fighting style.

And lo, the blade drew an arc and retreated to spring into a thrust - a feint. Shnapa barely parried, moving purely on instinct. He smiled and couldn't help but mutter between his rapid breathing.
"Amazing!"

That was a swordsman. Refined and skilled, unlike the brutal Makralians who wielded their great strength and talents with the raw instinct they were born with. Shnapa stopped marveling at the blade that barely missed him and dashed ahead with his own blade held aloft. He wouldn't imitate and dare dishonour his enemy. No, he would just use everything he knew and had into a brutal overhead strike.

Spoiler: Rolls (click to show/hide)
Shnapa Attack Roll: 19=[11]+8

Wood and bone clashed as the Marksman had blocked the strike with his scimitar held with both hands. Shnapa roared, overpowering the Arachnastinian and bringing down his blade into its skull, cleaving it until the middle.

+10 Medium Essence

Immediately after absorbing the Essence, you and your partner joined the ongoing melee. With a great bellow, Shnapa let out a Rallying Call.

Luck: [1]
For a moment your pack was inspired to battle, and the archer started routing. But then you heard a strange melodious sound, as if someone had plucked a silk to produce a high pitched noise. You quickly realized what happened: enemy reinforcements attracted by the Rallying Call of Shnapa. In hindsight, maybe roaring that way in the middle of what was a sneaky operation wasn't that great an idea.

Your comrades gathered around you. Most of them only had a few bruises, save for Apa-nap who was bleeding from his arm. If you stayed here, you were bound to quickly get overwhelmed.

Ulkas, the Horned Demon (Sarrak)

The Fog was used by an entity to probe everyone inside, and with some subtle hijacking you could vaguely probe as well to find other creatures. You slew a few of them, from undead warriors who had been wandering incessantly, honing their skills, to near mindless blobs of flesh and unlife bent on consuming everything they could come across. One particular group that took your notice for their wittiness was a Skeleton Noble, an Undead Centaur, and a Spectral Duelist of sort. At first it looked like this would be the first group you would spare, until the self-proclaimed Noble made a critical mistake: he declared he would be come King, which sent Astrosa into a fit of rage. She laid waste to them to hammer into their heads that Ulkas would be King.

Slaying them had granted you an interesting insight, however. They told you a bit about their findings: the entity behind the fog was a tormented Armor of vast power, who hunted for powerful beings in order to itself become more powerful, as if evolving was a key to solve the condition of this place. Astrosa was then the one to realize one of the natures of the Deadland.

"Hunting grounds to raise suitable preys... I see. It is a larder where the food needs to mature, in a sense. Ahaha... so did this Armor think it could make food out of us? The insulting fool."

Whatever one could speculate, one thing was certain: the Armor was the keystone of this place. Vanquishing it would cause the dream to crumble, but leading to what? You could only speculate with what you knew. Maybe the entire place would be thrust into an unknown oblivion. Or it would return where it belonged, restored or disfigured.

You had gathered enough information to know how to find the Armor. It was always watching, always present. After all, it was the dreamer. You could call it, and it would manifest. Or you could prepare a bit more, or until it would come to you itself.

Blood, blood, BLOOD! Face the rival, crush the rival, defeat the rival! The Horned Hounds let's out a rugged roar, a mix between the furious cry of a bull and the hungering howl of a wolf, the intent of submit, flee, or die being conveyed in the only way it's rage addled mind can process. Then readies itself to wrathfully charge into the weakened snow wolves once again.

A cute intersex harem with everyone in love with the androgynous king and smart and useful enough into pushing the kingdom forward.

<Squack>Break off.  I got these losers.

That's a lot of them who left themselves open.

Melee Tornado time!  Counterattack all of them who have left themselves open.  Unlike usual, get the essence if any die.

Enraptured by the heat of the battle, Skee and Shnapa had completely forgotten the sneak part of their sneak operation. The newly arrived soldiers outnumbered them, and it was time to retreat with his pack, using the cover of the jungle to their advantage to lose the Archnastinian soldiers. At least they had taken out the black archer, which should relieve pressure on the ground troops. Getting the attention of a large number of soldiers on them might also not be the worst, because it would further help the other Makralians. Speaking of which, observe how the situation has evolved while running away. Can you see where the great leaders are?

Skee also made it a point to check up on his host and partner. "Hey Shnapa. That was a tough opponent there, but we were much stronger ! Feeling good ?"

"Whatever it is that's draining magic is worrying, but it's the unlife energy nexus that contributes to rendering Satroya so unlivable. If we destroy it first, perhaps the others could finally breathe more freely..."

"Any clue for the purpose of the magic drain? Is it simply draining it away, or possibly using it somehow or powering something?"

Eximius would like more information, if possible. If not, prioritize the nexus.

”Heh. Let’s destroy it, it offends my sensibilities. Both at trying to hunt us and to try emulating my method of Essence farming.”

Ulkas tapped a claw on chin and made a wide knowing smirk.

”Plus, I bet you’d be eager to test yourself after the new transformation, my Queen~”

We have gathered enough Essence, for now. Let Astrosa transform and we’ll see how we can fight an opponent of our caliber, for once.

Science is always important. But it needs more flaming cats. Can't we build bridge-based catapults and fling flaming cats at the dust and goo?

It's time for the ATHATH Death Counter to increase once more in celebration for the end of the world.
