How did you discover Dwarf Fortress?
« on: September 30, 2017, 07:42:30 am »

Guess I should start from the beginning.

Back when I was very young, there was this game called "Cultures 2: Northland". It was quite complex for a game that has been created in early 2000s. I was so amazed that it blew my mind. I could go as far as to call it the DF of the 2000s. Just to give few examples:

a) Each person (viking) in your settlement is an unit of its own, with the needs like hunger, sleep, talk and faith. Most of them are civilians that can become things like farmers, scouts or extractors (person who gathers goods like stone, wood, clay and mushrooms).

b) A civilian becomes a farmer. After they hit 100% exeprience, you unlock the mill. 100% exp there and you get the bakery and the well, since you need flour and water to make bread. Some 100% exp later you unlcok three buildings: upgraded bakery where you can make cakes (more effective than bread and hunger time is reduced), beehive and brewery where you make mead (which is basically a unit of food you can eat two times).

Few years later, I found Minecraft. After that, terraria.

In short, I started to like these sandbox-type games.

So one day of this year I went to tv tropes and then... WTF? What the hell is Dwarf Fortress? I give the page a read and then I see it...

Boatmurdered.

And from that day, I started playing Dwarf Fortress.

This would be better suited for the "DF General Discussion" forum up top. This forum is basically for generally anything, while that forum is for generally anything DF-related.

EDIT: Myself, I actually found out about DF from this xkcd comic.

I'm not sure where I first heard of it, but Boatmurdered was the biggest reason I actually played.

Pretty sure I first noticed it mentioned in or around some roguelike forum or another, or at least in discussion about one. Couldn't say which, 'cause it was over a decade ago and blazes if I remember at this point, though.

But probably that. Was around the tail-ish end of the days where I was still managing to play pretty much everything RL that came out or had currently existed, at least a little, iirc. DF's occasional classification tussle vis a vis roguelikes would have had me trip over it sooner or later.

Bored searching that actually lead at first to slaves of armok: god of blood. Which I thought was confusing and kinda eh, I checked not that much longer and while looking through toadys other games as a bored and poor college student I found this part of the board.

I probally should of registered back then so I could feel as old as I do hanging around here, I remember registering because I wanted to comment of a few silly things that were starting to explode but I'd been lurking for years already by then.

I found it listed as an inspiration for Minecraft, then read that it was 2D and ASCII and went "Nope."

A year or so later, I read the same thing and decided to try it anyway. The version was 34.7, and I was hooked.

I haven't played for a long time though, too any games, too little time...

It was either a joke about Boatmurdered or the carp that first piqued my interest.  I think Three Panel Soul may have come up as well.  I did not actually start playing for a while thereafter, however.

I think I found Dwarf Fortress after a night of TVTropes reading. It was a good find.
