How do I prevent my soldiers from picking up my woodcutting axe?
« on: September 29, 2017, 06:13:38 pm »

I have my soldiers set to pick up any weapon they want, and they grabbed both my axes. I'm about to make another with my only bronze bar, but I don't want another dwarf without a weapon to pick up up. How can I reserve it for my woodcutter?

Wait until the woodcutter is holding the axe before setting soldier's weapons. He won't ever put it down and the soldiers won't take it from him until he's dead.

define a second axe in your raws - woodsdwarf axe perhaps - and now you can make one of those, and a zillion steel battleaxes, and have your military use battle axes not the other

You'd probably need to generate a new world. A reaction for the existing adventure mode stone axe might work better.

I'd put that woodcutter in his own squad and assign him that axe as a weapon. But it could be that this would not work. He might put that axe aside when he is not on military duty.

Nagidal's proposal does not work: A dorf with both a military uniform and a civilian "uniform" uses one tool/weapon for the military uniform and a second one for the civilian one. In general, you'll get all kinds of trouble trying to assign wood cutters, miners, and hunters to the militia, although it MIGHT be possible to get it to work if you know *exactly* what you're doing (or have a lot of luck).

As mentioned, making sure the wood cutter gets the axe before any militia is assigned to compete for the weapon is one method. Another method is to assign a specific (non axe) weapon type to the competing militia (it doesn't matter if you don't have any weapons of that type, and you can change it back to "take whatever you like" after the wood cutter has claimed the tool of trade).
A third alternative is to disband the militia squad and recreate it after the wood cutter has picked up an axe.

This option is the easiest if you assigned one uniform to your entire squad (maybe you chose the "metal armor" uniform when you created the squad). Just remove the weapon from the uniform, assign the uniform to the entire squad, wait for them to drop the axes and for the woodcutter to take one, then re-add the weapon to the uniform, and assign the uniform to the entire squad again.

I have a question... If you have a woodcutter in your squad and you assign then a uniform with a weapon that is not an axe -- and do *not* assign a shield... will they keep their axe around with them and just dual wield? Given our previous discussion about the surprisingly non-sucky performance of dual wielding, that might be a nice option for woodcutters (I'm thinking large dagger as the assigned weapon would be awesome).  Not great defensively against unarmed opponents, but if their dodge is high enough, might be OK.

No they won't. Those two (axe+over clothes and different weapon+over clothes) are different uniforms, and you can only wear 1 uniform at time.

Won't assigning the soldier a new specific axe make him drop the one he took from the wood cutter? I switch weapons between my soldiers all the time.

The problem wasn't that the soldier took the woodcutter's designated wood cutting axe, but that he took the last axe. Thus, you'd have to assign the soldier a different kind of weapon to release the axe to the wood cutter (or no weapon at all).

It is always simpler, faster and less problematic to just a assign a specific weapon to each fighter-dorf individually, otherwise you will be having an issue with axes and pickaxes being used as weapons - or as tools - at all the wrong times. If you really can't make a spear or sword for your military just yet, then make sure they don't have a weapon assigned at all, and they will train in unarmed skills. Otherwise you'll not get any trees felled or mines dug with the military taking all the tools for weapons.
