Bard army?

I have 2 bards in my fort which are now apart of it.Can I inlist them in my army?If so how.

Yes, need to wait for them to petition a second time after two years so that they'll join your fort as citizen.

Just make sure to equip them with bag pipes to instill the maximum amount of terror in their enemies...

And naturalized citizens can lead squads, which mercs can't.

Well, joking aside, the main reason of using bards is, they usually have random combat skills, like the mercenaries.
Besides, they can become permanent residents, unlike the mercenaries.

Mercenaries become permanent residents, just not citizens (apparently) so can't lead squads.
They do come with their own gear though so you don't have to muck about making stuff in their size.

I mean, you can send the bards out in their own gear too if you like but it usually doesn't work out as well...

It's rare that merc stuff has steel or quality, so you'll have to make gear anyway eventually.

With citizens, can apply labours, so they're useful for more than just cannon fodder.

Scholars are perhaps the best long-term, always having Student skill and discussing in library till they join as citizens, but they're also rarer.
