I never used Discord, not to mention that the focus of the game is on written word, not speech.
IRC is as simple as you can get, can be launched from a browser, I can keep logs and don't have to worry about control over the chat either - unless I am convinced it benefits the game to have it on Discord.

The core of the game will always be in here however, IRC s simply an auxiliary tool.

Oh, right, Discord supports voice. I wasn't suggesting we actually use our mouths- how uncouth.
Anyway, Discord is, like, super easy to use. It can be run in a browser, and it keeps logs going back for months (at least). And... well, it looks better than IRC, and has numerous little features that make it more pleasant to use (in my experience).

I put a dicebot in there, figured it'd be useful. Anything else you might want to add/change can probably be done fairly easily.
And, not to harp on this, but it just looks nicer than IRC. Don't get me wrong, looks aren't everything. But it is a tie-breaker, innit?

Bio:
Mavi is an invaluable pariah of the court. Chief Servant and Master of the Hall, his is the highest position one can hold without the prerequisites of blood or wealth.
He is known for being both insouciant and accomodating, a possibly welcome relief from a line of unrepentantly stuffy and aggrandised butlers before him. Regardless, this has made him a fountain of information as the lives of every servant and maid in the palace wends its way through his fingertips.
The uninformed would call him a gossip, the wealthy refer to him as a rumorbroker, whilst those in power know him by his role of Spymaster to the king.

Whilst his casual air and vaguely amorphous loyalty has probably saved him from the knife so far, considering the 'worst kept secret' of his profession, his recent promotion has shown itself to be a lethally transparent job.
There is rumour that he has been frantically grooming other servants to take over his responsibilities, so he can fall into working retirement peacefully.
That being said, he still retains many skills from his heyday, and has been referred to as "the knife knight" or "the king's crossed fingers" by less appreciative onlookers.

It does look nicer, although some IRC clients - KiwiIRC, for one - on the web are also honestly fine looking. Part of the issue is that quite a few of the people involved in the old games / in designing this one are plain old used to IRC, and keep logs there. The logs are also eternal and undying, and you can get a fair bit of customization if you use downloadable IRC clients.

Honestly, I can understand not wanting to let us stuffy old people living in the past hold everyone else back, but I would personally prefer to stick to IRC for convenience, if the only argument in favor of Discord is the look.

Sidenote: I think Discord's 'scroll up' log system is really inconvenient for talk-intensive sessions, makes it hard to find something specific once the game's been going for a few weeks. KVIRC and other IRC engines like IceChat keep logs by date, and if you're really in a hurry you can even search for a specific line of text. That's on top of being saved locally and as such lasting forever.

Discord also has a very useful search feature that can be used to sift through the logs if you know what you're looking for. Even if you don't it can get you incredibly close with the use of keywords.

I've never used IRC, and only recently started using discord. It has a great deal of functionality and ease of use. I managed to be able to use it right of the bat and came to understand most of it's functionality through just using it. It was both easy and natural.

As far as actual retention of logs, as far as I can tell, discord doesn't delete anything and you can use the search function to find anything and everything dating all the way back to the first post. However I have not been in any discord threads with years of use or millions of posts, so I cannot speak as to the true height of its data retention.

https://kiwiirc.com/ is sleek and stylish. Web-based gold standard. Its only downside against Discord (if you're not using voices) is that it doesn't keep logs as far as I know. KVIRC also works fairly well, but needs a download and doesn't look fantastic if you don't bother to customize it. It keeps logs by date, like I said.

Neither of them keep logs for people who weren't connected at the time, although honestly I'm not sure that's a big downside. We'll be posting game logs, and sometimes it can be good for casual discussion to stay, so to say, off the record. Not that anyone will be scheming, or anything.

The decision to use IRC is motivated mainly by the ability to roleplay some of the stuff in real time and by log-keeping, as Shoot said.

Like stated before, do not feel obliged to join or use the chat, but it will streamline some of the things we had problems with in previous games.

I consider that a fairly substantial downside, frankly. The ability to go back and read things that happened whilst you were gone is well useful.
I mean, if you want something to stay off-record on Discord, you could either message someone one-one, or if you've multiple folks involved, get a mod to set you up with a channel, and give you and your co-conspirators roles with access to it.

Also, IRC doesn't allow periods in nicknames.

Without turning this into a technical discussion about Discord vs IRC,  but either chat cannot be held valid without GM present, which is the point of having a game.

I will try to work things for a proper start this weekend, so do not hesitate with your apps!

Tack, your app looks good, if a bit too on the nose with the spying... but hey, at least you have an archetype narrowed down so you know what you'll be playing!
