Yeah, I was actually going to ask for a design, so if this is fine to all involved, then that's what it'll be.

If you were to do attempt this by yourself you'd have a lot of trouble (as you aren't versed in the use of magic circles) however since you'll have the arbitrator to help you with the experiment (and any other mages who wish to assist) you'll be fine.

I'd imagine the other players could do whatever they want until the next intermission post happens, maybe they could be the leaders of the tax collectors, goblin bribers, or aqueduct construction workers so that these plans are more effective? They lost their free time spent on researching whatever they spell they wanted to research, but they make the government actions more effective, because their is a wizard who acts as the leader and organizer?

Sure, I think that that would be fine. If players would prefer to participate in government actions during their allotted research time, they very well could. This, if it is appropriate, may make things go more smoothly. It may also allow for more control over situations that may arise.

However it means less magic research will be done during the interlude.

Character Name: Lewald Gogoth

Character Description: Young, energetic and eccentric, Always well dressed in public but at his workshop he cares more about his projects than he does his appearance. Blond with green eyes that shine when he is engrossed in his work.

Background: Enchanted by magic from a young age Lewald tried to develop it in secret for a couple of years. Unfortunately his studies where found out when he acidentally activated what he was working on and it broke down a door. He eventually found his way to a place to truly advance, if he hadn't invented most of what he did by scratch. One of his dreams was of flight and thus some of his projects are targeted towards that.

Magic Start: Elemental

Your submission is fine darkgamer. But we may have to work to pin down your starting field. So magic in this game runs on shapes. Here's an example to give you an idea of a moderately complex spell.

Ice cube spell: You would start with a magic circle to store mana from the caster. You would connect that to triangle which can hold and direct energy. Triangles are used mostly in elemental magic, as they can be set to different elements, in this case you'd focus it to be in tune with water. This charges the mana to be water related. From there the mana would then run through another line into a square, which are used to do some of the finer elements of spellwork. In this case it would be to cool the water into ice. From there you'd have two lines leading out. One would be for the waste heat that is removed and it would probably go to a triangle or circle to remove it from the system (not doing so would cause the spell to become less efficient and over heat, perhaps catastrophically). The other would lead to another square which would orientate the ice to form into cubes. That square would lead to a circle which would be filled with the ultimate result of the spell: "Water cooled into ice formed into cubes". In the end, you'd have a circle filled with icecubes.

It would look like O-|>-[]-[]-O not including the heat release section.

Now that isn't an extremely difficult spell to pull off, as the actual energy required is fairly low. The process to achieve it however is moderately complex, requiring at least 6 components.


Soooo that's sort of how magic works. In a lot of ways those shapes are runes and if thats what you're intending on specializing in then thats fine. Buuuut if you think of runes in a different way, we may have to come up with a different way to work that in. Magic isn't strictly limited to shapes, and is more about creating a process which makes sense, so there is room to expand it into a similar system that has a different language. Like computer programing, there are lots of languages, but they ultimately can create the same results.


Side note to existing players:
when you are conducting research during the interlude, make sure you are stating how you intend for a spell to work. If you simply say "Research how to make fire" thats not really a good experiment as I have no idea how you are intending to achieve your goal. So make sure you explain how you intend for your spells to work, otherwise they probably won't.

That's fine, I'll change it to something else. I guess I must have missed the magic explanation. I'll probably start with elemental magic. And I can improve with different magic later, right?

Right... Thanks... Forgot to go over it now that I'm not suffering from sleep deprivation...

Edit: Alright... There, still not proud with it, will likely continue going over it if time permits, but good enough if it doesn't, I guess...

The same as shadowclaws character Yourboy. So triangles and how to tune them to different elements. It's not a lot, but triangles are very unique shapes. You may want to fiddle a bit and try to pick up other shapes, or work with someone IC to pick up what their characters know.

I should probably try to learn how to draw lines.

I mean I can work on water conjuration once I learn how to do that.
