The winter that ended my fortress...
« on: February 10, 2008, 03:49:00 pm »

In but one year, seven brave dwarves builded a large, prospering outpost for all other mountainhomes to envy! They exported glass, stone crafts and fabled hides of the most vicious creatures... but one day, it all ended.
Autumn was about to end, and the seven dwarves had just finished a grand party honoring their captain, Lodan. It was so grand, in fact, that every barrel of booze  was emptied to the bottom.
When winter arrived, the river, their source of water in times of need, froze.
Not fully realising what was going to happen, the seven dwarves carved more crafts, created more glass and hunted for more creatures. But as the dwarves became thirsty, they found nothing to drink.
Quickly, the dwarves went out to gain wathever plants they could get for brewing.
Then, the dwarves returned to the still.
But with only one still, and a unexperienced dwarf leading it, beer could only be created sparsly. Even worse, there was a shortage of barrels.
And so, the carpenter builded one and ran to the still.
Ironically, just as the booze dripped into the barrel and the carpenter was on his way to the dining room, he died. Out of thirst...
5 dwarves followed. The last one, who drank his own brewed beer, became insane, and started haunting the large halls of the once great fortress of Wealthcraft...

I felt my carpenter's death was so ironic, I had to post this      :D
Anyone else who has a similar story?

Did you just post a bunch of vegi-dicks on my board?  I've been trying to combat forum devolution a bit, and that involves fewer vegi-dicks!

Yes, random is funny, isn't it? Sometimes I set up a random number generator when I need a good laugh.

I never have this. If I, for some reason, can't/won't grow crops to brew with, I always make a large water resevoir.

I have to agree with aha:
Always bring a professional Brewer with you!  :D

But I had the same problem, back in the 2D days, when I was a complete noob.

Just remember: Booze is for dwarves as gasoline is for cars! ^_^

I had something similar happen before I discovered the value of booze.

My first task with any fortress is to get the most valuable plant brewing for booze to meal conversion. Meals are my main trade good.

You're crazy. I never trade food. It's too valuable to me, you never know when something like the first post will happen.

I actually disallow every kind of booze for cooking as I get it. Cooking booze just feels wrong.

True; I always make sure to keep about 2k food and 500 booze in reserve while trading masterwork muskox tallow roasts for more chain and plate mail than my armies can wear.

If I were a dwarf, I would actually enjoy the idea of not only being able to get drunk by drinking, but also by EATING  :D
Semi-offtopic: I think I read somewhere that the fruit in a (real-world) fruit punch has the tendency to suck up all the alcohol. This means that you wont feel much effect from drinking the punch, but the effect is much better from consuming the fruit! Yay!

Cooking booze isn’t really as wrong as it is glitched. I personally feel you shouldn’t be able to make a Roast out of 4 barrels of dwarven wine, However you should be able to make a roast with say, 1 meat product, 1 vegetable product, 1 threshed/milled product, and 1 booze product. It would limit size, and increase variety in the dwarven diet. Booze is an essential part of flavoring, especially wine.
