So I decided I wanted to know...
« on: October 31, 2007, 07:34:00 pm »

Just how many rocks I had in my fortress. And not just rocks, but how many of EVERYTHING.

I disabled all of my Clerk's other professions, and told him to give me a perfect count.

He worked through autumn.
He worked through winter.
He worked through most of spring, and somewhere in there he became a Legendary Record Keeper.

Who was Mighty. And Perfectly Agile. And Tough. From WRITING DOWN NUMBERS. This perplexed me, until reason kicked in:

This dwarf didn't have paper. Or a pencil. He's been digging his numbers into BARE ROCK.

With his FINGERS.

He is, in fact, GROG, NEANDERTHAL ACCOUNTANT. That is one hardcore filing clerk.

*Glances over.* Grog. Would you be so kind as to do a count of our enemies? *Watches as the burly dwarf flies off into an enemy squad, limbs flying.*

But... do they ever stop bookkeeping once they start? I re-enabled many other tasks, but, of course, Melbil seems content to keep sitting around "working" on records that show as already at Highest Precision.

Is it possible that the time spent bookkeeping is related to how high the precision is set to?  I have mine set to Medium (no real need to go higher for the time being) and my treasurer hardly ever works on the books.

I believe the "bookkeeper keeps working once highest level attained" is a bug.  It's been reported as such a few times.

Can some-one help me find where to give that command "to get a better count" ?

I can not seem to find it. (Though I'm sure it is close and I'm just missing it.)

Thanks

He doesn't just have to work to get counts at highest precision, he has to work to *keep* them at highest precision once they get there. Use common sense; for a grocery store manager, once you take an accurate inventory, your grocery store doesn't forever more know how much of everything you have. It takes work to keep the shelves stocked. Imagine if a supermarket tried to keep track of exactly how many items were on each shelf at all times.

For every seed planted, every ale drunk, every craft carved, and every stone dug, he has to update that in the books! Keeping precise books of everything a fort does is a big job; with lower precision, you can reduce the amount of time spent in an "unnecessary" inventory.

I don't even enable the bookkeeping labor until I get more immigrants. It's not worth it at first.

They can, eventually, finish book-keeping, though even for a speed:1 dwarf, it takes quite a while... and that's with a mere six dwarves.  As mentioned, though, the keeper does have to go back to it, from time to time.

My bookkeeper always stops when he reaches perfect accuracy, but until he gets there he never stops.  If you want to interrupt his task, go switch the desired accuracy to lowest and he'll quit immediately.
