Draining a lake/murky pool
« on: October 31, 2007, 07:19:00 pm »

So I've got a couple of 7/7 (what does that even mean?) murky pools on my map. They don't appear to go below 0 (that is, I can dig at -1 under them and be fine), and I can drain these lakes by simply digging through the surrounding rock so that they flow out into the countryside.

Problem there is that all of the water drains out until they are just brown ~ Murky Pools. No more water movement, no more draining, but I can't dig in those tiles so I can't channel the water out or anything. Is this where screw pumps and the like come in? The damn thing sat exposed for a whole year and didn't even dry up. There doesn't seem to be a source for the water, it just sits on the surface forever.

AFAIK, you can't drain the murky pools any further.  You know, your dwarves will drink from the natural ponds, often from the diagonals from the pond edge.  Since wells are bugged, don't bother draining those little ponds -- In fact, as far as I can see, there's no compelling reason to move water around in this version.

Well, it's an open space, it would've been nice to build a little subterranean sun chamber just for the heck of it. It's a feat of engineering! It's fun.  ;) More than for any practical reason (and I originally started poking at these because I thought they did go down, and I wanted the area for chambering).

Anyway.. what's the well bug? And is the can't-drain-murky a bug or a feature right now?

The well bug is when you build a well in a pool (or on a slope apparently) the gam e will crash within minutes.  Toady already knows and it should be addressed in the next release.

The murky pool thing is still mysterious to me... it seems that these never completely dry out (?), even in high summer on a hot map.   I don't know whether or not they are drinkable either... seems kinda useless.
