Lockedaxe - The seige
« on: October 31, 2007, 04:32:00 pm »

They came in the night.

Our fort, "Tincouncil", was small yet prosperous. We had made no serious enemies; we traded well with Dwarf, Human, and Elf alike; and we had struck valuable minerals.

Then the goblins arrived. They struck late one night when the fort slumbered. They slaughtered all of us- or so they thought.

Seven survived. We awoke from our chamber, hidden deep within our mountain near a stream of magma, hidden so that marauding fire imps could not locate us, to find our companions dead, and a few goblins who had stayed behind from the horde to feast on the corpses.

In a rage, we fell upon them with axe and crossbow and even our bare fists, until they fled.

We have followed them here, to their infernal fortress. Here, we shall avenge our bretheren.

SETUP:

3x6 region. The leftmost 3x3 consists of a Goblin Fortress on a Haunted Mountain. The right 3x3 is normal woodland.

7 dwarfs. Each dwarf is given 4 skill points: 2 in normal skills, and 2 in 'military' skills (wrestling, crossbow usage, axe usage) with the exception of Unib Rakustag, the 'commander'. Unib uses a shield and an axe and has no non-military skills.

No anvil. Points from anvil spent on more weaponry (3 crossbows, many stacks of bolts, a shield), and horse meat. Remaining points spent on seeds.

And as a more personal restriction- none of the Goblin towers (there are 5 towers spaced apart slightly and with bases on different Z-levels) shall be undermined and collapsed. All shall be taken by force alone.

The journal of Unib "Tombsdaub" Rakustag, Awedwarf

I brought with me a small box that uses special chemicals to take images on paper, but as we journeyed here it fell from the back of our wagon and split in two. Reg Solamalath, our Mechanic, informed me that he could repair it, but it would take him some time to craft the delicate parts needed to repair the inside. As such, there shall be no images of our first few months.

We arrived here and took some time to scout the land. There are 5 large goblin towers to the west; each made out of unnaturally dark stone and decently high. Armok only knows how many of their slaves died constructing these foul buildings. To the east is a small stream, then a sudden (but short) cliff. We shall create our fort between the stream and the cliff.

We returned to our wagon and tried to move it, but one of its wheels slipped off the axle then. As such, we must build here.

We dig straight down into the ground, setting traps as we go. We dare not build anything large above the surface. We must be prepared, and we must be better-equipped. We shall not attack the foul monsters until each one of us is clad in heavy armor and using the finest weapon- and even then, we all know our chances are very poor.

A few pages of the journal are blank, then:

1st Hematite, 1051

Disaster nearly struck late last month. Onul Onulabod, our carpenter, was chopping wood when he came upon a dark gnome being killed by a wandering Goblin. The goblin saw Onul before returning to kill the gnome!

Upon telling me this, I took up my axe and my shield and went to the place. I ran into the goblin as it was returning to one of its cursed towers; the body of the gnome lay behind it. I had to kill it, else it would bring word of us to its comrades and doom us all.

Luckily, it was poorly armed. I deflected its feeble blows with my shield and smote it with my axe; striking so hard in my rage that it flew some distance before staggering away and collapsing into unconciousness, bleeding to death.

As I returned to our fort I spat upon its dying body. May they all suffer such a fate!

3rd Hematite

Reg has informed me that he repaired my Pictograph. As such, I shall record some images of our surroundings for any who come upon this journal.

Our wagon broke down to the west, at the bend in the river. The staircase there is the top entrance to our fort. We plan on building fortifications around it to better defend it.

Due west of the above image- one of the Goblin forts.

The goblin I killed. The mutilated body at the top of the image is the unfortunate Gnome it was butchering.

The main body of our fort. We have a still and kitchen set up to the north along with our food stockpile, and several workshops to the south.

Below, the rear entrance to our fort. Dastot Limultumam, our Mason, built a trade depot, but I cannot imagine any dwarf with any amount of sanity stopping long enough to trade.
