A Question
« on: April 22, 2008, 07:27:00 pm »

I'm early in my third year of this fortress, stupidity set in during the first year, and I was unable to buy anything(At all) from the first caravan.  My only Metalsmith went Fey before I got an anvil(EXPLETIVE).  End result-I have no skilled smiths, enough iron bars and ore to furnish the Persian army, and a tiny squad, completely unarmored, and armed with a single steel battleaxe that apparently fell from the sky or something.  The question:  Should I promote one of my peasants to Sooper-Smiff, or wait for Metalsmiths to come in a migration?

Just promote one. Any migrant smiths that come will, at most, if they come at all, will be just novice +1, and that's really easy to get. If you want to train a metalworker, it's much faster if you have only one dedicated armoursmith / weaponsmith with a myriad of metalsmiths. Don't ever try to get one smith to do everything or a bunch of smiths to do all the smithing work.

The hardest part about training a metalworker is the initial hump. Once you reach proficient, it's smooth sailing, but reaching proficient is the hardest part. And once they reach legendary... holy cowcrap... my legendary armour/weaponsmith could churn out masterwork weapons faster than my eyes could keep track of his movements.

lol, A few seconds ago I got a 20+migration, 6 of them were related to metal, and the very last one was an Armorsmith, now I have a bunch of Metalcrafters.  Oh well, Platinum Statues all around.
