I prefer building a large wall to keep them out.  To do so in good time, I conscript a bunch of useless dyers and cheese makers to carpentry or masonry.

Nah. But I did throw their corpses in my garbage dump. Of course, my dwarves didn't like that and murdered eachother to death.

I don't know whether to be proud or ashamed that I understood (and laughed at) that incredibly clever reference.

Population cap just stops immigration after the number, not pregnancies... At least from what I am told... I lag after 40 or so dwarves...

Urist Austin, Axedwarf.  A dwarf barely alive.  Gentledwarves, we can rebuild him. We have the technology. We have the capability to build the world's first bionic dwarf. Urist Austin will be that dwarf. Better than he was before. Better, stronger, faster.

oh come on, it was the coolest reference ever. Be proud.

I am finding that my fortresses get much less fun after the population passes 30. I can really understand where you're coming from. Just watch out for baby snatchers, they get a lot more meaningful in a game like this.

There is also an option in the init file that lets you control pregnancies by setting the children cap.
If you get bored with immigrants, try the hermit challenge.

Yes, that works!  Awesome, thanks!

Looks like after you get an immigrant wave that gets you over the population cap in the init file, you don't get any more waves (I haven't for a few years, at least), but you do still get children (I'm getting like two a month!!) if you didn't get rid of them via the separate option in the init file.  Sweet!

There's also an init file for it.

I'd try something like this, but I prefer to smash them or drop them 15 Z-levels.

You just won the internet as far as I am concerned.

I too like to view my seven dwarves as individuals and in fact give them all unique names and titles and allow them to become the core of my legendary army, but I don't think I could turn off immigration.

I like dealing with the damage it causes to my infrastructure.
