Challenge: "Immigrants Out!"?
« on: April 22, 2008, 12:50:00 pm »

Has anyone tried to play a game where immigration is turned off and stays off?  I'm experimenting with it right now--I actually had to turn immigration on because I needed haulers, and that's on top of a whole load of tweaks I've done to make this less mind-numbingly boring (plus some other stuff).

RELATED TWEAKS

  1. Population: Started with 15 dwarves.  Wasn't enough, due partly to some mistakes on my part.  You could do it with 7, I think, but it would be brutally S L O W.
  2. Meat, meat, everywhere: Almost everything is marked butcherable.  No elf pies yet, but it was wierd having a dwarf whose favourite food is worms.
  3. Child Labour... I mean, "Apprenticeships": Kids haul as soon as they can walk.
  4. Winter Feasts: In an effort to promote relationships (and create haulers) all labour except Farming and Food Hauling is turned off.  Everyone parties.
  5. Fertility Treatments: Dwarves have [LITTERSIZE:1:3].  The only producing couple I have now have a set of child twins and a set of baby triplets.
  6. Nice and Quiet: Invasions off, because I suck at the military aspect and I didn't want to be annoyed by invaders while I'm trying to micromanage this mess.

LESS RELEVANT TWEAKS

  1. Nudists: I finally stuck with a fort long enough to run into the discarded clothes problem, and it drove me nuts.  My dwarves do not own or use clothing--neither do goblins.  Dwarves have the same temperature resistance as polar bears in this scenario.  I actually didn't realize doing this turns off clothing manufacture, which means I wasted a dwarf on Weaver/Clothier--who cares if you can make awesome bags?
  2. Goblin Weapons: Goblins have their own (identical) named weapons--should make it easier to get rid of them when I finally turn on invasions.  I'm particularly proud of calling the morningstar a "goblin butcherball."  Nice ring to it.

Biggest problem has been getting Lovers to marry.  I've only had one set get hitched, but 80% of my dwarves are matched up with somebody.  Any thoughts on ways to make them take the plunge?

I'm doing this currently.  Except I'm setting up the fortress to eventually allow more than my current 11 residents.

Year 11 so far.  I've got room for 116 peasants, and 8 nobles (so far, I've got a second Z-level of bedrooms that I haven't even touched yet).  Also will have crypts for 392 corpses once I finish off the crypts on the first Z-level (just double it for the overall corpse threshold).

Right now I'm mostly focusing on traps.  I'm going the overkill route with 10 large, serrated steel discs per weapon trap, 21 weapon traps per entrance funnel and 4 separate entrances.  Since I would eventually like to create the most awesome zoo known to Dwarvenkind, there's two sets of cage traps set in front of the weapon traps, so Megabeasts will be mine.

Lock them in a room with food, drink, and nothing to do for a season or two, and they should breed like rabbits.  If I were stuck in that situation, that's what I'd do.

Add a statue garden so they will party. If they develop a grudge pull them out so they don't get unhappy and kill each other.

Dwarves with grudges should be given living quarters on opposite sides of an arena pit.  Lock 'em in there and set up a meeting zone or hall in the center of the pit.  Drop food and drink in periodically.  They should eventually please the crowd above.  Just takes time.

I never turn migration on. I just take off Multiple litter rare and have my dwarves populate the fort.

I always do this, I turned off immigration as soon as I worked out how to after I lost forts thanks to the population exploding before I could cope with it.

I like looking after my seven dwarves as individuals in anycase, digging out individual rooms and such. I still count myself a novice and still learning the ins and outs of the game.  :p I tend to leave my dwarves to do their own hauling, they've all still got all types enabled and such, which probably makes them rather inefficent, but what the hey. I'll carry on working out actually how to craft stuff before I start figuring more efficient ways of doing things, and keeping more dwarves alive at the same time.

My military skills suck too, I end up drafting unarmed dwarves to deal with kobold thieves and stuff.

The trick is to get a pair of male and female elephants from the elves, then you let them reproduce a couple times and chain the grown children up just outside your entrance.

Stupid question...

How do you turn off the immigration? I get how to increase the odds for more stone ha- err I mean children... but how do I keep the immigration from coming in?

Yes, how do you turn of immigration?  Without turning off pregnancies as well via population_cap?  I'd really like to be able to do this type of challenge...

Personally, I just smash unwanted immigrants with a solid gold bridge.
