So, my dwarf wants a shell...
« on: April 20, 2008, 10:43:00 pm »

My dwarf has been possessed (third dwarf today) and has taken my mason place over. >.> He is demanding stone, shell, and bones. I have the stone, and live animal I could get bones from, but no shells or turtles. Is there anyway to cancel this or do I have to just let him sit there until he goes mad?

I was in the middle of making golden statues, too. Then he booted my mason out. What a jerk.

If you've got water on the map, any water at all, you can fish for turtles.  Otherwise, just wait.

Why is your mason working with metal?

The easiest way I know of to immediately get turtle is to dig a hole somewhere and fill it with water, then fish there. It should only give you turtle (but it takes quite awhile). Then forbid every other piece of food until someone eats it.

You should have at least a season or so to get it done, so take your time.

Wait a second, that's a good question... Why is he working with metal? He also made my Platinum Doors.

Your may be working with the ore of metals in which case they are using the stones that can be smelted into metals.  Although usually those are economic stones that are only reserved for their reactions.

AFAIK for moods, the dwarves will sometimes grab ores.

E.g. one of my artifacts is a Native Silver mechanism studded with Magnetite; usually native silver is reserved for making silver bars (and magnetite for iron).

The last time this happened to me I made nearly every dwarf a fisher and let them go until I saw turtles.  Once I got some turtles I forbade every other piece of food except the turtles.  I also took turtles off the cooking menu, because I recall reading that cooked turtles do not produce shells.

And now I always highly request turtles and cave lobster from any traders that come by and always buy them out so that I keep a nice chunk of shell on hand.  Too many "strange mood" dwarves demand shell to not keep a stock of them.

I have the same problem- I've had at least three dwarfs go crazy because even though my map has turtles on it the three fisherdwarfs have never actually caught one.

The only way I could get round it was to order turtles through the trade liason.

One thing you must do is go into your status screen and turn off cook for turtles, AFAIK cooking turtles does not create a shell...

They aren't that hard to find. Just dig a hole in the ground, fill it with water and fish in it. You'll pull out nothing but turtley goodness and soon be flooded with them.

It's not too hard to find turtles but it's tough to keep a sufficient stock. I had one mood where the crafter required 4 shells. Forbidding all food other than turtles helps but is a pain to do if your farmers, herbalists and fisherdwarves keep hauling in more food.

Couldn't hurt to bump this thread.  http://www.bay12games.com/cgi-local/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic&f=5&t=003202   ;)

What?
Dig a hole in the ground, fill with water and I get an indoor food supply?

Yes, yes! It'll last about one season's worth of fishing and depending on your dwarf's skill, should have around 20-100 turtles inside.

Yeah, in my old place my top mason was cranking out native platinum statues, because it's like the only ore we had there.  Let's see, will I smelt three pieces of ore into bars and make those three bars into a crappy quality platinum statue, or just make three superior-to-masterwork statues that are worth a crapload more?  No fuss, no muss, no coal.

As a long-term plan, create an indoor shell-only refuse stockpile, and forbid shells from the other refuse piles.  That way all the shells you produce will be saved.  I find a stockpile that holds 30-40 shells is plenty.  This pile can go almost anywhere, because shells don't rot, but somewhere near the dining room is most convenient.  When the stockpile is full and you notice shells being left on tables because there is no where else to put them, then you can tell a crafter to make 20 shell crafts (or helmets, gauntlets, whatever) to use up the excess.

I usually take a few turtles and lobsters with my starting food, immediately forbid them for cooking, immediately forbid storing the shells in the regular refuse stockpiles, and then set up the indoor shell stockpile as soon as I have space.  That way I'm guaranteed to have a few of both kind of shell in storage before the first mood hits.

Yeah, I've been burned by shellessness before.
