Another Custom Fontset
« on: February 08, 2007, 09:48:00 pm »

I made a 7x7 pixel font, originally so I could play at work with such a small window nobody could tell. (I used to play nethack with the 4x6 dos font =p). Well, I like it so much, that I now use it all the time at home as well!

Try it, love it, hate it, whatever, but here it is:

I will post a screenie or two whence I return home.

Yes, I prefer the ASCII to the tiles, for now. I don't want to make a true tileset until the game is a bit less likely to change, on the interface end.

Enjoy!

Edit: set your window to 560x175

I wonder, would this increase FPS?

Probably not.  DF, unlike almost all modern games, does not run slow because of processing graphics, but from processing the world itself.  Thus, nothing with regards to the graphics should cause either speed ups or slow downs.  It's just a couple of bitblts either way, which are pretty darn cheap, processor wise.

No, I notice no increase in FPS. I would not expect to. However, my boss doesn't notice DF. =D

Also, how bout adding a 'boss' key to the game... turns the display into ANYTHING that doesn't look like a game. Also, being able to have DF in the system tray instead of a normal taskbar item would help too...

DF, the next cause of unproductivity in the world. =p

For instance, porn would be fine.

But it would have to be ascii porn. Preferably with beards.

(Why do i have this urge to google that now? i swear toady, if this is your game's fault, ill take you to court  :) )

The font looks great but it's a bit too small  :(

Still gonna try it out tho.

The font looks great; I'll probably try this, but set the window to stretch by a factor of 2 or 3, since I don't have a boss to worry about.

I have a 12x12 pixel font in the works as well, intended to run at 960x300. My monitor only supports 1024x768 (my puter's weakest link), so for now I won't create a larger font.

I use square tiles (7x7, 12x12) instead of the 10x12 or 8x12 of the normal curses proportions; I need everything square, it makes it easier to tell what's what.

And a map of the overall fortress, a bit shrunk down, but gives you a good overall view:

Its pretty cool, it even inspired me to create my own font (16x16 tiles, based on the Sylfaen font), though mine doesn't look as pretty. (Its comfortable though. Even though its kind of funny to read)

But what do I know?
Everything I say should be taken with atleast 1 tsp. of salt, and another liter of Dwarven Wine is recommended.

Heh, the font in my title bar is Sylfaen. Play Civ IV much? =p

Edit: notes

I created the font in Photoshop (6, why get a newer one? since multiple undo's in 4, no upgrade is really needed) There are 6 layers (and maybe a temporary layer or two). There are four art layers, a black layer (so I can see when designing), and a magenta layer, to save with the final file. The four art layers are:
Objects (top two rows and bottom two rows)
Walls (the 3 wall rows)
-this is in TWO layers, checkerboarded so the effects apply to each individual tile, not the connected tiles.
Text (everything else, rows 3-11)

I can create a template for others to use, at any size, if so requested.

Heyas,

I tried Herrbdog's font here and the colours are all vastly dulled or the fonts don't appear at all.

Can someone please help me get the same square look (and full windowed: 1680x1050)??

I've tried the curses 16x16 to no luck to (the way I've been experimenting is changing all the *x* references in the init file, and of course, updating all references to the font file).

Ta!

"Boss Key" edition; have it start looking like a cmd prompt console. Get the boss key to bring up ipconfig info, and you can always say you were having network trouble.

Very cool 6x6 tileset! I'll try it when I get home, and perhaps scale my own 12x12 set down and see what it looks like. I'm not sure I'm a fan of the bevelling, but the idea of running the game quiet in the background is neat.

Very well done tileset as always. I wished I would have thought about a custom size before I worked on mine (I play at work also). The table and chair tiles look nearly identical, why? Also the gradient textures (catapult, partially mined rock) do not tile well.

Wow, I did this one a while ago. It's actually 7x7, not 6x6.

This does need a little tweaking I think. It is good, but not perfect.   ;)

The tables and chairs are similar because I kept the same style for all of the 'wall' tiles, which the table and chair are part of. The 'narrow' border is 3 pixels wide, the 'wide' border is 5 pixels wide. They are close, but still distinguishable. The tiling on the gradated tiles is difficult to make even, because 7 is a prime number so to make a consistent gradation is tricky.

Anyway, glad you guys like it. Once RL slows up for me a bit, I will have my finished new 256 (16x16), and 49 (the 7x7). Also I have creature tiles in the works.

This is my elephant, if you havent seen it:
