Does your depth influence what kind of ore you'll find? I can't find anything but malachite and non-ores on this otherwise perfect map, and I'm WAY too deep into the game to restart. I'm on a medium altitude map (judging from the graph on the starting area selection screen)  :)

I think it's influenced by what type of stones you have.

Anyway don't give up, you can trade for most (all?) types of metal bars now, so you can just import all that metal you need.

I'm so stupid.

I forgot that magnetite makes iron, and thus magnetite and malachite can make me all the steel I could want.

Yay!

Does microline make anything? I can't find any reference to it in with the other "economic minerals", but it noted that I had "Struck microline!" when I came across a chunk of it in my living quarters.

no, but it's a pretty blue color.

you get a struck message every time you find something that isn't one of the base rock types listed on the embark screen. one message per mineral per level - if you find microcline on level 5 and then find another deposit, you'll only get the message for the first, but if you go to level 6 and find more microcline, you'll get another message.

Although microcline doesn't do anything I would love to be able to limit its use. And the use of all the pretty different colored rocks. Just to make the multicolored fortress.

Minerals that are useful for reactions and/or making stuff are all listed if you press z and go to economic stones (or something like that). You can toggle them on/off whether to allow dwarves to use them for making buildings and crafts out of.

jack johnson, raider has been shot and killed.

The above (including bbcode) neatly weighs in at 255 characters. Fallout meets DF

Indeed, but maybe the "useless" rocks should also be included in this screen, with their use enabled by default

Heh.  I'm on a huge granite mountain made of Galena and Silver.  Looks like I'm going to be selling lead mugs to the humans.  I wonder if I can cause them to be brain damaged?
