The many trials of "Spearhelms"
« on: April 20, 2008, 07:34:00 pm »

1054 in a 7x2 mountain/hills mix (part haunted part calm, temperate, tons of trees)... Total wealth: now slightly over 1.5 million stars.

I built my main entrance in a very well trapped funnel. or so I thought.

AMBUSH! 2 marksgoblins take  a caravan from a Z-level up. Thankfully the caravan shot back.

To rectify the situation, I construct a wall along the upper edge of the funnel.

SIEGE! They shoot through the walls (or over. I think they were just bow-goblins, not crossbow-goblins). Joy. My guys start to die. They get pwned by my traps. They also get pwned by the caravan.

I start constructing a trapped perimeter to prevent Skeletal Mountain Goats from scaring all my clearcutters and masons. And one wounded guy who slept inside the barracks, which was fortified. (It was weird, he kept getting up and running away from the goats with a broken leg... when he was inside a room (Although it did have fortifications...)

SIEGE!

At first it didn't seem that bad. Mostly hammer-goblins. Or so I thought. Instead, the hammer goblins started at one side, and marksgoblins and trolls started on the other.

A bunch are killed by my trapped perimeter. The hammer-goblins not so much.

Unfortunately they clear out the traps for the rest of the trolls.

Alright, lock the doors!

Wait, Trolls can knock down doors. Damnit.

So my three doors are summarily bashed in.

The four or five trolls left proceed to ransack my resource base: a farm, a mechanic's shop, a fishery, a mason's shop, and my Dungeon Master's room. He isn't going to be pleased at all.

Thankfully the trolls got confused when two wounder wrestlers started wandering back and forth into their line of sight, trapping them in the corridor with the DM's room.

So I draft everyone. All 75 remaining citizens. Even the ones with previous wounds. Whoops.

They proceed to stand by my well for a minute while the remain troll (Lurorakith, which I believe is something like CursedLimbs) wanders around.

Another stands on the body of a child near the farm.

Then I cancel some tasks and like twenty wrestlers clamber down the stairs to get at the troll.

Somehow a mace decapitated a troll.

Instagib.  I think the Macedwarf I had was to blame.

All in all in this battle?

Three named trolls. 8 total trolls. All dead. 12 or so dead goblins of varying professions.

6 dead citizens. Likely a few more going to die from wounds.

...

I am going to HATE seeing all of the "Task cancelled: resting injury" notifications.

On the upside, my massive smelting operations will now continue as planned. Unless all of the blacksmiths are dead. The bodies aren't quite sorted yet...

Thankfully, the last humans to die during a raid dropped a bunch of nice iron whips...

Now to reinforce my traps.

Edit:

Another guy died, of dehydration. I guess no one tended to him during the carnage.

A cheesemaker with a mangled chest went possessed. And twelve million plump helmet spawns were retrieved...

24 fps != fun.

Edit 2: I can't believe you went insane for this, cheesy.

Boardedechoed the Obstacle of Mists, a basalt idol.

This is a basalt idol. All craftsdwarfship is of the highest quality. It is encircled with bands of basalt and mountain goat bone. This object menaces with spikes of Goshenite and mountain goat bone. On the item is an image of squares in donkey leather.

This is worse than my recursive bronze chest (with images of bronze chests in iron on it) and the adamantine made with every single thing imaginable. (Worth about half of my fortress)

Losing is fun!

(and this should probably be in the stories folder)
