The old map
« on: February 29, 2008, 06:20:00 pm »

As nice as the current randomly generated Z-axis capable maps are, I have to wonder what it would be like to play on the OLD map with the NEW system. You know, the one with the bare cliffside that stretches for miles in one direction, the river outside, the cave river inside, the magma just past the chasm... all of that with a Z axis, with the seven segment water, with goblin sieges and giant Zombie eagles...

Anyone know how this could be done? Anyone else at least think this would be cool?

I bet if you looked hard enough, you could find a map very similar to that in the current version. Look for a brook directly adjacent to some *-level cliffs, and use dwarven prospector to check for magma and also Adamantite while you're at it.

...and when you DO find that, make sure to share the seed or upload the world to the wiki...   :)

It would be nostalgic. And I suppose it is theoretically possible for a map to be randomly generated with a similar setup.  But it would be like finding a needle in a haystack.

A really big haystack.  ...with a blindfold.

I already tried that. I did manage to find one with a regular river, volcano, adamantine, and chasm, but they're all spread out.

Its just not the same, and that took an hour.

I was hoping one of this forum's apparent millions of geniuses had already had the same thought and whipped up the code.

As I see it, there are a bunch of issues that would prevent the new version from creating anything too similar to the old version's level layout.  I haven't seen any cave rivers with waterfalls and I haven't seen any magma rivers.  Also, in the old version digging to the right represented digging deeper.  Now we go down z-levels to do that.

Hi!

Okay, I do not have any map that is perfectly the way the old map was. However, I used the prospector and tried to find candidates for this. I am a slow player, so there is no use in me testing the maps, since before I have verified where the magma and chasm in all of them lie, we will probably have full-motion 3d graphics in DF.

Therefore, I am sharing screenshots of the most interesting candidates here in the hope that someone might be willing to investigate one or two of them.

I also included a few without wood and without a surface river figuring that there may be some players feeling comfortable with that (glacier players).

All these screenshots were taken from "The Future Realms", seed 137153163, 257x257. I also uploaded the region directory at the DFFD.

Hi!

I am sorry. I always settle in rather friendly areas (forests and so on), so I never come across areas that can't be embarked on (the deep mountain ones, it seems). This is why I forgot to check for embarkability.

I have removed the shots of the faulty locations. Fortunately, there are still some usable ones left and maybe one of them is something people can work with.

I am really sorry about that mistake. I honestly just wanted to be helpful.

I had a cave river with a waterfall in a chasm twice/thrice. Someone said he has never seen it... Really? You missed the fun of seeing a lot ot river invaders falling into the chasm.

Anyway you can find the place with it by adventurer: sometimes you see "olmsman falls into the chasm" x10, it actually means there're river+chasm nearby =).

DEAR GOD. I am using that seed. So many of those maps are epic. I might not get the old map, but I will certainly be getting a lot of very high quality regular ones. Thanks you man. Thanks you.
