I was thinking more along the lines of....

code:
Side View, not to cat scale
                                        WW
                                        WW
                                        WW
                   W                    WW
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~     WWW    WWWWWWWWWWWWWW WW
WWWWWWWWWWWWW~    WWWWW  WWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWW
           W~___WWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWD
           W~    WWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWF
           W~     WWW    WWWWWWWWWWWWWWW~
           W~             WWWWWWWWWWWWW ~ (note that river flows between
           W~              WWW      WWW ~  the legs, and not shown here is
           W~              WWW      WWW ~  trade ramps from either side of
           W~              WWW      WWW ~  the upper river down to either
           W~              WWW      WWW ~  side of the tongue)
           W~~~~~~~~~~~~~~CWWW~~~~~CWWW~~~~~~~~~~
           WWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWW
Legend
------
W = Wall
~ = Water/Waterfall
D = Dump
F = Floodgate
_ = Tongue Drawbridge
C = Claw Weapon Traps
code:
Top view Entrance Demonstration(again, not strictly to scale)
.....>>>>
.....>>>>
.....>>>>
~~~~~w___E
~~~~~w___E
~~~~~w___E
.....>>>>
.....>>>>
.....>>>>

. = ground at top of cliffs
~ = river
w = waterfall
> = cunning ramps for trade wagons

shown, but several Z-levels below
E = Cat Entrance
_ = Cat Tongue Drawbridge

It's really disappointing you can't put wheels on this.

I can't help but think of this as some crazed Dwarven war machine, like the one used in the siege of Troy.

Will the cat have ears?

With the tongue extending into the waterfall like that, you could make part of your fortress inside the cliff, behind the mist.

With any luck the goblins will come looking for my fortress and instead drag the trojan kitty back to their own. Then the slaughter will begin.

And yes, the cat will have two noble's rooms roughly where the ears should be with little balconies/headroof access.

Like my trader entrance/ramps, thus removing my scaffolding from the cliff face. I like it! Only problem is that in my example the tongue doesn't quite reach the cliff face, so I don't have to worry about water landing on the tongue where my dwarves/traders are walking...I'd need some serious ingenuity to handle both trade wagons and diverting the water from my.......waaaaaait....have a second "umbrella" drawbridge one z-level above...the tongue is two z-levels high...traders and dwarves enter THROUGH the tongue, water is lapped up UPON the tongue. Hot damn that's brilliant.

New entrance design: (again, kitty not to scale)

code:

                                        WW

           W~    WWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWF
           W~     WWW    WWWWWWWWWWWWWWW~
           W~             WWWWWWWWWWWWW ~ (note that river flows between
           W~              WWW      WWW ~  the legs, and not shown here is
           W~              WWW      WWW ~  that the upper river origin, or
           W~              WWW      WWW ~  alternatively the access ramps
           W~              WWW      WWW ~  come from perpendicular to diagram)
           W~~~~~~~~~~~~~~CWWW~~~~~CWWW~~~~~~~~~~
           WWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWW

Legend

W = Wall

I suggest you put some 'bait' at his toes where the weapon traps go. Gold or cheap stone crafts or meat. Something to draw kobold thiefs and/or rhesus monkeys.

Some of those fractal designs would work well visually for the brain, if you could fit enough in there.

I also suggest building one level of the legs out of supports, and building yourself a big red button that _must_ _not_ _be_ _pushed_. Every elaborate evil lair needs a self-destruct device.

Then some adventurer runs in, is like "Hey, a red button!"

That would, of course, be their last words.

It seems that all you would need for this would be a chasm to drain into and you win. This rocks so hard.

If you needed to expand outside the cat you could make bowls (one for food storage and one filled with water like previously suggested) toys and all kinds of things.

Thoughts of the day...

As I see it there are two main ways to pull off this design.

i/ excavate the lower cliffs(you could dig OUT the cat while you were at it, but that's optional), and drain the lower river into a chasm as mentioned.

ii/ Use the original river level for the lower river, and pump that sumbitch up a mountain near its source, diverting virtually the whole damn thing except its beginning and end.

:) Thanks for the idea, but there's already a stack of things that could go horribly wrong with this design, not least of all a siege or megabeast attack while the dwarves are still putting up the legs. Accidentally messing up the implementation up a self-destruct mechanism could cost this kitty its ninth life.

On the other hand, I do like the baited claws idea...and yes, fitting everything into the kitty, brain or otherwise, is going to take some serious efficiency planning, and as you say, fractals will look good in the brain(and why not the internal organs, as well.)  :)

If you are concerned with a goblin siege or megabeast attack while in the process of building this monstrosity, then I'd say first thing you should do is protect the building site.  Wall off the building site.  Also it wouldn't hurt to initially use the legs as watchtowers, build fortifications into the walls and station some marksdwarves or catapults into them.

Also when you get to the mouth, put some spear traps where the teeth should be.  That would be awesome.

:) Or a bigger cat. This is going to be one huge pussy.

Obviously I can't start constructing Nightstalker on Day 1...sadly, Dwarves have got to eat and drink, so will need to balance out constructing and running the labor camp with the Big Project. Defence of the camp is also a consideration. Alternatively, I could find somewhere remote where only dwarves could find me, but that spoils the entire conclusion of human wagons rolling into the cat's mouth, so it's not really an option.

It's a mammoth job, so I don't want to spare too many dwarves for defence. I'll just have to ride that narrow line where I'm using all my dwarves for survival and construction, with a few dwarves I can draft in an emergency(like a woodcutter/axedwarf).

And your miners. This is going to take a LOT of stone, so consider 2 or maybe even 3 miners.

So would your cat look like this, roughly speaking? I think if you were to stop the urine floodgate like this, it would back up. I dunno though, I'm not good with water pressure and I don't do many big projects like this.

Hmm...I've never been a big fan of CCGs - I mean, I did and still do collect Pokemon cards, but I never got heavily into the battling and trading thing.

By definition that makes you a fan since you still buy them.

LMAO , pump that sumbitch up a mountain? I don't know why but that's the funniest thing i've heard in a long time. Makes me imagine a combination of an american construction contractor mixed with a dwarf.

Thoughts du jour...

"This is going to be one huge pussy." Could I quote you on that?

So, finding a cliff where a natural waterfall exists would be nice. A calm site would make setup easier. Rough terrain would make defense easier but construction tougher and less fashionable. Maybe I'll poke around in a seed or two and see if anything comes to mind.

You could either let the waste water just come out the back and not care what happens, or you could _build_ a channel above the ground via constructions that would lead to a pump at the end and push that excess water off of the map. It's possible it might flow off on its own, as well, depending on where a channel ends up and if you have less than flat terrain. Perhaps you pump it back into the river? Or, have the cat stand astride the river- or brook more likely. Well, when you find a site, I suggest building a mini-model just as proof of concept. Not fully grown or habitibale, but just enough to test water disposal theories and look for potential problems.
